It cracks me up how people complain about a 20" AR. I have carried them 20 miles with a rucksack and cleared buildings. If they are too heavy for you at the range, your rifle is the least of your issues.

Back Country Nomad I love my 20"...with the A1 stock, it's shockingly handy in vehicles and thick brush. I carried mine this weekend on state defense force maneuvers- a mile or so through some of the thickest brush I've seen in Missouri outside of secondary-growth stuff that was logged or mined. Weight is nowhere near a problem, and the balance is perfect!

I'm a younger shooter (about to turn 21 December) and I'm actually used to the weight of the older, heavier "battle rifles;" my first gun was a Norinco SKS at age 13, followed the next year by a Mosin Nagant 91/30. Then, with my own money I've since bought an AR10 and an HK91, both of which are 8.5lbs minimum without attachments. It's changed my perspective some, such as my surprise as to how light the M1 Garand (love that rifle) felt to me when I first held it when everyone claims how heavy it is. I'm currently looking for a good 'ole 20" AR15 to supplement my experience and my fun :) Have a good one y'all

+Reid Henrichs IMHO, the best thing about the 16" is that it's the shortest without NFA bullshit. Otherwise, for home defense, 16" is kind of long. 16" should be mid-length gas system (my preference). Less gas, less pressure. For home defense, a super short .300 BLK would be sweet, but a 12.5 5.56 would be good. I like the 16" for all around. For long range, I'd just get a .308, so no long barrel 5.56 for me. Awesome channel, by the way.

The way I was trained in 2004 to clear buildings indoors was to have an almost straight down alert position with the barrel (not flagging your own foot) and when pieing corners and such to take the stock out of your shoulder. The .223 or 5.56 in a 20" configuration doesn't kick so hard that you need that firm press with the stock to keep it under control. I too like the 20" better than the others, with a carry handle too. Iron Sights all the way.

@@brandondang7156 hold the pistol grip in your hand and let the stock sit on top of your elbow, doing this you can essentially use it like a folding stock, though the stock is still there of course. This can allow you to place the side of the rifle against a wall or corner and lean out with just your head and hand, exposing a minimal amount of your body to fire.

I'm a 20" AR guy. I enjoy the rifle length gas system the most and I found the 20" barrel delivers the best accuracy with heavy otm's at longer ranges. I enjoy my 10.5" AR pistol a lot and it does give me comfort knowing I can keep it as a truck gun should I ever find myself in that situation where a pistol won't cut it. Plus I cannot count the number of critters that don't like my 20" AR, especially when they get slapped hard with a 77 grain pill at a good distance away, lol.

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy, maybe your 20” barrels have been more accurate but it being longer is not the reason why. In fact it’s believed 20” barrels are LESS accurate due to more barrel vibration because of its length

+Cole Hart To each their own! We had tons of issues with our full length M16A4s in Iraq. The most common was the difficulty in using them while in mounted operations or in CQB. A simple fix would have been to issue collapsible stocks but that never happened! Reliability was average but you had to stay on top of the maintenance routine. Most of the issues we had were with older beat to shit M16A2s. Mostly due to parts wear and Marines fucking them up during training.

I think the carbine has gotten so popular many younger people don't even consider anything but a 14.5 or 16" barrel. When people try my 20" they are stunned at how nice it shoots. I am a woman & weight in the barrel is an issue so my carbine is my primary but, if you are into the AR, you must have a full length rifle too. They shoot so nice & yes, an extra 400 fps really does make a difference.

D Slag PSA has a 20" upper with the good FN barrel for $299. Of course after buying a BCG & charging handle you would be a little over $400 but not to much over. How do you like that 18"? I was hoping thgreatandini had some secret place that he was getting complete uppers in the $200-300 range! LOL. I have a number of 16" uppers (Del-ton, JSE and DPMS) that were around the $400 range and a RRA 18" varmint upper that I picked up 2nd hand for about $300 without the bcg. I have a lower with a PSA A2 stock I'd like to put a nice 20" upper on. I'd love to pick up the PSA upper but they are a$$holes and will not sell any AR parts to people who live in CT. It's totally legal to have a preban AR and there are lots of people still selling lowers but PSA will not even sell a part never mind an assembled upper to those of us stuck in this $hit state.

Remember that barrel profile is a big player in how well a rifle balances. A 20" pencil barrel feels better than many carbines, while increasing muzzle velocity and sigbt radius. Eugene Stoner's original 20" lightweight rifle has a lot going for it; don't forget this.

I built a 16 inch AR with a Mid-length gas system. It's a NICE gun. I did have some issues with short stroking, the gun ejected the spent round but would not pick up the next round. To fix it, I bought a chrome silicon buffer spring. It's a softer spring than the carbine spring I had in it and it fixed the short stroke. The gun has been 100% since. Being a mid-length, it is noticeably softer shooting too. At a gun shoot out at my parents ranch, a buddy had a full carbine length 16 inch and mine was softer shooting. One benefit to the chrome silicon buffer spring, the spring has a 650,000 plus round life expectancy and should outlive me and the AR. The standard carbine buffer spring should be replaced at around the 12,000 round point. I then built an 18 inch AR, and it also short stroked, using the mid-length gas system. I bought another chrome silicon spring and that fixed that too. I'm sold on them. They are a bit more expensive, although not ridiculous. Usually around $25.00 and the benefit of them greatly outweighs the initial purchase price. Love the AR's and am planning another shoot at the ranch for my buddies.

Way back in the old days I was a 11B primary, 64C secondary and when driving the 5 ton we kept the M16’s on the window locking nut. It was grate until you needed the rifle quickly. We always asked why couldn’t the barrels be shorter? Your right though the 20” barrel shot soft and was accurate at distance, I shot expert all the time I was in. Great video Reid!

i have an Ar-15 in every length you have displayed. But, i tend to gravitate to my 20 inch build. its just so smooth and pleasant to shoot and at distance it shines as it is 1-7 twist and handles those 70 grainers well. i will say my 16" shoots better groups most days at under 200 which most people have a misconception that longer barrel equals accuracy. most gun guys know that's not always true.

I built 2 AR's and one was a 16 and the other was an 18. Both actually have the mid-length gas systems. I haven't fired a 16 inch carbine at the same time as the 16 inch mid-length for comparison, but the 16 is a soft shooter. I had the same issue with both rifles, and since I built them both, I had to diagnose the issue and repair them myself. After firing both the first time for function, both short stroked. Both would eject the spent casing but didn't pick up the next round. The first one I built was the 16 inch, and I had bought all the parts as a carbine, then found the barrel was a mid-length gas system, so I ended up getting the mid-length gas tube and a mid-length front hand guard. Otherwise, the rest of the parts were the same as a carbine length was. A friend suggested trying a Chrome Silicon buffer spring to see if that fixes the problem. It did. I had a flawless shooter after that. I figured the longer gas system just didn't put enough spent gases down the gas tube to fully cycle the rifle, but the softer spring was able to accommodate for that. I'm sold on the spring. When I built the 18 inch, the exact same thing happened. It was still a mid-length gas system, but a 2 inches longer barrel. I originally figured it would function OK being an 18 inch, but again, it short stroked. I bought a 2nd Chrome Silicon buffer spring and it's now running perfect. One benefit of the buffer spring, it has a 650,000 to 750,000 round life expectancy. The standard buffer springs should be replaced at around the 12,000 round point, so they should outlive the rifles themselves. They are a little more expensive, around $25.00 each, but a great upgrade, plus they eliminate the spring sound when firing. Love both rifles, and ended up giving the 16 to my wife. She likes the gun and also said it was a soft shooting rifle. Mid-length is the way to go.

I run a midlength gas system on a 16" barrel, makes for better recoil follow up shot and reliability. the midlength gas length was designed to be used for the 16"-18" barrel. The carbine length was designed to be used on the 14.5" M4 for the cycling rate increase in full auto, but has a much more felt recoil. There's honestly no need to run a carbine length gas system on a 16" semiautomatic rifle because you will never get the cycle rate in semiautomatic you will with a fully automatic rifle, you might as well go with the longer gas system on a midlength for better recoil, and reliability. Manufacturers started using carbine length gas system on ARs because people started asking for it because "That's what the military uses" but in fact are putting themselves at a disadvantage with a semiautomatic rifle by increasing the recoil using the shorter gas system. a nice midlength gas system 16" barrel with a good comp make a huge difference in recoil and follow up shots. the only difference is a few grams of weight from the little bit longer gas tube and it's honestly negligible. A midlength gas system is ideal on a 16" rifle IMO. Maybe suggest it to Patriot Nurse, she might like it better.

the 10.5 inch barrel used a carbine gas tube. Just needed to drill out the gas port a slightly larger size and she runs just fine. Its a extremely short rifle and good enough to hit over 100 to 200 yards man size targets. I enjoy it as a home defense rifle due to the short length or as a good great car/truck gun.

My favorite AR -15 and AR-10 Barrel length is 18". My favorite AR is one I built around a LA Rue Tactical 18" Stealth Sniper Upper. with reasonable wind conditions I can land shots on a 60% IPSC target all day long out to 985 yards using handloaded 75 grain Hornady Match Bullets. Good video!

he's very incorrect about the caliber needing 2500 fps to fragment reliably. That's only true if you limit yourself to the crappy fmj the military uses. He's very rigid in his thinking. He also thinks there's a huge velocity/ energy difference between barrel lengths. That just isn't factual. The caliber only loses 25 fps per inch. He's imagining that's more than it really is. Good basic information. ;-) I like the different barrel lengths for the same basic reasons you do. The known rule to us old timers is that on average you gain, or lose 50 feet per second for each inch added or subtracted from your barrel. So your 20" barrel is going to have approximately 200 ft per second more velocity than your 16" barrel. This video deserve a thumbs up.

NWC Crane perfected the 18" version in the Mark 12. There is a lot to be had in 1/8 OR 1/7 18" barrel with a rifle length gas system. Combined with the MK 262 77 gn MHP you have sufficient energy at long range (600 yds) to be effective. Not so with the lighter ammo and 1/9 or even slower twist rates and stubby barrels. This guns gasses properly suppressed without much more than a flat mainspring, full weight bolt carrier assy and buffer. See Midwest Industries version too.

I did a quick Google search and found a blog where they compiled velocity data on various barrel lengths from 16 all the way up to 26" on 5.56 rounds from various manufacturers. Even with a 16" barrel, all of the velocities were well over the 2500 fps mark with more starting at 3,000-3,100 fps. They calculated that for each inch less in difference, there was only about a 25 fps loss. I know that in order for the 5.56 to remain at maximum lethality (ability to double over and tumble), it needs to be moving at a certain speed. If Reid is correct, then even with a shorter 16" barrel, you should still be well inside that lethality range.

I like Reidsville videos above many for, as stated below, for the calm, straightforward and easily comprehended presentation, the continuity of composition (he doesn't bounce around in subtopic babble or saying the same thing over and over) and he gives complete information on the topic or where to find continued information. It's a breath of fresh air in KZbin land. Between he and Sootch's vids, you don't need to search to far for what you need. my personal preference is either a 14.5" or 16" barrel with a mid length gas system (lowered recoil, smoother shooting, still more than reliable enough)for anything under 400 yards. To me 5.56 isnt much use at 800 yards like some like to think and most people will NEVER shoot a 5.56 that far to begin with. but I do agree, I like a longer barrel since most of my shooting is outside, at a range. the longer barrel let's me get my long arms out further on it, lower recoil for what that's worth, and in addition to higher velocity the muzzle is out significantly further than a 14.5" barrel which is great, it just doesnt quite feel like it's hammering my ear drums through the ear pro quite as hard.

One of my favorite channels. informative, no bs, Reid is a class act. The lighting did make this video a little less enjoyable however. I think that just turning the camera a different direction would have been better. Other than that fantastic as usual.

I`m a 20" barrel guy as well. I have a couple 16" colt carbines and a sabre defense with an 18in barrel but the 20`s are my choice. I just picked up a 20in fn15 but, it isnt quite as accurate as my colts. at 1.25 in at 100yds it`s still plenty precise for about anything you care to do

My Monday morning has just gotten 10x better. I like the 18" because you get the full rifle length, yet you cut off a sliver of weight over the 20". If I ever get a CQB 10.5", it'll be in .300 BLK

Raul, you must be around people who don't ask good questions. You probably think Glocks are as well with your 1911. The 300 blk is better than 5.56. And don't even talk about targets past 300 meters cause no one on this page can successfully hit targets at that range under pressure. Raul, I want the best caliber for a suppressor, which is what subsonic 300blk gives. Also, supersonic 125 grain 300blk is just as good as 7.62x39, but I have an AR platform that is better with regards to parts and ergonomics and AR magazines.

It's not your decision on how far someone engages a threat(s). All situations are different. Go talk to Ben Mookie, or James Yeager, hell, ask Reid. All of them want capabilities of shooting past 50 yards. Why? Because they have war experience unlike yourself. Go tell them to their face that they don't need a rifle to shoot past 50 yards. Who are you to say no one here can shoot past 300 meters? With that ignorance, you probably don't even own a gun. Discrediting other's defensive firearm of choice that's deadly and accurate past 50 yards doesn't make your pellet gun more deadly. You should shut your mouth and listen a tad more.

Raggarade, you're right, it's not my decision, it's the law's. I'm not giving a personal opinion. In most states someone is not considered a threat past 100 yards with some states having much shorter distances. If you study self-defense situations it's on average within 20 feet. These guys think they're still down range, and even down range they weren't snipers so this fixation about long distance is a waste of time when thinking logically. This video is about self defense. No one in a home wants the velocity of a 18-20+ inch barrel. That is not smart unless you live in Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch.

18-20" are more reliable due to the rifle length gas system, that's why they're recommended over carbine length gas systems. Also, it's not just for personal self defense. It could be a defense against hostile foreign forces. In which case longer shots can be just as important as short distance shots. Sorry for name calling, for some people it's needed to get the point across.

20" is the master race of AR's and people laugh at me but i rock a 20" upper with an HBAR with carry handle rear sight and a 4x scope on top of the carry handle as my do all, SHTF/HD rifle. it's stupid accurate and the velocity a 20" gives is worth lugging around the longer platform, people act like it's impossible to fight in close quarters with it but somehow people were getting it done very well with them for a long time

I like my 16" rifle gas dissy. Its not for every one though as there is a potential for it to be finicky and temperamental. Mine runs amazingly well, incredibly soft shooting, and has been incredibly reliable even when I abuse it, but many people find that they are a pain in the ass. 16" carbine is a tad over gassed, but runs reliably. My favorite shorter AR's have been 16" mid gas though. Reliable, softer shooting, and all around great. lol Every one's mileage may very though. The important thing is just having enough gas to reliably cycle every time you pull the trigger.

I love the 20 inch! I only have an 18 inch because i got it for a sweet price. Love the Barrett Rec 7 DI. IT Shoots M855 extremely well. I hand load but im not sure its worth messing with it.

I choose a 16" with a mid-length gas system. I live in the city and can't really envision needing to take more than a 250yrd shot even in a SHTF situation. More than 300yrds is really asking a lot for a .22 cal bullet. That being said, the 18 inchers are appealing. Maybe my next AR?

R Priest - your instincts are on the money. The 5.56x45 NATO cartridge can be lethal out to 500-600 meters or more, but it is a much more-reliable fight-stopper inside 300 meters, 0-300 meters being the "envelope" for an effective assault rifle. And the small, light projectiles -in particular 55-62-grain fodder - are really at their best inside 150 meters because the AR system relies so much on high MV for effectiveness. A 55-grain M193 leaves a 20-inch muzzle at 3240 fps or so - which is really moving - but because the projectile is so small and light, it dumps energy quickly as MV decreases and has poor retained momentum. Modern ammo designers and manufacturers have really done an outstanding job stretching out the 5.56 to ranges probably in excess of what most thought could be done, but there really are better choices for hitting hard at medium and long range. Eighteen is a pretty good barrel length, which is why a number of mil-pattern rifles and carbines have used it, such as the CETME/G3 family of automatic rifles.

I am impressed with the difference the mid-length gas system makes on my BCM 16" v the carbine length. I grew up on the M-16 in the army before going to the M4 style ARs at work. Mid gives a a smoother recoil impulse

I hear people complain that the 18" is too long for home defense, but in the same breath, they insist that a shotgun is a more viable option. Unless you have a tax stamp, that shotgun barrel is 18.5" minimum. Go with an 18" (1/8 twist preferably) and you'll be effective from 5 yards to 500 yards.

Kind of splitting hairs on this one. Like you said, if 18" or 20" is too long just get an adjustable stock. The point is to get something that is comfortable for you to use "effectively." I watched a video with a 3200 ft/sec, 5.56 round go through steel armor plate, whereas, the 7.62 x 54R round just put a rib breaking dent in the steel plate. One might knock you down and hurt like heck, but the other kills you. Bigger is not always better and longer/shorter fits that same category. The optimum word is "effective." The velocity of a 55 gr M193 on a 16" barrel is 3132 fps, the 20" barrel is 3259. So its 127 fps for that 4" difference, which makes it 63.5 fps

Are you handloading the M193? The fastest M193 I can find is one of three being Winchester, imi and Hornady Frontier. The best I'm getting for averages through my chronograph is around 3050-3090. I've noticed on like super hot days I can sometimes see rounds pushing 3110.

Luckily you can have a 16 and a 20 inch for about a hundred bucks. I personally love how smooth a 20" shoots. But a 16" is very comfy to carry. My next favorite would be 14.5 with a pinned/welded muzzle device. I'm just patiently waiting for a 10" barrel with a 6" muzzle brake.

Outside of getting a whole different rifle for each length, what are your thoughts about just getting different uppers for each situation? If you happen to have a sixteen inch carbine say, would stepping that up to the full length 20 be an issue, as long as the upper fits well will it not give you those long range advantages when nessicary?

I prefer a 20 inch barrel for maximum velocity but I fell in love with the rainier arms ruc mod 2 and it only comes in 16 or 18 inch so I ended up getting the 18 inch version. I used the M-16 A4 in the Marine Corps and I didn't find it to be too long at all.

The way I think about is that the US Military used to use the M1 Garand (No1 favorite rifle ever) that weighs 9.5 lbs and has a 24" barrel and did fine with it. So the 20" AR 15 is not that bad for cqb. It is my favorite length and I have never shot any other configuration besides it.

I think for what the AR-15 is and for what the average citizen is going to use it for a 16" barrel and mid length gas system is going to be optimal. It's the best compromise between the 20" and 14.5" barrels and the mid length gas system cycles smoother compared to the carbine. A 16" barrel is going to give you good accuracy and isn't so long that you have issues in tight spaces such as inside a building. 18" and 20" barrels are nice but let's face it were talking about a .22 caliber bullet and the AR-15 was never meant to be a "sniper rifle". The AR-10 was developed to fill the DMR/sniper role and is superior to the 5.56 at distance.

I have a AR pistol with a 7 inch barrel.I use a pigtail gas tube and it's a very reliable gun. Never had any kind of failure. Also have a 24 Inch that has at least one jam every time I use it.

I've been reloading for more than 30 yrs. I load for for .223,22-250, 22-250AI, 243, 6.5x47L, 270W, 7mm Mag, 30 carbine, 308, 30,06, 300 Weatherby, 380, 38spl, 357mag, 357sig, 40S&W, as well as blk powder.... I don't remember any of these that didn't benefit in velocity by the use of a longer barrel and in most cases a slower burning powder as long as all the powder is consumed before the end of the barrel is reached by the fired bullet. My chronograph has born this out countless times, as do formulas and programs I use. The 223 doesn't appear to be any different. I own 16, 20 and 24" AR's, as long as bullet weight and twist weight along with all the other factors are taken into account.
