Who can afford the guns, the holsters/belts/slings, the ammo, a concealed carry license, the required training course (which usually costs extra and *is* required for the CCL/CCW) and *then* afford the cost of travel *plus* the tactical courses on top of it all!?

@@3nertia Honestly there are a lot of hidden fees. If all you can afford right now is a hi point or a Taurus g2c and a few boxes of ammo it’s better than nothing. Put a box or two through the gun to make sure it functions properly and leave it by your bedside or whatever. Once you get a bit more money get a quality holster, then your ccw, then training. You don’t have to do it all at once. You also don’t have to take thousands of dollars worth of training to be competent with your firearm. Obviously if you can afford it, train.

@@3nertia Ooof Illinois, I’m sorry lol. I completely understand though, money is definitely tight for a lot of people at the moment. This inflation is genuinely absurd. My only point was you don’t have to spend thousands on all the newest latest greatest gizmos, and then a few more grand on training. I know Illinois is pretty ridiculous when it comes to a lot of things but idk all the rules and stipulations around firearms there. Once you get back up on your feet a little bit a lot of the times you can even find good deals at pawn shops. Idk about where you’re at but I always see police trade ins or even used Taurus handguns for reasonable price. I wish you the best, and hopefully things start to look up for you.

Appreciate the video. Just want to add a few thoughts. I've studied ballistics, ammo, guns, night vision, thermal, white lights, suppressors, all levels of body armor etc for many years. I own all of the above and then some. Here are my thoughts on AR ammo for homes defense: 1. What's the environment inside and outside? Don't discount having to shoot through a wall or windshield. Especially a wall. Most people think intruder knocks door in and you get an open shot at said intruder. That may or may not happen so be ready. If you trap intruder(s) in residence and they are armed, it's likely a gun fight will ensue. If so what kind of barriers are you dealing with? The situation could end up outside. What happens when intruder decides to use 2 ton vehicle to run you over? 2. Barrel length. I think this is one of the most over looked aspects of this topic. Most people would use a 16 inch carbine which is great, but what if one prefers a 10.5 inch which imho is preferred? The round choice can be dramatically different between these two. The threshold for expansion and / or fragmentation can and will be a consideration. The heavier otm rounds may not work in your 10.5 inch barrel the way you might think. 3. Other gear on gun. Definitely a really good and dependable white light. I always make sure it's in the right location on the gun and that I practice using it. I wouldn't recommend waiting until the door comes down to make a trial run. 4. My recommendations for each barrel. Note there are many lenghts, but these two are most common. I've added a range that would work for others obviously 10.5-12 inch * Black Hills 50 gr TSX. Barrier blind. Excellent penetration. Really fast out of short barrels allowing for maximum tissue damage and expansion. * Hornady's 5.56mm barrier blind rounds between 53gr - 62gr. Note 5.56 not .223. It can be tricky to find but if you look you can. * Federal FBIT3 62gr, Speer Gold Dot 55-64gr, winchester 5.56mm bonded 14.5-18 inch barrels * all of the above work just as good or better in these barrels. More velocity equals more tissue damage. * Hornady 5.56mm TAP T2. Could be hard to find, but many consider this the best home defense ammo ever made. Barrier penetration isn't the best, but if you can find it get it. * 5.56mm copper, bonded or gilded metal rounds. The list is long but stick with 5.56mm. Go to Hornady's Law Enforcement website. Look at the list. Find the ammo online.

I can hardly afford to practice with the gold dots either, but I've put at least 1k of the 62+64 grain gold dots down range. One thing I'd like to add is the benefit of practicing with your chosen defense ammo. Not just the obvious reasons, but the confidence it brings. I know exactly what to expect with gold dots from my guns. It makes me a lot more confident. Confidence in a fight can be the difference between winning and losing.

Note that while the rounds themselves are indeed some of the most expensive on the market, many shooters report that that they shoot very similarly out of their rifles as XM193 practice ammo -- or near enough for 90% of your average range training. You still probably want to run enough TSX through your rifle to confirm your POI/POA and reliability, but being able to use M193 for a lot of your training without adjusting your optics sounds like a great bargain to me.

I just very recently bought 9 boxes of this exact ammo you have (Hornady 75 gr. BTHP), and I'm glad to know I accidentally chose the right one. In the video, he mentions 77 gr. on one of the rounds, but I guess 75 gr. is just as good? Anyhow, as soon as my eight, 40 round Magpul PMags come in the mail, I will load them all up with this ammo, and be ready for the bad guys.

Worth mentioning is rifling twist for the heavier rounds since they’re longer bullets they like tighter twists like 1:8 or 1:7. Good video

@@sinqros yea 1/9 is pretty standard and stabilizes a wide range of light-ish to standard weight. 1/9 is reliable up to 69gr, although some manufacturers will claim 75 grain. 1/7 is standard mil spec.

Good video. Good info. I've read a lot of articles about the AR platform used in home defense. A lot of it has to do with how bullets perform when it hits a fleshy target. The right bullets have a tendency to explode on impact causing grievous injury, expending most of its energy. I'm reserving my AR gun for SHTF scenarios-- when things go to hell in a hand basket and can use it for every situation. Otherwise it's just me and the shotgun and a Glock 26.

Hey, thanks Reid. I'm kind of new to the AR-15 world (2 1/2 years experience, and only for targets and home defense). I guess I'm an 'advanced beginner'. I know what you mean about the gas system to barrel length. Mid length has enough advantages and no real disadvantages on its own to make it a worthwhile consideration. I will say I've never fired an AR with an A1 stock, but I feel like it might shoulder comfortably despite my long arms. Need to build one someday.

Very good advice, even 4+ years after it was published. I’d offer one comment, which was not included in the video (I didn’t read though the nearly a thousand earlier comments to ascertain if others have posted a similar concern). The MK 262, 77 gain, 5.56x45 OTM is a superb choice, BUT barrels with slower twist rates may not stabilize this longer/heavier projectile. For example, the early 12:1 twist rate M-16 barrels might not be effective, which probably means: (1) reasonable defensive accuracy at quite short ranges, but perhaps not beyond those rather short ranges and (2) “keyholing” even at relative short ranges, which can eliminate the designed advantages of some rounds (i.e., a soft point round won’t expand well/at all if the projectile’s side - not its front - enters the target).

To all wondering, I now use wolf soft point ammo. DON'T use hollow point, too much penetration. After watching many ballistics tests, soft point will only penetrate about 12" into ballistics gel, where fmj and hp will go all the way through. It'll still go through drywall, so aware of your target and what's beyond it. It probably won't leave your house, but it might go through a couple rooms. Fire from the kneeling position at an upward angle to minimize risk.

A handgun is a better option for some of us despite possible over penetration.

Kudos for mentioning the soft points may have cycling problems in some rifles. I had some Winchester ammo and the AR cycling caused the projectiles to get jammed back inside the case. I believe the ammo was also defective but just haven't bought any more.

The Barnes bullets are solid copper and known for holding there weight and penetration, and am almost sure it would over penetrate. Unlike a lead or other type of bullet the copper tends to hold together and push through anything. I have experienced this in person hunting. A soft point 223 may or may not exit on deer size game but I've never seen the TSX bullet not exit. Both will work but in doors I would not choose that round.

Not a myth so much as irrelevant. There are a few (older) tests performed in a relatively scientific way that show some benefit accuracy wise from a 'break in' period. The benefit is very small and only really relevant to folks who are shooting benchrest or similar. The effects on accuracy pale in comparison to those gained from a good barrel, proper handload development, and scores of other factors. If you aren't trying to put multiple bullets through the same load at long range from a sled type rest, It isn't something you should worry about. If you are concerned with this type of accuracy, you can look into firelaping (shooting abrasive impregnated lead bullets to smooth the imperfections in a barrel), which serves the same purpose to an arguably greater degree.

Sir: May I ask if these rounds are good for 16" barrels? If yes, what limitations might I expect (not good for long range, etc.) Quick run down on video: Mr. Henrichs' recommends: Get a good white light for your gun, you MUST identify your target. Get a good gun that shoots straight and learn how to use it. What ever ammo you choose, make SURE it cycles reliably in your gun. Take it to the range and shoot, shoot, shoot until you are absolutely sure it works in your gun (and you know how to shoot well) BEFORE you rely on it for self-defense. Taking a good defense class is highly recommended. 1) XM193 55 grain, fragments, tumbles does what it's supposed to do. 2) Softpoints. Several manufacturers produces such bullets, from 62 grains and up. Doesn't cycle well in SOME guns, not so accurate at long distances, but this video is about home defense, not 200 yard shots. 3) Open Tip Match (OTM) which are made by several manufacturers. Typically 75 grains and up. Note that the heavier bullets tend to resist wind deflection at greater distances, but this vid is about home defense, not 200 yard shots. Note: this ammo can get a little expensive. 4) Finally, Polymer Tips, made by several manufacturers, typically 60 grains and up. Mr. Henrichs, I hope you don't mind my "crib notes" feel free to change anything I might have posted inaccurately. To all: Be blessed.

First, M855 is no better against armor than other 5.56 ammo. In fact M193 will penetrate level 3 AR500 steel armor but M855 will not. Yes I've seen that myself. Velocity is what defeats armor, not tiny steel tips. Second, M855 is designed to work from a 20" barrel. From a carbine barrel, unless you are lucky enough to hit bone, it ice picks. It's OK if you don't believe me, but the information is out there so do your research before you decide what ammunition to bet your life on.

I have seen no proof or evidence that M193 or M855 will pierce AR500's Level III steel armor (which is rated to stop 7.62x51mm M80). I've heard complaints that they will dent and ding up your armor, but I've never heard a report of somebody shooting through their AR500 armor with one round from a M193 or M855. Please provide proof if you choose to stand by your statement. Armor wouldn't be very effective if the most common rounds it is meant to stop instead penetrate it. Rule of thumb, armor rated to stop specific rounds isn't defeated by those rounds.

Cole Dedhand Wow, that was hostile and rude. You did say "AR500" which is arguably the most popular brand of personal armor. Even if not AR500 brand, AR500 is a specific grade of steel that at SAPI plate thicknesses is not likely to yield to 5.56. Please provide an example (brand, product, or video evidence) so that we can either read the specs of that armor or observe a 5.56 rated armor plate on video fail to protect against some of the most common 5.56 rounds. And yes, if you say fraudulent things (or make outlandish claims) and insist that they are correct, you should provide evidence to support your statement. If you fail to do so, it can be assumed that it is because your statement is incorrect.

Paul Harrell just released a home defense penetration video. The 193 may fragment and/or keyhole but it still went through two interior walls and an outer wall. It is not a good round for multioccupancy buildings or in neighborhoods with a lot of modern construction. The 30 caliber carbine was worse but you expect that at home defense ranges because of greater momentum of the heavier bullet
