Yeah, the T Rex version seems more slithery, nasty (dare I say sexy?). Robert Palmer doesn't seem to be really singing the lyrics, just using them as a vehicle for his usual emoting. Great to see this. I had considered sending a request to compare an original and cover version of the same song by two different artists. Watch for a future letter unless with such a request. What I respect about the Power Station is that they did the cover version as a new interpretation of the song, and not trying to do a note-for-note cover version like a garage band. Whichever version of this song you like best is a good choice. I am partial to the original, but the Power Station version is also good. Ever notice how each decade from the 50's through the 70's had a dominant instrument? The 50's the saxophone, the 60's the electronic organ. The 70's squalling lead guitar or guitars. Wish overall young people would rediscover music. Few good groups but far apart. Music today is like cars. No originality. Can't hardly tell one from the other.

Nice changeup from the standard reviews! You should make this a semi-regular occurrence. For the record, I'll qualify myself as having been a kid when the T.Rex version debuted and as cool as is their version, Power Station infused more power (no pun intended) and better production, not to mention superior musicianship into their rendition (that entire album really is underrated and fantastic). T Rex for sure. But then, I would say that...I'm an old fossil. You should check another one of theirs "Children Of The Revolution". p.s. love your work kids.p.p.s. Everywhere else in the world it was called "Get It On'. It was called "Bang A Gong" in the US because there was already a song with that name.

Both are good. Heard the original when I was a kid and then the remake when I was a teenager. Keep it up

Having lived through both decades - 70's as a kid, 80's as a teen - the 2 decades were like 2 different worlds. In the 70's, it was a bit more laid back with the music. Music was much more raw and spontaneous. In the 80's, everything went BIG: the hair, the loud colored clothes, the movies/TV, and the music. Everything was hyper-produced with the digital age that the 80's ushered in. Things backed off a bit from the hyper-focused digital stuff in the 90's with the arrival of 'grunge'.

Check out a video of the T Rex version. The keyboard player is a young Elton John before he changed his name.

OK guys, I haven't even watched your video and I gotta say - good one! I had the T-Rex version on vinyl and later the Power Station version, and I can say that I see them almost as completely different songs. This is the mark of a great song, that it can become a whole new experience with every iteration. Now a fun fact: T Rex was originally an "experimental" psychedelic act in the late 60's... and were truly terrible ("Light all the fires it's the king of the rumbling spires..."). It was only in the 70s that they transitioned into a more mainstream rock band, but was cut short by Marc Bolan's car accident. A great loss. And definitely worth seeking out some of his other great songs from those 70's albums. And now, having watched half, I've got a tidbit: You'll notice at the very end, at the fadeout, he sings "Meanwhile, I was still thinkin'." This is taken from an old blues song. This is worth pointing out, as most rock, up until the 80's, was informed by the blues, and in many cases openly ripped off lyrics and chord progressions and licks. Indeed Led Zeppelin were sued over this very thing; certainly the first Zeppelin album is loaded with almost note for note transcriptions of classic blues songs. This is all by way of giving context to a lot of the rock you'll listen to from the 60s and 70s. I agree the at the Power Station version is rather more lively than the original, benefiting from reinterpretation by the amalgamation of musicians of the New Romantic period, and much better production quality. And I'll just add, lastly, that this is a great first song when learning the guitar, as it has only three or four very easy chords, and is mostly all about the rhythm, which is a lot of fun.

Always enjoy your reactions! If you stick with this theme, I would suggest “Whiskey in a Jar” by Thin Lizzy and Metallica.

The 80’s version sounds better. I didn’t even notice the cover art until Claire mentioned it. I thought it was a weird abstract 80’s art lol
