I absolutely love you! Every time I have an issue I literally come here to your channel to teach my how to replace parts in my bmw 328xi. I’m a woman that loves cats and will absolutely work on my own car but off course idk how to do it and you’ve never failed me. So far you’ve taught me how to replace my coolant tank and how to bleed the system and all, you taught ne how to do my oil changes, how to change a tire, how to replace my break wear sensor. I now just learned how to change my MAP sensor. Hence while I’m heat because with my knowledge I’ve learned from you guys so far is that you must disconnect the battery first before you can change that sensor. Not only will it not damage any parts or your car but it allows the car to reset the computer to program the MAP sensor. I wasn’t sure which way to disconnect the battery and now I know! Thank you so much for ask your EXTREMELY helpful videos. You have saved me so much money! What he is saying is VERY important. I replaced the battery in my 2010 BMW 328i years ago and didn’t disconnect the NEGATIVE post first a damaged the air bag module. Fortunately it was covered under a recall and was replaced for free but if it was not recalled it would have cost me $1200.00.

This is also the best practice on other vehicle models. It helps prevent any potential short circuit from positive cable touching the car body.

For all cars is same first - and then + and reverse. If you do in wrong way system is reset,and also you can get electrical short circuit on your car system

I have short circuit every time I connect battery charger it blow fuses on my charger. It’s 2006 bmwE60 525i I have FC 2DED in the DME and A559 and A554 in the instrument cluster current status The car been hit from the rear bumper lately and don’t know if this had to do with it, any suggestions where to start greatly appreciated

I don't have a lot of experience working on cars, just enough to do some basic maintenance and I wanted to remove (temporarily) my front passenger seat on my E87, so the battery must be disconnected (I watched your other videos), however, on my E90 I had to re-code the battery *after replacement (!). If I disconnect both (-) and (+) ends as advised, would it also require coding after reinstallation? I do own INPA and the necessary stuff but rather stay away if possible. :) Kind regards.

You should be alright. Your car will recognize that they battery is the same voltage as your one it disconnected.

The only reason you need to code a *new* battery, or really the only two reasons are: 1.) Because the computer establishes a charging profile for your battery that changes over time to adapt to the decreasing battery lifespan and capacity 2.) In the event that your new battery is a different size/capacity (in terms of amp-hours worth of charge it holds), and/or the new battery is AGM when the old one is a flooded lead-acid style battery (or vice-versa--if you're replacing an AGM with a flooded battery), then it tells the computer the correct battery type and capacity which is also important for ensuring the correct charging profile is used. Without registering and coding in a new battery, your car might under-charge or over-charge your battery and it's lifespan can be reduced as a result. So taking out your battery and reinstalling it, even if you charge it back to a full charge before reinstalling, is totally harmless and doesn't require any registering or coding because the car is already set up to charge that battery.

I see that’s a Walmart agm ever max battery? What did you code it at? 90 ah? My oem agm 850 cca 92 ah battery is coded at 80 ah… and it’s was replaced by bmw… weird.. got 7 years on it going to buy the Walmart agm battery tomo just need to figure out what AH it is

What about the battery post in the engine compartment (positive). Do anything with that or leave that connected?

you never disconnect that. and once your battery's ground has been disconnected, that thing is nothing more than a piece of metal with (hopefully) a red plastic cap on it. It's just a post connected to the battery by a long wire to be used for jump starting/charging so you don't have to screw with the battery and wiring in the trunk, which would introduce a lot of additional opportunities for damaging something.

Nevermind. It just has a row of fusible links in it. I cleared the rust out of it, polished the terminals, and bought new nylock nuts for the main terminals because the originals were rusted down to dust. Testing with a multi-meter shows all the fuses good and the rest is just a simple bus bar that connects all the major systems in the car to that single cable on the positive battery terminal.

BMWs are baby’s when it comes to some things. You have to have the car programmed for the new battery so it recognizes that the battery is new.
