Although I know this is just supposed to be for the laughs and whatnot but FYI for people watching the video, the more the helmet gets crushed, the safer it probably is. It's actually because the helmet absorbs the chock rather than your skull. The same logic applies to cars these days where they are very easy to get completely crushed in an accident whereas back in the day the frames of cars were much more solid but were also less safe. Ride safe!

That works in cars because the internal cage where the passengers are located stays intact while the outside absorbs the impact. That clearly isn't the case here.

Blue Waffle Yes. If it’s too hard, the pressure/momentum would just impact the head more. If the helmet takes all the pressure and breaks, the amount of impact on the head is reduced.

The helmet that held up the best on these tests was the hardest one, if you fall off your bike and hit your head, you want a softer impact, so don't go buying the hardest helmet.

Not true, you want a hard and brittle helmet that will break upon impact. Breaking into many pieces causes momentum to be transferred thus decreasing the impulse on your head giving you a smaller chance of an injury to the head.

@@cooperthurman But is not rare, it's rather usual actually, for the head to receive multiple impacts on an accident. You don't want the helmet to break in pieces at the first hit. Also, what if you drop it?. Deformation being better than fragmentation still holds up.

In the world of cycling helmets, $80 is borderline low-tier (though Giro does make very good helmets). A solid middle-of-the-road helmet would be about $150, and the really high-end helmets like Kask and Oakley that pros use can be $200-300, or even more in some cases. And there are notable differences in build quality between them. Not to mention time trial helmets, which can be easily $500+.

Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't it be the purpose of helmet to fall apart during impact so it absorbs some of the energy? Like when someone fails to break a plank, it hits back.

I like this. I would have liked to see a comfort test though. Perhaps putting them on a clay head, and seeing which one leaves the most/deepest impressions on the surface.
