Thanks for your endorsement of the Bontrager rear light. My local bike tech swears by that unit. So, your opinion pushed me over the top...I'm buying it! (Sorry that you don't get a commission.) He says that he has used it for more than three years (riding virtually every day) and that the battery seems as good as the day that he bought it.

The problem with 90% of cyclists, is they they insist on wearing black clothing all over, especially when it is dark. Black is KOOL but not very visible in the dark or when the sun is low and shining into your eyes. Cyclists should wear bright fluorescent jerseys and socks (they do exist). The front and rear flashing lights is a GREAT safety feature. Keep up the good work.

I never use the flashing modes! I mean, you are way more visible and safer with a constant beam. Make sure to angle the mounts slightly to the ground as to not blind other road users and there you go! I also used good quality reflecting tape on my Black/Charcoal Giant Roam3 Ebike and it blends in quite well and you can use it anywhere on the frame. done well, this can provide 360 degrees of reflection!

I think flashing modes are popular because they tend to offer twice the battery life over the constant low power mode.

Im a daily commuter and I use a cygolite metro 550 on the front. Its rechargeable, very bright and has a daytime strobe that will make you obvious to oncoming traffic even in sunlight. On the back is a cygolite hotshot 50, also rechargeable and crazy bright and also exceptionally visible during the day. And at night it's simply impossible to miss. I had a fellow cyclists pull up beside me at a stoplight one night and say "holy shit dude, if someone hits you from behind it's on purpose!"..enough said...

Flashing lights of bikers are so much more difficult to localize when you are driving a car! Causing much irritation and not safety. Use a steady light mode with healthy batteries and you'll be immensely visible and not being toxic on the road.

Bicycler here... can you add more detail to why you see blinky lights as bad versus steady lights? I like to be informed of other lines of thought. Thank you. (My view - when I drive, I like to "know" the blinky will be an under-powered vehicle)

The lights should never be pointed high enough to be annoying at night. (*some people live to be annoyed and gripe, f them, they can't be pleased) Cars with the high beams left on as the go by are much brighter, much more of a danger when its a lifted truck/suv, and far worse than any bike light. F U to all the motorists bitching in these comments. Semi-lost drivers and Lyft/Uber drivers making turns at the last minute are far more dangerous than a bike with a blinking light. Bad turns without signals occur thousands of times a night.... if anyone wants to make things safer, start there with the motorists. If you see the bike - it worked. I have been hit by a car when I had one steady beam, it just wasn't enough to make the driver notice me as they were leaving the parking lot. I'll never feel bad for a blinking light at a reasonable angle. Blinking gets you noticed, and staying on your bike. Yes, riding home with a steady 1000 lumens might have worked, but the batteries don't last long enough at that output.

Use multiple multi watt output power Class IV blinding and burning LASER's instead in addition to a powerful barely portable searchlight for the front light like a 100 watt Xenon Searchlight 8000 lumens. You can use a multi watt Laser light show for the rear blinkers You will need some extra batteries though

+Two Six: No, "Niterider" is a different brand totally also ridiculously expensive where you can go for a powerful "Strada" for front and also another powerful rear light "LeZyne" I think it's not as expensive as the first or the 2nd and last but not least, the American superstar, "Thrunite V6" is amazing for the front light and also much cheaper. Hope that helps bud.

The number one reason I don't like flash modes is because, and maybe it's just the area I live, birds HATE IT! I couldn't figure out why I always heard the sound of rain as I rode through the parking lot at night to get to work. Until one night when they finally got me. The flashing would disturb the birds and the entire flock would chase me, dive bombing and shitting all over the place. Every night

Why not pay a fraction of the price by mounting a nifty 18650 flashlight ($5+) on the handlebar of your bike with a mount ($4-$5) to match (or even surpass, depending on the quality of the mounted flashlight) the performance of $300+ bicycle lights? It may or may not be ideal for mtbs but for my roadie it works like a charm.

Chloe Hart HA! When I was 15 I bought a gas powered scooter from ebay. Literally a kick scooter with a seat and an engine. I went to Walmart and bought a "1,000,000 lumen" hand held spotlight - one of those ones people use to spot deer. Duct taped it to the handlebars and it served me well for two years. And only cost $50

The most important feature of a quality bike light should be a single switch / button to switch it on and off. 2 lights on the front and 2 on the back make quickly popping in and back out of a shop annoying as fuck when you've got to cycle through 7 different modes for each one. The mode functions should handled by a separate slider / rotary dial. Anyone know a decent quality light with this feature?

does the mounting on your seat stay come with the light or, how to buy it? I commute. mounting on my seat post is not practical because I typically have a pannier on a rack which would block the light. so it must be mounted on the seat stay. thanks.

NoodlesTBograt says: "This is a joke right, £220 for a torch.." == I share the same sentiment. For me, $60,- max. min. 250 lumens, 2 hour run time. which is not that hard to find, and it'll be even easier to find in the near future since the price of LED becoming cheaper and cheaper. Latest one I bough was $20.- Cateye Volt200, most compact on the market, it fits in any pocket. I carry it anywhere, anytime just in case I can't beat the sunset.

Dont buy a moon that is for sure. Comet lasted two weeks. Replacenment another 2 months. Now my front light, also a moon (300), is stuck on highest setting and wont dim the bastard until the low battery light comes on. Only then can i lower settings at wich point its pointless as the battery is nearly dead. So no i have a front light that i can only use for an hour at the most, if that. Stay away from this crap. There are far better lights out and there. I am not a shill hence i did not name any other lights but there is plenty of choice.

I HAATE when people use flashing lights, its so god damn annoying, you cant see anything when someone comes towards you with this kind of light. the eyes cant get used to the always changing brightness. you dont need to the center of attention of the whole street, you just need people to know that you are there.

Many people don't see a difference when compared to a normal light. That is probably even the majority. For me personal they can be fucking annoying. When too bright, too high angled and too fast flashing. But the real problem is some people are more sensitive to strobes than other to the point where they get headaches or seizures. Sounds exaggerated? Don't believe me, ask you local Doc about seizures from strobe light. That is also the reason they are not allowed in some countries.

I also hate the flashing lights as a cyclist. In a car i would not care that much because the headlights of the car would balance the brightness anyway but as a cyclist on a dark path its supper annoying to have someone with a super bright flashing light coming towards you. Its impossible to see anything. Especially in a city with small cycle ways its horrible
