Take a look at ecospeed, it’s a hard coating mostly used on cargo ships and it’s very strong because they use it on ships sailing in the ice and cargo ships use it because you can brush it of and it stays good for more then 20 years.

I have a 47’ powerboat on the Texas gulf coast. In the summer, the water temperature is well north of 80F. I get the boat painted every three years but the paint has always looked like it could last one more year. Pettit Trinidad hard paint. I also have a diver clean the bottom every three months but he never has to deal with shells on the hull. Just general slime which he easily removes. I do get barnacles on the running gear and trim tabs which he scrapes off but the hull is always smooth.

Hi, the silicone antifouling is very soft and prone to mechanical damages but if you take care about that layer in good condition , you should to use that much longer than 2 years. My colleague from our yacht club in Gdansk used silicone about fourth seasons last time and still with success.

I know the SV Delos crew invested in some ultrasonic system that apparently worked quite well. That said on a tri it would probably not make sense due to triple cost. Maybe something just to check out...

I sanded my aluminium power boat to bare aluminium and applied the Hempel silic 1 system, it’s fantastic, it self cleans so no lift out and water blasting every 6 weeks. After 5 months there are a few spots where the yellow tie coat appears. The sterndrive and stainless tabs still need scraping but this I can do in the water.

Good episode hope you get it sorted out on the bottom coat for your boat! I think each area of the seas are different as well and have different organisms in them that attack the paints/coating differently. so might want to see what would work in the area you are most likely to be in??

Bartek, You never be free of cleaning your boat below the water line. Choosing wisely its not an easy task. From my long experience on Caribbean waters - copper is overrated. Please contact Brian on Sailing Delos he has some super results with some unknown anti - fouling miracle paint. Don't rush, you have 3 hulls to think about. Lots of Love. Capt. Jack.
@CraigOverend2 жыл бұрын
Copper coat appears to need to be stirred continuously, even in the roller tray, so that you keep the copper particles suspended in the resin that you then apply in many thin coats so the copper can't fall out of suspension while drying on the hull.

Thank you. I am glad you're saying this. That seems to be the consensus that the performance of copper coat is radically dependent on carefull and precise application. Cheers. Bartek

There are so many factors whether an antifouling works or not that only people sailing and mooring close to your boat could have a somehow objective suggestion. Even in the same marina different spots have different growth. Since you said hauling the boat out is a major concern I would say go with copper coat. Still you will get some marine growth but it will be way easier to scrape it off. And it will last at least 5 years. One more concern though with copper coat is electrolysis since boat becomes metal while it was electrically designed as a plastic boat.
@sailoceans2 жыл бұрын
Good point about electrolysis. Thanks 😊

i don't know anything about bottom paint, but I was a crewchief on a 1902 mph jet fighter. Don't fly much over that red line, because the trailing edge would viberate away. When I leaned against the plane paint would get on my clothes like chalk. This was so when you flew through a nuclear cloud the radio active dust could be washed away. I guess this is like bottom paint. Sailing Lucky Fish; this captian said slime hides the fact the toxic paint is on the boat, so if you keep the slime off the crustatians stay away. You being a 767 pilot know about hydraulics, and pnuematics. A used pressure washer will work good under water just feed salt water to the pump, and walk around, and under your boat, and keep the slime washed away. Wash the machine with fresh water later.

hi... my input..i think 5 years is a stretch for any product with so many variables.. i would plan a lift for 2 .3 year mark.. work out where these types of lifts can take place and sail there.. new zealand will have multi hull cranes. and dont forget to factor in that if you hit something you will want to lift it out anyway.. potentially... if you can go 5 years .. more power to you... im interested in what you find out.

I think we gonna steer the coppercoat way as this is proven to be effective for 5+ years and we have someone here in poland who is very well experienced with the technology of application. Cheers. Bartek

@@sailoceans i hate to think how much coppercoat is for your tri mate. My old 30ft cat i was quoted just under 1 thousand but been put off by reading and viewing a few people's stories. Expecially @sailing Britican's story (worth a watch). I'm just going to seal with epoxy primer then go hard anti-foul i think. I look forward to seeing what options you go for. Cheers, Spence
@tom-erikjohansen4562 жыл бұрын
Ive used copper coat on my 50f cat. I can tell you that the application is absolutt the problem. You need the copper to oxidise into a green color. And I can clearly see where it’s working and not. It seems like it’s not working 100 % until a few years inn

Copper Coat does release toxins into the water, in fact my theory is this is why some people have no success with it. I didn't, it was the next best thing to no antifouling. But my boat was in a large marina and I believe the copper in the water made the organisms develop a resistance to it and so it didn't work for me. As far as the application, I can't vouch for it as I didn't apply it however I did scrape it back to shinny copper and the growth grew back straight away so I removed it. Silicone coatings I think will suit your boat and mine. Seacoast V10X is a hard spray on slick or foul release coating that will last for 10+ years, you won't need to scrape, just wipe and if you move the boat at 8+kn or more once a fortnight it will self clean. I haven't applied it on my boat yet but I will. I have done a lot of research and I am happy that it will work somewhere near the claims. E.g. one owner said at 6kn and long term growth he could see a trail of growth left behind the boat. He stopped to clean it and found the front half clean and the back half patchy. He wiped it clean with a sponge. I suspect 8kn might not have cleaned it fully but on a long run.... Maybe ? and maybe it would at 12kn or if there was only 2 weeks growth? P.S. it is hard enough that you can let the boat dry out occasionally without harm. Because it is hard it can be sanded back if you want it off. I plan to do two colours of undercoat so if I need it off I just sand back to the 1st applied colour, then I know it's all off.
