If you’ve been here for a while, you might know that I ApplaudMic the PodMic. For about $100 I think it’s an awesome value for anyone who wants to start podcasting or streaming. But Audio Technica is on the road to defeat Rode with the AT2040.

In the past, I probably would have preferred the PodMic. With many years of mic testing myself, I easily prefer the sound of AT2040 for this application. The PodMic just sounds thin IMO. The AT2040 just sounds great out of the box. Great video!

Gotta say it was nice to open KZbin this morning and see a Monday upload from you. Is it Christmas Day? Even better is that this is a review I’ve been looking forward to. I liked the sound of the podmic just a bit more. Wish it had the gain of the AT2040 but when I get my CT1, that won’t be an issue. Looking forward to seeing the Lewitt in one of these videos now. Big thing I noticed, the AT isolated your voice better, not picking up reflections off the wall. This is one issue I have with my podmic, in my own space, it picks up those room reflections.
@tombuck

I didn't notice until rewatching the video that the AT is labeled as a "hypercardiod" mic, so it makes sense that it would be more directional and a bit better at rejecting other sounds.

Hey Tom great video as always! I’ve heard great things about the Klark Teknik CT-1(which is similar in design to Fethead/Triton) but Klark Teknik also makes a CM-1 and CM-2 which is exact in its design style to the Cloudlifter CL-1 and CL-2. @tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference is that this is a "hypercardioid" dynamic mic, and the 2020 is a condenser mic. So basically this one is a bit better at isolating noise, but might need a signal booster whereas the 2020 may be prone to picking up unwanted environmental sound but will have more than enough volume.

AT2040 has a much better, smoother sound, maybe a wider dynamic range. The Podmic seems to have a narrow frequency response. In this test, with your voice the AT2040 is clearly a better sounding mic right out of the box. Listening with Sony MDR 7506 headphones.

The only thing I don't like about them is that the cord is really heavy and sometimes gets in the way. 2. Hey Tom! I already have a Rode Procaster, but I still watched for fun! The scarecrow gag actually made lol which is saying a lot for me! Unrelated to your excellent mic review: I'm still fascinated by the boldness (and skill) with which you mix Sony and Canon footage and you've given me the courage to ignore the turf war on KZbin and do what I want, which is to get the FX3 for A-Cam video and hang on to my R's for multicam and photography. Why didn't you get the FX 3 btw? 🤔
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
If you haven't seen my Final Cut Pro Preset video, you might want to check it out because that's where I talk about how I mix the cameras. It really hasn't been an issue for me. And to take it even further- the R footage is 1080 and the Sony is 4K. So that means it's mixing Canon HD footage with Sony 4K footage 😱 Honestly, both systems have their advantages, so it's kind of silly to draw a line in the sand. I love being able to use whichever tool will be best for a specific purpose. I really think the FX3 is awesome and the tally lights would be exceptionally helpful for me as a solo creator, but the a7SIII was cheaper and the viewfinder is helpful since I live in the super bright desert where screens don't always work great outside.
@kwameryan
@kwameryan 2 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck Aha... 😊 That makes total sense. My cameras work a lot in the Caribbean sun which makes me appreciate the Rs, but when they're outdoors they're rigged with an external monitor and hood, as would be the FX3. I don't like the Alpha series design language (although I've owned the A7iii) and I do love the grey FX3 look and those tally lights! I'll definitely check out your FCP video. I didn't check it out cause I use Resolve, but a preset is a preset! Thanks Tom! 👍🏾

I've been watching reviews and comparisons between these two mics for the past 3 days and still can't decide what would be a better choice, lol. Quick background: I work as a software engineer and, as I've been involved in a lot of calls lately, I decided to upgrade my microphone to something that would sound more professional and clear. For that, I'd say the Podmic is a clear winner. But, I also need good noise rejection (especially for the hums from my computer and typing on the keyboard) and shock protection, because I tend to tap a bit harder, sometimes. It seems like the AT2040 is better at this, but is it worth to trade the PodMic's sound quality for these features? I too have a more nasally mid-heavy voice and I'd like to counter that as much as I can, to sound more clear. I will be using a boom arm and pop-filter as well, because I am used to having the microphone close to the mouth (so I don't need to shout, haha), so the proximity effect will be rather present. Which mic you think would be recommend in this use case?

It depends on your budget, but the Scarlett 2i2 is a pretty standard place to start, although I’d recommend using a booster with these mics (something like the Klark Teknik CT1 is pretty affordable). If you can swing the Focusrite Vocaster Two then you won’t need a booster and everything will work perfectly out of the box.

How do you keep your PodMic from picking up vibrations? The internal shock mount on mine seems totally useless. It picks up vibrations from typing, tapping on desk, the lightest taps on the PSA1 arm, moving the arm, etc.
@tombuck

Hmm, it hasn't been a huge issue for me. I do have my arm mounted on a desk to my side, so it doesn't pick up vibrations from the main desk. But it hasn't really picked up much noise from the arm itself.

If I didn't already invest so much in the RODE ecosystem (thanks to your recommendation I have a Rodecaster Pro, multiple Podmics, multiple PSA-1 boom arms, and I'm about to get a couple of Rode Wireless GO lapel mics) I might consider switching to the Audio Technica AT2040. I haven't used the Motu myself, but it looks like they have their own EQ software: motu.com/products/software/mwc/masterworks-eq.htm I personally run everything through the Rodecaster, so that's typically where I handle any EQ. I'm pretty shocked at how different they sound! Especially since it seems like the AT is really being marketed as a direct competitor to the PodMic. I'm guessing that AT listened to customer feedback about the Rode and then tried to address that as best they could (lots of people say that the Podmic is too thin or leans too much to the high end). I think overall in this specific comparison I prefer the PodMic, but I'm also super used to its sound, so that might make me biased.

It's tough to say with certainty, but buzzing/humming is usually an issue with the cable. Some cables, especially cheaper ones, are more prone to electrical interference from computers/phones/etc. (And I don't say this as an elitist, "oh you should only use super expensive cables- I use a lot of cheap cables myself and encounter problems often 😁 ). Sometimes cables can fail too or have loose connections. Long story long, try swapping out your cable and seeing if that helps. Also check that your cable isn't running close to any power supplies. Sometimes having a cable near a surge protector can cause interference.
