I beg to differ, it tastes slightly of band-aid brand band-aid's and rotten oak. I think even the new batches of Old Grand Dad 114 ($20) are nicer in almost every way. That, of course, is just my opinion... and I don't mean it strongly - 1792 small batch is an ok whiskey with those slight tastes that I don't like and don't find in other similarly priced bottles.

What I think is neat is that I can’t find balcones where I live but I can find a local copper pot grain to glass bourbon for under 35 and it is by far my number one. It’s awesome that smaller local distillery’s are starting to really shine in local markets and it will be awesome to see them grow and spread.

Balcones is my favorite Bourbon which always surprises people up here where I am in NY but I just think it's such a distinct and delicious pour and pushes the boundaries of the Bourban tasing palate. I was crushed when I read that they were going to start moving away from it and eventually stop making it all together. I've already started to stockpile even though they said they have about 2 years' worth of stock still. At the price point, I actually grab at least one bottle every time I see it in a store. Sub 35, I'd say early times BiB. OGD 114 is a great pour too but I think early times is well rounded and balanced. I could do that one neat, in a cocktail or on the rocks and never feel guilty about how much I spent on that pour.

Woodford Reserve was my introduction to bourbon. I would have liked to see Maker's 46 (which can be found at just under $35) in this round up. It's a favorite budget whiskey for me now. It is funny that I am mentioning two bourbons when I gravitate more towards peaty Scotch, but my tastes in Scotch tend to keep out the more budget-friendly choices.

Woodford is my year round bottle, great for mixed drinks, neat, rocks, it will never break the bank, and it's super friendly to new people so I can offer it to guests and they won't be thrown for a loop like with some of my more heavy stuff. Balcones has definitely come into rotation during the summer though now that it's more available in my area.

Paddy's is my go-to neat sipper and I pay about $20 for a fifth. It's not that I'm not willing to spend more on whiskey, it's just that it tastes quite good for something with such a low price, almost as good as Tullamore DEW, my current favorite Irish whiskey. And the bourbon I will sip neat most frequently is Four Roses, which is $25 for a fifth.

My Budget picks - Irish: Paddy's, Scotch: Monkey Shoulder, Rye: High West Double Rye, Bourbon: Wild Turkey 101. Irish Whiskey has some of the best bargains going in budget whiskey. Sexton, Bushmills, Tullamore Dew, Fighting 69 are all great picks among others.

Wild Turkey 101 is the only whiskey I've ever actually sipped on and I used to buy a bottle maybe once a year with some cigars back when I smoked them. I think it goes good with a cavandish if you happen to smoke a pipe as well. But, I typically buy pretty cheap liquor compared to the stuff my friends drink. I'll only spend over $20 on a bottle if I'm getting absinthe or tequila but then again, I'm just cheap like that lol.

My budget Whisky would be The Quiet man Irish whisky, its like 25€ for 500ml bottle here and just good for the price but if i want a bottle for around 30-35€ i normally stick to Loch Lomond Original Scotch single malt, by far that is my favorite whisky out of the ones i have tasted. Woodford is my go to old fashioned bourbon, I always order that combo. I've drank a few liters of that Baclones bourbon and compared to their single malt I always felt it was sub par, but I can't complain too much because I clearly bought three bottles of it and finished them all. I'd still prefer Basil Haydens though.

Yeah. I don't drink 101 straight anymore. I did in my early twenties when it had an 8 year age statement and had older barrels in the blend. Rare breed is only $50, cheap for barrel proof, and 101 keeps getting younger. I did like the 12 year though.

Slane is my Irish choice for this price range. The non 8 Benchmark bourbons are excellent daily drinkers.

We used to get a lot of Compass Box offerings around here, but I haven't seen it in a while. I liked Peat Monster, and loved Spice Tree.

While what is sitting on my bar are all bottles far outside the price range, for guest who want a larger pour or something I don't normally drink I have a range under the bar. For bourbon there is Elijah Craig small batch, Four Roses small batch, 1792 small batch, and Woodford Reserve which between them covers most peoples pallets. There are bottles of Sugarfield Bourbon and Exclave Bourbon which is just outside the price range locally but about $60 a bottle if you can find it in the rest of the country. Other things in the bar in that price range which are worth a neat pour include Wildcat Brothers Noire Rum (needed to make a Rouler, the signature cocktail of Lafayette).

my top 3 budget pours are j.t.s Brown, Speyburn 10 year, Larceny. All great for under 35$.
