I’m a bio major, and for my group lab project this semester we chose to work with bacterial resistance to antibiotics derived from spices. We had a control - Rifampicin (RIF) - as well as Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and Cuminaldehyde. We’ve had to avoid abbreviating Cuminaldehyde in our final write-ups, as its abbreviation is generated in the same way as the other two. In doing our preliminary research, we found several papers discussing the properties of Cuminaldehyde, such as its molecular Docking and applications in Sauced Beef, all of which prolifically used the abbreviation. Many a giggle has been had over the course of this semester.

The "BARF" reagent you showed here is one of the more unusual ones. The much more common one is with plain old pentafluorophenyl groups, of which there are two possible varieties - either the neutral borane with 3 of them, or the anionic form with 4 of them. The former does have some uses, such as if you have an organometallic compound with alkyl groups directly attached to the metal (such as dimethyl zirconocene), the neutral borane "BARF" reagent will rip one of those alkyl groups off, leaving a formal positive charge on the metal and a weakly co-ordinating borate anion somewhere near it. As regards funny sounding silyl groups, check out the "Journal of Unpublished Chemistry", which reported some interesting ones: PropylIsopropylEthylSilyl, PropylEthylAmylSilyl, and CycloHexylIsopropylPropylSilyl, with the delightful acronyms of PIES, PEAS and CHIPS. Not sure if these actually exist or are ever used, but I don't see any reason why they couldn't be made.....

Ammonium and nitrate are relatively stable to begin with, as such things go. The reducing agent (ammonium) has already been partially oxidized and the oxidizing agent (nitrate) has already been partially reduced. Not much energy there, and relatively high activation energy. The cerium is already fully oxidized, not contributing any potential energy, and is neutralized by some additional nitrate that further dilutes the ammonium nitrate. It might still be able to deflagrate, I don't know, and even a wimpy compound that can exotherm and produce gas all by itself can cause specific kinds of trouble, and this one is also an oxidizer. I'd be surprised if it can detonate though.

Bremsstrahlung radiation is the most interesting kind IMO. Radiation so intense that shielding it turns it into another kind of radiation is crazy enough, but then the new kind is actually harder to stop because it's now photons instead of particles. Wild. Cherenkov radiation is actually a specific type of bremsstrahlung, and definitely my absolute favorite kind of radiation for various reasons. Heck, you can literally safely look down into the active core of some research reactors and see the unique blue glow with your own naked eyes. If that isn't the most immediately captivating demonstration of benevolent nuclear physics in action, I don't know what is.

Bhremsstralung is an interesting phenomenon. High energy charged particles are very easy to block. Things like solar wind and intergalactic protons. But, when a charged particle decellerates very quickly it sends out xrays that can have energies in the MeV range. You therefor want to use a light element light hydrogen, boron or carbon to block the charged particle to reduce formation of energetic xrays. But these light elements don’t block x-rays very good. If you optimizes you end up with light shielding on the outside of a manned space ship or similar; something like a plastic, beryllium, water filled tank or hydrogen fuel tank., under that you want a layer with higher density, like steel, and beneath that something even denser like tantalum. Breaking radation is also useful when you want to generate x-rays of a specific energy. You use an electron beam and you can tune that.
