The British Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS) allows certain people to travel to and around the Common Travel Area (CTA) (Ireland and the United Kingdom - excluding the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands) on a single visa for short stays only.
The only condition is that you need to first travel to the country that issued the visa. Unless you qualify for the short stay visa waiver programme or have a visa issued as part of the British Irish Visa Scheme (BIVS), a valid UK visa does not entitle you to travel to Ireland without a visa.
If you are a visa national and have a UK residence then you may be eligible to visit the following countries for holidays:
Albania, Georgia, Gibraltar, Montenegro,
Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Curacoa,
Dominican republic Sint Maarten Turks & Caicos
Whilst the information is fairly current - but will be worthwhile to double check before booking.

the irish visa scheme is vague... how do i know the amount of time that was given to me by the UK Border?? they usually don't put it in the stamp

Generally you are allowed to stay for 180 days or till the time your visa is valid whichever is earlier.. You need to keep a note at the date of your entry

@@ConroyBakerLtd yes that is in fact the maximum the visa allows, what im not sure is.. if i go to London for a weekend and the UK border me asks me how long will I stay and I reply two days, does that mean he has given me permission for two days or it's always 180 days. Also the people checking my visa from the point of origin before going to Ireland might not even be aware of this scheme.

You can still travel to the Republic of Ireland via Northern Ireland from the UK because there is no border between Northern Ireland and Britain, and there is no border between Northern Ireland and the Republic or Ireland.

how? so if you are holding a UK visa but not a national yet, you can visit dublin as well? won’t they look for an ireland visa?
