Personally id agree that it wasn't any of the three but the purpose that the country was made for fits the title perfectly as the HRE was supposed to be the unifying force (along with the Catholic Church) after the fall of The W.Roman Empire centuries earlier. The only problem is that the HRE never centralized power (or they were not good at centralizing it) and by the time the reformation divided Europe even further the emperor was at that point mostly a figure head than a ruler.

Just a point on the 'Scottish money' thing.... it's not actually it's own money. It's still the pound sterling, but it is printed in Scotland by the Royal bank of Scotland rather than at The Bank of England in London, England like the rest of the UK's money is. Not that it significantly affects the order, but São Tomé & Príncipe actually DOES have an English translation, which is “Saint Thomas & Prince”. However, the only country that this would affect in terms of alphabetical order is Saint Vincent & The Grenadines. And it’s not like a lot of people would complain about it given how small both countries are, so I’m sure it’s not a big deal at all.

Me Me ASEAN is like the EU but it's not a Union like the EU. It's more of an Alliance of South-East Asian nations and act more like the EU when is was still in the 1970/1980's. ASEAN includes: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thiland and Vietnam. At the moment, they're still trying to integrate all of the South East Asian Economies together by making trading and the movement of people easier :)

Well, you say that, but it might not stay that way for long. After the Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014, the Scottish Nationalist Party (which supports Scottish independence) absolutely swept the general election in Scotland. And when the EU Referendum came, and the UK obviously voted to leave, Soctland's support for staying in the EU was greater than their support for staying in the UK (Independence referendum was 55%/45%, but EU referendum was 62%/38%). So maybe Scotland will become independent after all.

Scotland does NOT have it's own currency. They print their own bank notes (maybe coins too? not sure) but they use pound sterling like the rest of the UK.

Just wanted to add that Scotland doesn't have its own currency, we all share the pound, it's just that there are a number of different banks permitted to print notes for these pounds. These include the main Bank of England ones, but also three Scottish banks and four in Northern Ireland. ....very important point this. Currencies are causing all sorts of heated exchanges over here what with the independence referendum and the Euro as well. Thanks :)

I had a feeling you'd go by the UN list. That list bends to political interests and skips legitimate sovereign states because certain powerful countries want to pretend these states don't exist. I would have gone by the Olympic list or the FIFA list. Probably Olympic if you want to skip Wales, N. Ireland, etc.

Well...as a Taiwanese, I can say practically no one in Taiwan believes we are the true government of China. Even the government now no longer publicises itself as "China" in those countries with diplomatic relations with Taiwan. (The official title is "Republic of China(Taiwan)" , not just "Republic of China"). Honestly, most people in Taiwan care very less about the things happening in China today, compared to those happening in Japan, the US or perhaps Rep. of Korea. Taiwanese government dares not to "surrender" their claims over its former territory just because the PRC government threaten to declare war on Taiwan as they view it as an act of seeking independence. So...STOP SAYING Taiwanese government still claim themselves as "Real China" or "the only China" as if this tiny island country is so greedy and impractical, the current constitution of ROC(Taiwan), which states and only states that the territory of ROC is the according to its existing national boundaries shall not be altered except by resolution of the National Assembly, is the legacy of the cold war and the result of Chinese suppression. After-all, let's be honest, who want to be call upon as a "Chinese" if he is never a Chinese citizen. That does not bring himself glory and proud, but more interrogation upon entering a foreign country and much discrimination in some parts of the world.
