Well, I think that many people dislike the French but not the country, tourist attractions and nature. French tend to be chauvinist, not very friendly to non French speakers, and they don’t do any effort at all to speak English, THE international language. But I live also part time in the south of France. If you’re fluent in French then you have a wonderful time. They can be extremely nice and very good friends, but it is extremely difficult to achieve that.
@membrax
@membrax 3 жыл бұрын
@@abrahamcusters2987 Thank you for your comment. Well, I'm always circumspect when one says that frenchs are chauvinists. As a frenchman I've been in quite many countries, and it made me realize that we the french are by far the less chauvinist people in the world, especially if you compare with "anglosphere" coutries such as US, UK..., with eastern Europe, northern Africa (that I know quite well), or even countries like Italy, Spain or Portugal (although people from all these countries are very nice, but they are also very patriotic, and for me that's not depreciative). It's also always annoying to ear a native anglophone complaining about french people not making any effort to speak english. Of course english is the international language, and when I'm travelling, things are easier when I meet people with which I can exchange in one of the languages I master, but it would never come to my mind to "complain" about someone who doesn't know a word of english (or french) if it is not his native language. As an example, if you visit old people in France (like my parents), you will find very friendly and welcoming people, but they have never learned english at school. So if you address them in english, and complain about the fact that they don't speak your language, they will just invite you to go fuck yourself (in french). Worse: they live in a part of France (south west) where some british people are living there for YEARS without making the effort to have a basic level of french (not all of them, of course). So maybe anglophones should use some mirrors and have a strong introspection, because they are the only ones who are always complaining about the fact that other people "don't speak english", whatever country they are talking about, or asking for english subtitles or traduction under any youtube video that uses another language. Believe me or not, but if your job is not international, you can live perfectly well in France and have a wonderfull cultural offer without knowing a word of english. And that's the same in many other corners of the world.

Not a surprise. I love Brussels, and my feelings is belgian mentality can be defined as the opposite of parisian mentality. They would say we think too much instead of acting. We (northern France) would say the contrary: think carefully, and then act. Sometimes they would be right, sometime they would be wrong.

As a Flemish Belgian this is painful to watch. I love France, I love French people. I studied a year in France and that was such an amazing experience. I have made friends for life there. I think and guess that most people in this video are joking. I love all our neighbors, and feel at home in all of them. The Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg are amazing. How can you even hate a country? If I hate something, it's the rain. You drive from Belgium to NL and it's raining, you arrive in NL it's still raining, that's the only thing I hate. I agree with one thing in this video, German is very hard to learn for most us, even if it sounds a lot like Dutch. I was raised in French/Dutch, learned Italian and English at a young age, when I was arround 16y we started having German class and I completely sucked at it. I was determen to learn the language, so I took extra lessons, watched every episode of Storm der liebe twice, went to Berlin that same year. I asked something in German, and the guy looked strangly at me and said, girl I have no idea what language you are speaking, do you speak English? hahahaha. I improved a lot by now...

I'm French and lived nearly 2 years in Belgium. I never felt so rejected in my whole life. My car wheels got destroyed twice for no reason (while Belgian cars nearby had nothing). In conversations, when people found out I was French, some would literally start racist rants, on how they hated the French, right to my face. What was ironic is that their main point was that the French were arrogant... But they were saying it on such an arrogant manner! Isn't it ironic to accuse someone of something while being the exact personnification of this something? As a consequence, I ended up adopting a dismissive speech towards my country in order to escape the hate, or trying as much as I could to make people believe I was Waloon. Anyway, I made some Belgian friends and met very friendly people there, but there is a real problem on this issue. This video shows that it wasn't just my imagination

Is not because the turistic place looks charming but this is not the real Belgium, specially not Brussels. The bitter reality is that you have junkies and drunk ppls everywhere, homless ppl. And alot of garbage and smell horribly because the ppl urinate everywhere. The weather is grey almost whole year. Every where is grey.. About the security in the town is also horrible, even in turistic areas, alot of young thugs everywhere the can harase your girl front of you amd beat you ass and rob your things and the police gonna do nothing about it. Mostly this thugs are immigrants from Somalia, Marrocco or Syria. And its like that since 80's. The services are incompetent also, the transport is not accurate. If you have a luck to speak French, well not a chance you have yo speack "perfectly" the both languages Dutch and French and even English.. and "maybe" you can find some job... if you are white occidental style guy and polyglot.. well not a chance, they gonna choose a guy from African country, even he has no skills and languages, just because of political correctness. Dont forget the rents, most of the houses and appartements are 400 years old, miserable, dirty, no isolation and you most show your paychecks and work contract and even say your origins to get a rent for a miserable 40 km2 for 750€ plus you have to give 2 month of warranty. The bills are salty too, for a country that raining almost whole year you can pay easy around 300€ hust for the tap water, you must pay also electricity and gas up to 300€, the internet is around 49€ ... The tax take from your salary, to give to lazy ppl who doenst work from 30 years since.. the same person who rob you and harrase you and pay drugs with your tax money.. The ppl are reserved and rude, you can literraly die or being harrased, nobody will cooperate for really. And the average salary is around 1600 or 1800€. You canmake calculations after paying your bills you will seeing that you have nothing in the end of month. You wanna enjoy some beer in the bars on downtown? Well if you are alone, the most of the bars, the bouncers dont let you in. (The basic beer is 5€), fastfood around 10€.

I'm French with Flemish roots by my grandfather, and it's always so funny to see a certain "hate" from Flemish. @Joseph Choiseul-Praslin Every Walloon, except for you, has had shown a much stronger preference for working in the Benelux than having anything to do with France. You can see the same here in this video. Maybe you're not a Belgian but some French Gaullist troll. In fact: there are Walloons in every Dutch genetic line including my own because when push came to shove and the Spanish, French or Austrians became trouble, they ran North - not South. The French were even more brutal on Wallonia than they were on the Flemish btw and Frenchifaction (continued in Belgium until after WW1) targeted both the Flemish and the Walloons. Trying to snuff out Walon as a language and all. They saw Walloons as mere provincial cattle and treated them accordingly. "ch'ti" and "chetif" were the kindest words they used for them (and for Northern France and for the Flemish as well). Worse: quite a few were "heretics" as well as Wallonia had been a hotbed of the Reformation. "Brothers ?". You must be suffering from a bad case of Stockholm syndrome. You're an entirely different people from the French in much the same way as the French-speaking population of Switzerland has nothing to do with France.
@thevoid5503
@thevoid5503 3 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Choiseul-Praslin OH I have been to Wallonia several times over and particularly Liège which is pretty much paired with Maastricht (together with Hasselt) and it's university has the biggest Neerlandistiek section outside of the Dutch speaking areas. You forget the few times that the French occupied much of what is now Belgium. You must be some French transplant.
@thevoid5503
@thevoid5503 3 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Choiseul-Praslin Dividing ? Sod off. I want the opposite: the status quo. I want a united Belgium that isn't fighting among itself in a strong Benelux and I am against further devolution: you're too small to be a disunited "United States" and each of you too big to be an independent insane asylum.. We're brother nations for Pete's sakes and we're sharing borders and we basically live on top of each other: this whole Hedwigepolder debacle is a headache for both of us (because of EU regulations) and so is the Doel-Tilhange-Borssele saga that has been irking both countries for the last 25 years and then some. So we solve some problems thr intelligent way: we pool our air force as well as our navy, we purchase our frigates together and when a border marker between us creates a legal no man's land, we move two markers and the problem disappears. That's why we work together and need to increasingly work together. We are too small to allow ourselves not too coordinate policy and we are going to need to have an elected Benelux Parliament to solve the remaining hurdles because our own politicians (be they Dutch, federal (Belgian), Flemish of Walloon are slower than snails.

The young fellow talking about the Dutch tourists at 2:48 is SPOT ON. I'm a Belgian Walloon. I wanted to take the family camping in the Ardennes last summer and MY GOD, 14 out of 15 campsites I looked up to book a spot were Dutch. The Dutch are aggressively buying up old campsites in the Belgian Ardennes, renovating them and opening them up to Dutch tourists. I was shocked to having such difficulty finding a campsite in my own French-speaking region where the owners could speak ... you know ... FRENCH ! I actually started playing a game with my 8 year old son which consisted of being the first to spot 3 cars with belgian licence plates and I swear it wasn't easy. I could look up dozens of cars with NL licence plates before I saw a B plate, and on 2 different occasions, that was the post office van ... It's baffling really.

Man, you wrote more propaganda in this comment section than the CCP in the last 3 years. We dont dislike france. We dislike annoyingly patriotic people who think france is the single greatest thing that ever happened to the world, and seem to believe that everyone should hold it on the same pedestal as they do. Sure, france is a beautifull country, but thats about it. We dont like people who arent self aware enough to realize that other people might not think france is as impressive as they think it is, if all you do is boast about how impressive your country is when most people don't think it's that special compared to other western European countries you are going to be percieved as a douche. Take a note from the brits, they are just as patriotic but when you talk to them they use self deprecating humor, or are critical about their own country. Even if you know they dont actually believe it it makes them come across as friendly and accommodating. Like we dont give a sh1t about any of the things you listed. You prove it yourself by claiming we are jealous. The fact that that thought never even occured to you while writing 30 different replies is exactly the attribute we don't like about certain french people.

Belgians hate France because Flanders is flat with not much forests too. Flanders is one of the poorest forest regions in Europe (Natuurrapport 2020 published by the Flemish Institute for Nature and Forest Research. Only Malta and Iceland rank lower.) And France has 169 000 km2 of forests (almost 6 times Belgium) + 86 000 km2 in French Guyanne (the largest tropical forest in the European Union). Oh and the Vlaamse Kuste is only 66 km long, while : France has got the largest EEZ (exclusive economic zone) in the world. 11 691 000 km² (worldatlas .com).. That’s why Belgians hate France. The two girls were obvious friends, and I guess she meant it as a joke because her friend was French. Most of the people in this video aren't older than 15y. They are just school kids. And the last guy was a French who hated French.. okay. As a Flemish Belgian I really love France and the French people. i studied a year in France and it was an amazing experience for me, I have made friends for life there. We go back every year. @@ME-eu9sf I live in Flanders, I am Flemish and we love the Netherlands, Don't generalize, because what you said makes no sence at all. Most of us love all our neighbors, and I would even say that Flemish are more connected to the Netherlands, because some regions like Limbourg, are totally the same people. The Dutch and Belgian part feel more connected to eachother than to their own country. I feel the same about Belgian Brabant and Dutch Brabant. Of course we like Germany and Germans too, but many of us stuggle with the language. Like the girl said in the video, the language is hard to learn for us, because Flemish is more connected with French, we use a lot of French words and we learn it at a very young age.

I totally understand the will of Flanders independance, but sometimes it's too radical and just obsessed with the linguistic.

Historically, the Flemish region was extremely rich (big ports like Antwerp and before that Bruges and other citied like Ghent, Ypres, Brussels; but also former cities of Dunkerque etc.) making it very desirable for the French crown (also from a strategic point - it traded a lot woth the English and was good reinforcement of the northern border; you know the one that Germany exploited a couple of times). In other words, the French were obsessed with Flanders (just like most of Europe - Spain, Austria etc. - in fact; because the region was (economically) important and had a central location (it's often called "the battlefield of Europe"), but also to mess with France; to keep them in check) and wreaked havoc. But the worst is yet to come. That's not France in particular but "la Francophonie". Belgium got its independence mostly because it was backed by France. In reality it was no more than a French puppet state - the founders were Francophone liberals (the same who were in power in France); initially they even wanted to join France. The situation became very oppressive to the Flemish (about 60% of Belgians today; who contribute about 80% of the economy). One of the founders proposed to put policies in place that were so oppressive so that all Flemings would become Francophones ("to remove Germanic elements"). This worked fine in Brussels (went from 95% Dutch-speaking to well, what it is today; where you might not even get served if you speak Dutch). Long story short; Flanders was war-torn when Belgium was formed due to the constant warfare. Wallonia had lots of resources and also got most of the investment, leaving Flanders with almost nothing (and then there's the famine too). Flemings were treated as 2nd rang citizens (by some even compared to "negroes"). Kings (among who Leopold II) weren't even allowed to speak Dutch in public. In WW1 the amount of deaths are disproportionate (with various claims and explanations to why). Though things started becoming more and more fair, especially since Dutch was also recognized as an official language. After WW2 Flanders did get some investment (Marschal plan, but also Belgium realising that the Wallonian industrial model was becoming outdated). Flanders currently is the economic engine of Belgium, yet a Fleming's vote is only 60% that of a Wallonian one and there are massive transfers to Wallonia yearly (which don't fuel to Wallonian economy, but it's social security - which helps keep the Parti Socialiste in power). That combined with the history I just explained in short means that many Flemings don't really like Francophones in general; as they feel like "la Francophonie" has been the biggest threat to their own identity (I mentioned Dunkerque too) and the one thing that was always there to destroy Flemish prosperity. There's one answer; it won't be the same for everyone; but most who feel resentment (not hate) to Francophones/France/Wallonia; this is why.

@@ewoudalliet1734 Are the Flemings even aware that people in Wallonia back then didn't even speak French but spoke various Walloon dialects ? And that they were also ruled by a bourgeoisie that imposed its language on them ? Are they aware that Latin was the only official language of Hungary at that time ? I mean, the society of the XIXth century was very different from today. It's such a stupid idea to read a history book, see that the 2% of the French-speaking bourgeoisie was mean to Flemish and then project that onto today's Walloons. I mean, grow up, be wiser than that. Just use your head,
@ewoudalliet1734
@ewoudalliet1734 3 жыл бұрын
@@Leopold_van_Aubel Well, that's a really good question. Most Flemings, in my experience, are not aware. And I think the education system purposefully hides that fact. Because it's really no secret that there were attempts to frenchify Flanders (even though only briefly mentioned in Flemish education). Nationalists have used that argument before to evoke an emotional sentiment. And if someone tells you that frenchification had worked before, in this very country, then that pushes a lot of Flemings to that side (and it does; I remember my chemistry teacher talking about it; I was unaware of it at the time as well; all my former classmates were shocked to say the least). So, there's a pretty good reason most Flemings are unaware of that. It's bad propaganda for the Belgian state and especially towards the Flemings for obvious reasons. "And that they were also ruled by a bourgeoisie that imposed its language on them" Dangerous comment. Depends on what time period you're talking about. But it's not an argument at all (because person A did a bad thing before person B did it, then it doesn't mean that it's okay for person B to continue that practise). That's shifting blame; a fallacy. It's true that the French language has been imposed on Flemings, but not always. What's even more important is the scale at which this happened. The Frenchification of the Belgian state at the time exceeds all. There's a reason it was so succesfull. The French even never managed to Frenchify Flanders that successfully in such a short period of time (and that's saying a lot). "Are they aware that Latin was the only official language of Hungary at that time ?" What's the relevance of Latin and Hungary? Now you're just blabbering... "I mean, the society of the XIXth century was very different from today." Congratulations. "It's such a stupid idea to read a history book, see that the 2% of the French-speaking bourgeoisie was mean to Flemish and then project that onto today's Walloons. I mean, grow up, be wiser than that. Just use your head," Hmm... quote me projecting the blame of frenchification of today's Walloons. Because I never did this (maybe you're associating me with people who do; maybe you're prejudiced to feel like the Walloons get the blame for Frenchification, I don't know; but this is a straw man fallacy; I never said anything like that). I merely stated how Frenchification affected Flanders and in doing so I even did my very best not to refer to a single group of people but just to "la Francophonie" or "Frenchification"; not the Walloons, not even just Francophones. So perhaps you should use your eyes properly before commanding me to use my head. That being said; I do feel like going into this a little further, as you brought it up. During this Frenchification process, there was very little to no opposition from Wallonians, who knew very well what was happening to the north of them. In fact, most opposed economic aid (and I mean; the situation in the XIXth century was very different from today; Wallonia is currently a failed economy, with the socialists only capable of maintaining power through spending more and more money on populist goals without investing it properly; whilst Flanders was a war-torn and starving region... says a lot, doesn't it - even for the XIXth century that's unusual). In fact, the starvation in Flanders fueled the Wallonian economy (migration = labour force). And far more Walloons, not just your measly 2% (which only held power in Belgium for so long), felt like they were "superior" to and more "civilised" than their Germanic neighbours (but this wasn't exclusive to Walloons, but Francophones in general; hence the succes of the FDF in Brussels).

I think people who live in Brussels mostly hate french people because of recent events ; we have quotas in our school for french people like 50% for french and 50% for belgians + other countries. They study in our country because their schools are really expensive so it is difficult for us when we want to work in medicine. It is pretty unfair. Plus they are a lot of french people in some neighborhood(mostly Ixelles n St Gilles) so they contribute to gentrification. Brussels is less "brusseiler" by years. Also in my job we are few belgians and a lot of french people. I also noticed that french people tend to correct or mocked our "french" (accent or some words) or critisize our food a lot. I have not that problem with french people coming from Bretagne.
