I am embarassed by her answer. The thing is we don't know much about Africa (the mainland), not much about it is taught in school. And the complete absence of tourism from the mainland sure doesn't help much. Most of us would first see mainland Africans in Europe or North America. Just imagine. But keep in mind most of our educated people love Africa and consider themselves African.

Madagascar has been isolated from Africa for so long, so some people feel detached to the whole African continent. Back when I still lived there (I moved abroad 3 years ago), I did a little experiment at my workplace where I asked my colleagues if they'd identify themselves as being Africans. But the majority of the people that answered said no, and it's because there's this deep belief that they would identify themselves as Malagasy since our ancestors came from South East Asia. However, I lived in the capital, so if you try to ask that question in other provinces, the answers might change since we are a mix of different origins, not just Asian. We also have Ancestors coming from Africa. As other people said, the education system is also at fault. Not much is taught about Africa in school. In history courses, they mainly cover topics that revolves around the major events in the world, such as WW1, WW2, the Cold War etc. I don't remember learning anything about Africa in general.

As a malagasy let me provide an explanation. Merina people are very much from an Asian ancentry (I believe Indonesia, Malaysia and Philllipines) so they already have the Asian blood in them. For the more controversial explananation, Malagasy merina people do not like marrying Africans. They tend to lean more towards Asians and Europeans so that's why the Asian gene survived for so long. I grew up in Antananrivo and it is very uncommon for anyone to marry an African. (Yes the reason is skin color, believe it or not). The reason why some people do look African is because some parts of Madagascar (Southern part of Madagascar) include people from African ancentry. It sounds racist but it is also cultural. African culture clashes with Malagasy culture a lot. Asian culure kind of mixes with Madagascar's own culture. We love preserving our traditions like that. I hope that helped.

Historical reasoning, we got colonized by France and to this day you can see the impact. In some schools/classes it is not allowed to use the local language and we have to speak french instead. They refuse to give back some of our islands. Lots of expats in the island act like they own the place and they’re very entitled. Our president is french also.

France is the only country that makes historical sense here. For the reasons mentioned above and more. I mean, every single one of us would have a Grand Parent that told us stories of how they escaped the great reprisal of 1947. They exterminated a fraction of the population of the time. A forgotten gen*cide. So you would understand why many people see France in the same way Poland saw Germany for instance. Many would want to move on but France simply doesn't allow it. They keep some of our islands, and every political leader who tried to steer away from French political, economic and linguistic dominance gets overthrown relatively quickly.

It's like most of the answers are "No, I like every country" When I can name 5 right off the top of my head, it's easy to choose the countries you don't like, for me it's Israel (because of the occupation), the United States, (because of their politics and loose morals), Egypt, (too dusty, and too many people), Venezuela, ( crime and oppression), Brazil, (too hot and too many naked people) some places in India because of (the cast system and too dirty), France ( very racist), and Ukraine.
