Dame Judi is a really good friend with the Queen Camilla. She is a stable in so many culture related events Camilla organises in the palace etc. The royals have a very beautiful Italian style castle with its own beach, which was favourite of the Queen Victoria but the late Queen ElisabethII for example never visited. The royals have there a small apartment and Judi & Camilla spent some years ago a couple of days there.

It's my dream to be able to see some of the classics in a cinema! I'm still young (ish) but I just don't enjoy films today. They're not even vaguely entertaining.. and not very savoury either. Imagine seeing a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film in a cinema! Or Roman Holiday, or the Sound of Music. One can dream!

I remember the film that broke my heart was the story of Edith Cavell, cried for ages at end of this and the portrayal was magnificently done by Anna Neagle. I was a St Johns Ambulance member and Edith Cavell was our group name in her honour. Ah memories. Love from the seaside x

Me too. I know the history of the British Royal Family. Consequently, I watched Crown , the series. Season one and two were close to the true story. When they changed the main actress and actor, the show went downhill. I watched 6 minutes of Season Three , that was it. After that, it was a fictional story.

Anna Neagle started out as Marjorie Robertson, a simple chorus girl, until picked out of the line by Herbert Wilcox who was besotted with her, and determined to make her into a star - which he did, very successfully. At the time she played Queen Victoria, the fact that she was Wilcox's mistress for many years (while he was still married with four children) was kept very hushed-up. She and Wilcox finally married during WW2, after he'd been able to get a divorce. A young actor who appeared in both the Queen Victoria films with Anna Neagle, had a girlfriend (a dancer on stage) who had known "Marjorie" during her dancing years, and said Miss Neagle's later 'regalness' was a demeanour she perfected to suit her image of the classy ladies she depicted on-screen. Apparently, when she started out, back in the early 20s, she was nothing of the sort!

Heard of Anna Neagle, can't recall any of her films but I will check them out. Sounds like a great actress given Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret enjoyed her films. So I have a question. Is it likely that Royalty will have seen themselves and their relatives portrayed in films, and then been influenced by what they have seen, how they have been portrayed, how their character's were dressed etc. in the films? Probably impossible to answer but intriguing. Lovely story.

Anna Neagle was wonderful! I confess I am not a fan of Helen Mirren and I freely admit that I haven’t watched, nor will ever watch, the fictitious Crown. I was fortunate to be born before King George’s premature death, so i was there from the beginning of Queen Elisabeth’s reign to its end. She was unique and I feel privileged to have lived through her reign. It annoys me that many of her younger subjects haven’t a clue about her era.

Yes I was born during king George rein, I grew up watching princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, they were both lovely, and later watch Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip wedding, did not have a TV back then but watched it at the cinema.
@katyb27932 ай бұрын
Do you mind me asking you both, what was the Royal Family like back then, and how has it changed? I wish with all my heart I could have lived through Her Majesty's entire reign. I read a brilliant book about World War II called Mrs. Milburn's Diaries and she spoke with such love, and unquestioning respect for the Royal Family, and Winston Churchill. It seems entirely different today, although there are many who still love the Royal Family.
@filomenadavies69982 ай бұрын
@@katyb2793 Oh gosh! It would take a lot of time to do that! The Royal Family was held in great esteem in postwar Britain - in fact Hitler had called the then Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) the most dangerous woman in Europe - because they refused to budge from London when it was being bombed relentlessly. She expressed relief when Buckingham Palace was hit, as she could then look the people in the East End of London in the face. (She and the King regularly visited places bombed out in the Blitz.) It seems that history - and recent history - is no longer taught in schools as it was back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Such a pity. Hope this helps.😊
@katyb27932 ай бұрын
@@filomenadavies6998 it does thank you!! I'm Australian, and sadly our history lessons were pretty basic. We focused on Australian history and some of world war 1, 2 and the Cold War. But that doesn't even scratch the surface! And we learnt absolutely nothing about the Royal Family, even though they are also our Royal Family. I personally love history, and love the Royal Family, so I'm constantly doing my own research, watching documentaries etc. But I think knowing our history is so important so future generations don't make the same mistakes. For instance, England nearly starved through the second world war because they were relying on buying many food stuffs from overseas. But what are we doing today? Relying in international trade for not only food, but other necessities! I don't want to say too much on here, but if we ended up at war with a certain country, we would no longer be able to buy any electrics, anything made from plastic, a lot of medical equiptment, etc because we don't make them anymore and rely pretty much on one country to manufacture them. We haven't learnt from past mistakes! And the majority of the population don't realise this because they don't know their history.
