For those not aware “a coming out.” Was when a lady of noble birth like Rose reaches a certain age and is presented to the Royal Family and everyone at court and where suitable matches to find a suitable husband of title are arranged. Lady Sybil had hers but it was never shown.

I went to graduate school with a "southern belle" who told me these "coming out balls" or "presentation balls" were still being held in her hometown of Mobile Alabama in the late 20th Century. "Presented" to whom??-- we have no royalty in America. And there were separate balls for white girls and black girls, as segregation continues its ugly legacy. As a westerner, I was shocked! The South truly is "different," and still hasn't come to terms with losing the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.

Prime minister Disraeli also wrote a popular novel called Endymion, and when talking to The Queen would refer to We Authors, which she liked. She also had a great sense of humour and never actually said, 'we are not amused.'. That is now ascribed to Elizabeth I. Victoria was frequently amused, at one lunch having to hide her tears of laughter with her napkin.

I just love how Cora's mother flippantly refers to her "cottage" in Newport. If you've ever spent time in Newport and Europe, those "summer cottages" on Bellvue's mansion row are essentially the American equivalent to the grand castles of Europe 😂😂😂

That's actually what the Newport wealthy called their palaces--"cottages." Cora's mother wasn't being flippant since she used the name everyone used for those grand homes. It stemmed from the fact that Newport summer homes up until the 1840s were literal cottages--small, wooden homes built in the New England style. Then the wealthiest plantation owners from the South discovered Newport and loved the place. It was a great, breezy escape from the sweltering, humid summers down South. They bought up some of these literal cottages and expanded them into large, New England-style homes. However, these edifices were still called "cottages." Then New York society discovered Newport in the 1870s. In the 1880s New York's top families started tearing down these normal-sized homes for actual palaces. The Astors were the first to do so, soon followed by the Vanderbilts. But they still continued to call these palaces "cottages," which I guess was a bid to retain the tradition from long ago? Who knows.

I had an elderly neighbour now long dead whose heyday was the Twenties, she once told me she was glad I liked to wear sensible court shoes with kitten or cuban heels and showed me how she had ruined her feet wearing the fashionable pointed shoes of that era. Alistair Bruce (who plays the role of the man announcing each debutant) is a well known historian - he was instrumental in insuring that details in the Downtown Abbey series were all correct. He did the commentary for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and for the coronation of King Charles III.

“The “coming out” of a young woman represented a change in her status from child to adult and her “introduction” to society. This became formalized in English aristocratic society in the first half of the nineteenth century through the Victorian period. It's a pity that the character of the Prince of Wales was so dull. He never wanted to be king largely because he enjoyed the society parties. The actor playing the PoW in Downton Abbey has no personality, certainly does not have the looks that the PoW had, which had women swooning over him. He didn't have the personality which made him very popular amongst the men. He was a dull "stick" who had no conversation, no personality and, as shown at the party for Rose, couldn't dance - clumping around he dance floor.

@@SummerRain368 I have to disagree re Cora's mother. He was having fun with how the aristocracy viewed Americans at the time (and vice versa) and only Shirley MacLaine could have played that. I especially loved, after she sang "Let me call you Sweetheart" the silent but totally startled reaction of the Dowager (so many words in that silence) and then the startled look as Cora's mother kissed her hand. As to the Prince, he did more than offend the Crown. King George V had stated that 12 months after his own death, the prince would have ruined himself, so the Crown was already offended. I would have liked to know more about the relationship between Harold and Madeline. They just touched on it in this episode but it would have been really interesting, considering he didn't think she was like all the others who were just after his money. Paul Giamatti is a great actor!

What I was referring to was that despite the games between Madeline's father and Harold's mother, there was a spark between Harold and Madeline, despite the initial hesitancy and expectations of gold-digging. I remember reading (Edward VIII's autobiography?) that these functions became more and more ridiculous during George V's reign, as the greater the length of the debutante's train became a fashion statement, and they got longer and longer to the point they were tripping over each other. They would arrive with the train draped over their arm, and then at the door to the throne room drop it and the chamberlains would then spread it out behind them before they walked in. Too bad they didn't show that.

Yes and Frances Donaldson's --- bio -- Edward VIII actually thought them anachronistic. Had he stayed on the throne, he would have changed a lot of court life, as would have Willis Simpson. I read a hilarious account of when she saw Balmoral, and said, "Oh, this tartan has got to go!" Much to the horror of the servants. She even complained that there was "not a green vegetable in sight" at the dinner table!

I wonder if the tradition of the Coming-Out Ceremony started out as a way for the king to get first dibs on who could marry the heir to the throne. And if the king was a widower; who *he himself* could marry. If so, I bet in Henry VIII's time the Coming-Out Ceremony was equivalent to selecting a sacrificial virgin.

It wasn't. Just two Kings married English noblewomen, practically every other king or queen married foreign royality. Edward IV really is the only true example, having scandalously married a 'commoner' instead of a French princess. While Henry VIII had quite a traditional first marriage. The only two other examples are Kings who were younger brothers, and thus never likley to be King, so had more freedom. George VI and Richard III.

Like Alex said, this wasn't really the case. In Anglo-Saxon England or really in any country/province/region/kingdom where the main conflicts and threats are internal, it makes perfect sense to marry royals off to high-ranking noblewomen, because it means that they're families are now allied with the crown. But if a country is more international and England/Britain definitely was by this point, it'd be a waste for a Monarch to marry a noble from their counrry and waste an alliance with another country. While many of the English Kings had affairs and married multiple times, Henry VIII is an oddity. Which is why he stirred up so much trouble.

Probably not. The heir to the throne only married foreign princesses. Nobility was beneath royalty. If tradition had been maintained, Prince William would have married Madeleine of Sweden for example (they are actually of the same age !).

Shivadasa The tradition began as early as the 16o0s, where women of high society (or noble birth) were presented in court to the King and Queen of the day for the first time. It continued for many centuries in the same kind of fashion. Each year, young women from ‘well-to-do’ families were presented in court. From this point, they were expected to mingle in high society and were treated as adults. It was also hoped that their entrance into high society would lead to ‘suitable marriages’. Queen Elizabeth II finally banned the practice of the elitist debutante balls in 1958 within the UK, in the midst of a whole load of controversy. The last debutante young women were presented in court that very same year. Revivals have been attempted, but none on a particularly large scale and the practice has largely died out in the United Kingdom.

One funny thing I just realized is all the different costumes worn by the domestics and aristocrats in that scene. You have beefeaters from the 17th century, those wig wearing "butlers" from the 18th century, the guards and announcer are dressed in 19th century style, the noble men are also in the 19th century while the ladies are in the 20th century... If Martha Levinson really existed, I believe she would have mused about the English not "letting off of tradition's hand."
