Which Digimon Virtual Pet Should You Get?

I had my wife test the DM20 as her first v-pet. She found it complicated and difficult. The concept of overfeed and % of victory for fights and poops which makes you sick so quickly. Sometimes she does not go beyond the champion stage. I made her try DMX and things were much better. The level system was understood directly, the cold mode made her experience more pleasant when she was busy and the zoom on the face helped to better understand the creature she was seeing. All this to say that for a total beginner DMX is really the best.

My biggest pet peeve with the X devices are how they do not respect your sleep at all. The latest stage Digimon go to sleep at midnight. Every morning, at around 7:00am, as soon as anything results in the screen turning on (usually being poop), it'll start doing its daily "dice roll" thing, where it beeps a lot until either you push a button or a certain amount of time passes. That gives you a maximum of seven hours of sleep. If you try going back to sleep after that, good luck. You'll be getting random encounters every ten minutes. Additionally, they do this thing that most modern devices do, which drives me crazy. They'll evolve in the middle of the night, and make a bunch of noise doing it. You could mute the device, but that's a good way to end up with a dead Digimon. So what I ended up doing was freezing it over night, changing the time to 11:59pm the next morning, so its age would actually go up, then correcting the time. This is manageable, but a bit of a pain. So far, the Colors are the ones I like best. The latest they fall asleep is 11:00, and they wake up at 8:00, which actually gives me enough time to sleep. They still have a habit of evolving at 3:00am, but I can be confident I will wake up before they do, or at least not long after. So muting them isn't a big deal. Additionally, their age is actually based on real time passed, rather than just going up by one each time the time changes to midnight. So it actually reflects how much time you've spent raising it, it's not easily abused to get a high number, and you don't have to do that time manipulation stuff to get their age to go up if you freeze them before midnight.

I definitely wish the vital BE was a bit more but as a fitness "companion" it really works for me. I was going to work out anyways, so now I can lvl up a digimon at the same time??? It also encourages me to workout more/longer to build those stats. So Im building up digimon while the digimon are giving me a reason train harder. Its like a feedback loop, so awesome

A lot of my friends don't know anything about Digimon, not even the anime, so I usually recommend the DM20 to them despite its drawbacks just because of the variety of Digimon in it. It gives them a really large sample of Digimon new and old, I feel. Once they get used to it or grow tired of it I usually recommend they switch over to the DMX. But anyway, this is definitely a useful video for people just getting into Digimon v-pets! From now on I think I'll share it with any friends who are interested. ^^

@@TheZeroNeonix Exactly, the Colors have some quality of life improvements over the DM20 and look nicer, obviously, but they're also way more expensive than the DM20 so it definitely seems more for someone who's already into the V-pets rather than someone just starting out.

@@pn2294 I definitely would, especially if you're new to Digimon. The DM20 has all 5 of the original eggs in one device, plus bonus eggs for newer Digimon like Dracomon and Jesmon, so if you're unfamiliar with Digimon then you're bound to be familiar after playing with the DM20 for a while. Then, if you decide you really enjoy it, you could move onto a more expensive device like the Digimon Color.

@@pn2294 Digimon color in my opinion is exclusively for hardcore fans. Expensive, scarce because of Premium Bandai, and roster is limited to each version - they're pretty much revamps of the original vpets, while DM20 has all versions in one (with bonuses) so you don't run out of Digimon to raise anytime soon. The color is $100+ (Japan import) while DM20 is like $20 on Amazon with US/International shipping.

With the Pendulum 20th you can improve the button issue somewhat if you have some spare OG pendulum buttons and put those in. Same deal with pendulum Z if you find their buttons an issue as well. You have to trim the reset button of the OG buttons down a bit first though.

I wish there was a v-pet where you could customize the roster. I want spooky monsters but better themed than the spooky pendulums. I want to make a full dino v-pet with only dinosaurs and sensible branches. Why hasn't anyone built a digimon x or pendulum emulator on a pi zero or something where you can pick out the roster?

I'm waiting for a Digimon pendulum Color and Digivice color that come out at the end of this year. I have all the DM 20th and DMXs that came out in the US. I'd recommend people get one of each and decide from there if they want anymore. Having a friend raise Digimon with you is also way more fun.

I bought the Vital Hero for $20 on Amazon (Canadian) Thankfully I set up and updated the app on my phone so I'll be able to use that. That said: for my first Digimon it's a really good pet. Sure I wish I had a little more input into battles, but honestly that's my only real complaint. I don't have to clean poop, dispense medicine, bath or discipline. Letting me focus on walking, the missions or just working out in general. It's been keeping motivated but also doesn't interfere with the rest of my day (I'm 37) I'd highly suggest it for your first Digimon and or first time fitness motivator.

The X is awesome, but i don't run them as often as i was expecting because, i'm usually doing casual runs, and i just want one with me but i don't want to think too much about requirements to get a specific mon, i rather let fate decide it's evolution, i prefer the Digital monsters or a Pen, even my DM 20s i have 5 each has a different roster so that i can just pick the device and not worry about the roster.

My first digimon v-pet was the glow in the dark version 20th, and it was a ton of fun. I wound up raising Omnimon alter-s and Rasielmon (i think it was rasiel? Mightve been raguel) but i havent done much since :p I also got the red/black and white/blue digimon X devices later, but i dont remember any digimon i raised besides Alphamon lol

Do the pendulum color will be harder to obtain than other pendulum over time ? I want a pendulum so bad but the only one I can afford are pendulum Z (not all) or color... And for new digimon in DMC, there is Shin Monzaemon who wasn't here before. (Or I never saw him before?)

10:21 Humulos, why is it bad that they made Jogressing easy? Is it too easy to accidentally Jogres when you hadn't meant to?

There's just no restrictions, so you can evolve to Stage IV and immediately Jogress to Stage VI, which cheapens things for me. Really there's always been things you can do to Jogress faster, but this makes it trivial. On both the PenC and PenZ, I limit myself to only doing backup Jogress to make the experience more enjoyable.

Bandai just doesn't tend to go back to devices other than the Digital Monster and Digimon Pendulum, except in cameos here and there. The DMX only happened because it was a way for them to reuse the existing mold of the DM20. We can always hold out hope though!

Would definitely recommend them, and pre-ordering them is vital. They are not sold officially outside of pre-orders, so after release they get much more expensive and hard to find since you can only get them from resellers.

I'm concerned I have a decent collection DM 20s complete set of Xs and now the three current color pends but I never use gloves handling mine, are the buttons going to go bad quicker?

I wouldn't worry about it at all, I normally don't wear gloves when handling my devices and have only ever seen one device with any problems, specifically the Japanese Red Digital Monster X. Not sure if gloves would have helped there either, as that device just smudges like no other. Only reason I have gloves on for this vid was because I had some cuts on my hand that I didn't find visually appealing and didn't want that to be on camera haha.

What Virtual Pet is the one with the Kenji Watanabe artwork one based on? I know the one with the As’maria artwork is not released yet but do you know what that one will be like too? Also do you have anything to say about the Tamagotchi that are about non Digimon series? They have ones based off of Kingdom Hearts, One Piece and a few other notable properties.

I realized thst my childhood fav vpet was the deep savers pendulum cycle, so I can't look at any pendulums without seeing them as inferior and ugly. But the chances of them getting a re-release are low, lol, so Im going to get a pendulum colour when it comes down in price

I find the pendulum way too noisy to carry around if you find yourself in an environment where constant jingling would cause interference. Even if its just in a pocket every step is a racket.

We loved them, but my parents didn't as we didn't really know how to take care of them and were sad when they died but ALSO my school banned them so my parents had to take care of them during school hours (Because the whole family was too dumb to manipulate the clock I guess...) Needless to say, once the batteries died my parents refused to buy more, claiming that they were special japan-only batteries and we couldn't find them in the USA and were veeeery against buying anything similar to a v-pet for us again. By the time I discovered Digimon my folks were savvy to what the digimon vpets were and not only could we really not FIND any locally, but my folks just plain did not want us to have any more vpets. The closest I got was a Frontier D-Scanner I was able to get my grandma to get me years later from the internet, and learning it was vaguely "Tamagotchi-esque" my mom wasn't super pleased with the gift, and a few years later she gave it away to a kid she was babysitting while I was in summer school (Something she did frequently with stuff she viewed I didn't need/use anymore) and it's honestly hard to find another one for a decent price that functions. As an adult I live with my parents helping out on the farm, but I now have money and can buy whatever vpets I want with a little shelf displaying my Tamagotchis and Digimon.

I find it highly unlikely that Bandai would make new versions of those devices unfortunately. They didn't do anything for their 20th anniversaries, and generally stick with repurposing the original two device series instead.

@@humulomon It's a bit disappointing if you ask me, they already have a blue print and design that is already there to remake the new version. Hope they take note of this. But yeah it's kind of suck to know that the Vpet with this unique is hard to find at a reasonable price.
