Huddersfield's league history took a huge nose dive 50 years after their title wins. Never out of the top two divisions;1972 they played in Division One, in 1975 they kicked off in Division Four and were stuck there 5 years (and returned later) and have been a yo yo side for decades. I would say Championship should be their minimum level though.

@@infrasleep as a Huddersfield fan born this side of the 70s it's just completely alien to me that there was a time we were a dominant force!

Probably the first table ranking list I've seen that didn't rely on too much "recency bias." Most other KZbinrs and even so-called professional football pundits, often skew WAY too much towards recent memory of club's performances, rather than their traditional status within the respective English leagues. A very well-balanced list.
@Huayra21Ай бұрын
tbf I think it was a lot easier to win trophies back then because there were no “big6”. It’s so much harder to be successful in the last 20ish yrs and even maintaining top division football is a huge achievement. That’s why leicesters pl for example is massive. For me that’s more impressive than winning 2 top divisions in the 70s
@petef7323Ай бұрын
Pretty much spot on pal. The likes of Bournemouth, and Brighton are pretty much punching way about their weight historically.
@temporaryuseraccount0012Ай бұрын
Yeah, for real. Which is absolutely no slur on those clubs. Quite the opposite, it's a testament to how well their current ownerships are running those clubs. But they are playing "leagues" above their traditional ranking within the football pyramid. It will be interesting to see just how long they can continue to maintain that overachievement. History suggest, that once their ownership changes hands (whenever that will be), clubs who do overperform so much, quickly revert to type and recalibrate back to their traditional standing.
@petef7323Ай бұрын
@temporaryuseraccount0012 exactly this. 💯
@paulhanson5164Ай бұрын
True, but history changes, what really limits a club is the size of the local population. I'm a Villa fan who moved to Bournemouth 15 years ago and back then you saw more Villa fans around here than Bournemouth fans, now every other bugger is wearing Bournemouth gear, they start building the new ground soon. With a metropolitan population of over half a million, half that again nearby and no local rivals this town could support a big club.
@temporaryuseraccount0012Ай бұрын
@@paulhanson5164 I'm sorry, but I do believe that Bournemouth is the kind of club which will be relegated before too long. Perhaps, within the next five seasons or so. I do not regard Bournemouth as an example of a club that could break the mould long term, to become a top club, when traditionally, it has never been. History is not something to be easily disregarded, as thoughout history, many many clubs have experienced periods of prosperity and austerity and success and disaster. And yet, it is still more-or-less the same main clubs who time and again, rise back to the top. Bournemouth have never been one of those clubs, so it would be a small miracle for them to buck the trend.
@paulhanson5164Ай бұрын
@@temporaryuseraccount0012 Don't particularly disagree with you, I just think geography is almost as important as history in regards of potential. And few clubs have so many people nearby coupled with such a dearth of local rivals.

Pleased to see that Rovers make the cut, even if only just! I know we've been in a rut since 2010 thanks to our "esteemed" owners but, aside from the 70s, 80s & 99-01 we've been a First Division / PL club, & regularly attracted 50-60,000 fans in better days; not bad for a town that even now only has a population of 130,000 and many other clubs in the area. In that context, & given the recent mismanagement at the club, the crowds we get even now aren't too bad. We've only spent 3 seasons outside of the top two divisions, in our 149 year history. As founder members of the Football League & Premier League, the only founding club to have won both, the most successful town team in England and the only club to have won a major trophy in each of 1800s, 1900s & 2000s, we have a unique place in football history that should rightly put us in the top echelons in any such list.

A lad that went by the name of Dickie Guy who played in goal for the Dons played a major part in their win against us. If my memory serves me right, Wimbledon made a draw against Leeds United, (0-0 at Elland Road), before going out in the replay getting beaten by Leeds. So Dickie! Wimbledon and Notts County have 14 and 30 top flight appereances and 1 fa cup each. Easily bigger than Millwall. Now West Ham have played top flight 67 seasons and won 3 fa cups. Derby, Portsmouth, Burnley and Boro have 65,37, 60 and 61 years top flight and won 2,2,2,0 champions, 1,2,1,0 fa cups and 1efl cup and one european final for Boro. Also you could replace West Ham with Huddersfield ( 3 times champions one fa cup). Finally I don't know why you put Shrewsbury in league one. Chesterfield, Crewe and Grimsby easily bigger. Bravo once again for the nice video. Cheers!

@@quevda It was ages ago , but Barrow were in the League before, but got voted out in 1972 or something, didn't they?. As for York, didn't they get screwed by their former owners which led to them going out of the EFL?

I reckon the best indicator of the top 20 teams is the number of seasons they've played in Europe, as it takes into account league position and trophies won. So here is the list of the best 20 English clubs, certainly over the last 60 years or so, based on European qualification. I have not included Welsh teams qualifying for the Cup Winners Cup. 1. Liverpool (49) 2. Man Utd (47) 3. Arsenal (39) 4. Chelsea (32) 5. Tottenham (30) 6. Man City (24) 7. Leeds (18) 8. Aston Villa (17) 9. Everton (17) 10. Newcastle (17) 11. Ipswich Town (12) 12. Nottm Forest (11) 13. West Ham (11) 14. Southampton (9) 15. Wolves (8) 16. Leicester City (6) 17. Birmingham City (5) 18. West Brom (5) 19. Derby (4) 20. Sheff Wed (4) Apart from these Fulham have been in three times but no other club more than twice.

"Let's put Ipswich in the Prem" also "Let's put Boro in the Championship"... Also, Swansea spent a good while in the 4th division... and Bristol City most of the time in the 3rd Division, overall a lot of recency bias with a preference for some "I think" teams

Hi Matt, couldn’t agree more with us, I would love to put us in the Championship for club size and it feels like where we belong after all my time watching Argyle but, the reality is, there is 24 clubs bigger than us which does make us League One indeed. I do think however that we are the biggest club in the country to never reach the Premier League/top flight! Plymouth as a city is also the largest in the nation to never host Top Flight football and we’re the largest city south of London as well by population! Hopefully one day it’ll happen 👍🏻 Here’s mine in alphabetical order (I’m including clubs further down the divisions too after all I’ve seen in English Football over the years) PREMIER LEAGUE Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Ipswich, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Sunderland, Tottenham, West Brom, West Ham, Wolves CHAMPIONSHIP Birmingham, Blackburn, Bolton, Brighton, Bristol City, Burnley, Cardiff, Charlton, Coventry, Crystal Palace, Derby, Fulham, Huddersfield, Hull, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Norwich, Preston, QPR, Reading, Sheffield United, Stoke, Swansea, Watford LEAGUE ONE Barnsley, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Bradford, Brentford, Bristol Rovers, Carlisle, Doncaster, Gillingham, Lincoln, Luton, Notts County, Oldham, Oxford, Peterborough, Plymouth, Port Vale, Rotherham, Shrewsbury, Southend, Swindon, Wigan, Wimbledon, Wycombe LEAGUE TWO Burton, Bury, Cambridge, Cheltenham, Chesterfield, Colchester, Crewe, Exeter, Grimsby, Hartlepool, Leyton Orient, Mansfield, MK Dons, Newport, Northampton, Rochdale, Scunthorpe, Stockport, Torquay, Tranmere, Walsall, Wrexham, Yeovil, York NATIONAL LEAGUE Accrington Stanley, Aldershot, Barnet, Barrow, Boston, Bromley, Chester, Crawley, Dagenham & Redbridge, Darlington, Fleetwood, Forest Green, Halifax, Harrogate, Hereford, Kidderminster, Macclesfield, Maidstone, Morecambe, Rushden & Diamonds, Salford, Southport, Stevenage, Sutton

The only thing I really disagree on is York City non league (I am not an York City fan). York spent from 1929 to 2004 in the football league and then again from 2012 to 2016. I personally would but Burton out (no direspect but there only football league for 15 years and where never before that in the football league).
@ryanwade6019Ай бұрын
Also Halifax Town spent from 1921 - 1993 and then 1998 - 2002 in the football league. Agreed, definitely move Burton down and also Crawley
@dmuellner1997Ай бұрын
Yeah it depends. If you count FC Halifax Town and the 2008 dissolved Halifax Town A.F.C. as the same club (which I would) defiently. If you say it's a new club then not. But I would also count them as the same beacause it's definetly meant to be that way although it don't officially count as the same club.

Probably a fair assessment of my team Pompey. Historically, pre 1960 we were massive with two league titles and we also held the FA Cup from 1939 to 1945 during the war. Post 1960 we have been up and down a bit although we won the FA Cup again in 2008 and reached the final in 2010 so Championship is probably right

We may be a car crash in the top flight currently but this is one ranking system where as Evertonians we can genuinely feel justified in arguing we are the top dog. 1 of 12 founding members of the original league, played the most seasons and the most % of our time in the top flight (higher than anyone else), every season in the PL and 9 Titles, 5 FA Cups & a European Cup Winners Cup.

Saints are 11th in the all time EPL table and have spent most of the last 60 years in the top flight. Also been in Europe a number of times and have produced players such as Shearer and Bale, and have had Keegan and Shilton play for them in their primes. I know I’m bias but I just feel like that should be enough to place Southampton as a top flight club. Yes we haven’t won loads but we are almost always there and we have a big following, especially compared to everyone else on the south coast.
