An elongated brazier fashioned into a sword shape. Another thing. This sword has a different set of animations than the other swords. Other colossal swords dig into the ground when swung. The god slayer greatsword bounces off and generally swings faster.

Some lore: the ancient meteoric ore great Sword was an arrow tip used by giants fashioned into a Sword. Also i would guess the spiral on the fire knight's as well as the godslayer are used to channel fire.

Historically such meteorites were rare and are a go to in fiction including such famous shows as Avatar the Last Airbender where Sokka drags a meteorite to his swordsmanship teacher to make a sword of it.

the ancient meteoric greatsword is actually held the "correct" way as you guys pointed out, the deep curve on the bottom side (as displayed in the video) acts as a cutout for your shoulder in game. also, its unironically one of the best weapons on this list, nay, in the whole game!

So, a few tidbits here and there: The Troll Golden Sword isn't rusted, as the name implies it used to be fully gilded but the gold peeled away over time. The big crystal in the troll knight's sword is glintstone, which is used to cast magic weapon arts, so it does have practical utility. There are also a few weapons made entirely of glintstone so you could argue that it's just a better material than irl gems would be. I always tought that the watchdog greatsword was made of stone since it's used by golems, but the description doesn't really mention it and some parts do look bronze-ish so idk. The meteoric ore blade isn't actually a sword, it's a giant arrowhead that's being used like one. The ruins greasword is also an ancient ruin that was turned into a weapon, but to be fair it has been altered a lot more than the meteoric ore blade it seems like. It's also imbued with gravity magic which might make it lighter than it should be; this also applies to the Radahn swords, which are meant to be dual-wielded. The godslayer greatsword is more of a torch than a sword funnily enough, it's meant to house the flame of death and it's pretty important object lorewise. The fire knight greatsword is also a magical fire sword, so in-universe you could say that the double spiral shape is ideal to channel fire magic.

Fully agree. However, any kind of wrapping in the handle, would be a necessity to be wielded properly. Once your hands sweat, no matter how ovoid or blocky the handle is, your hands are gonna slip, so you need that wrapping.

The "Greatsword" is based on Gut's sword from the Golden Age arc back before he got Dragonslayer. You can tell because it has a similar cross-guard and fuller.

The Godslayer Greatsword is an absolute beauty! Easily my favorite weapon in the game. Its lore and magical abilities are also awesome. Would love to see more of these vids; but maybe with a second rating for whatever magic they have going for them. Also: I‘d recommend booting the weapons up in game to see how the character holds and swings them as well as getting a better look at the material, edge and handle.

I just want to say that most of these swords are essentially looted off of the corpses of thing you killed, and most of those things are 4-5 times larger than the player so it only looks large in the players hand where in reality they are more like regular great swords in the owners hands. Best examples are the swords that we stole off of trolls.

Blackrazor, Sword of Kas, Sword of Zariel, Flame Tongue, Holy Avenger, Vorpal Sword, Luck Blade, Sword of Sharpness, Balduran's Giantslayer and The Silver Sword (these last 2 from Baldur's Gate 3), etc. They have really cool designs and I would love to see you guys "*overanalysing*" them. The Godslayer Greatsword should perhaps be considered a great club, like, a huge metal club with a guard, which might be interesting to see how it could work realistically (Tyranth you can't see my face, but think i'm staring right at you) since it might work for crushing or denting armor/shields. Also if you want to put Lore as a factor you can say it can also work as a god-killing flamethrower that can hit things really hard.

Shad, bollock knife handles were often times round and you would put the side of your thumb on the ballock a for edge alignment. The rectangle edge on the troll sword could serve the same purpose

My choice of weapons when I played it. Because of course. Mostly ended up using the Ruins sword once I got it because the powerattack does a shockwave so you can attack at very long range. And the mirror tear summon can do it as well.

15:46 most of these large swords are made incorporating magic and use magical means to function. Particularly the watch dog's great sword, the troll knight's sword, Ruins great sword (made from magical and timeless ruins, so there is all kinds of funkiness going with that) Ancient meteoric great sword (methods are not entirely known, so I could be wrong here), the starscourge which (like the ruins great sword) has an affinity for gravity magic, then the final sword "Maleketh's black blade.

The Starscourge greatsword is another blade made out of meteoric ore, as they say the blade "came from the stars". Also the handle is actually hexagonal which would probably hurt quite a lot, but that is okay because it is also made out of pure gold which would deform in your hand and mold to the shape of your fingers. At least until it broke after the first time you swing it over your head. But also also Radhan is technically a god so he can basically do what he wants. And the meteoric ore blade is one of his arrows.

that aint made out of a meteor, youre thinking of the meteor katana you can find in caelid. Radahn's swords just have a gravity engraving on them. Oh & the meteor ugs is an artifact of... some civilization of elden ring's ancient history. The arrows radahn uses are deadass the cleanrot knight spears you see stuck into him too

@@mfspectacular To add to that the meteor ugs is basically just debris of the civilization. The Ancient Meteoric Ore Greatsword was an arrowhead that once was a part of the old gods' arsenal. Most likely either before the dragons OR not long after they were lord in a forgotten time. Remember history is written by the victor & in a land like Elden Ring The Golden Order could have removed records of such things or they were naturally lost to time.

I like the aesthetics of the Godslayer "club". In the real world the Fire Knight one would rank higher than all of them (apart from the zwei) just for the fact that you can lift it and maybe to a couple of hits before it breaks. I like the slim design despite the functionality.

About the greatsword, in one drawing when Guts is facing off Sperpico, Guts has toc change grip in order for Sperico's blade to hit his metal arm, so in that sencario I think Guts would have liked a cross guard. I forget the Mango chapter sorry but its a really interesting fight scene!

I like the small pommel, with something that heavy, you want to keep the thing is motion, you would want to grip the pommel and use as a point to help keep it moving. Also, another point for large swords, handles have to me thicker to compensate or that is a weak point and to a point it impractical unless the wielded has huge hands

Interesting video, as always guys. 👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎 Where/when would people say the trend for giant over the top blades started? For me, the first one I saw was in Final Fantasy 7 on the PS1, which was 1997. I know that you could say that Conan was probably shown in classic fantasy art with huge blades, but they look proportional to the giant dude he was, unlike the FFVII style.

A lot of times, in the design process, I believe they have to make the handles round in order to reduce the number of vertices(?), I am not sure about the term, but it has to do with the number of surfaces or something like that. A round face would have fewer of those surfaces, and thus make the design not as heavy graphics wise. Also, on the textures, often times, they have to make the items as one piece, so the textures tend to go over the entire thing, unless a custom texture for that item is made.

Reason why many of these have such short hilts is that most of these are actually ment to use with 1 hand. These are essentially short swords for Trolls, Watchdogs and gods.

Troll Greatsword has a small handle because it's meant as a one-handed sword for Trolls, Watchdog Greatsword is supposed to be made out of stone, Godslayer's Sword was originally used as a flamethrower/torch, the Ruins Greatsword and Starscourge Greatswords both have magical enchantments to reduce their weight. :P

the one minor thing i disagree with is tyranth on is the pommel, yes a function of the pommel is as counter ballence but another use is to stop the handle from slipping out of your hand when swinging the sword, and the more tired and sweaty or bloody your hand gets mid fight the more important having even a small pommel becomes.

I don’t really know what Maliketh’s blade is made of but the best guess is that it’s made of a material called Blackened Corpse Wax which the gargoyles that serve him, the Black Blade Kindred, and the weapons they wield, are heavily patched up with. Considering that this is Elden Ring I suspect the name ‘Corpse Wax’ isn’t just for show but it seems to have been a useful alternative since the Black Blade Kindred are much stronger than the usual gargoyles one can find in Leyndell. I look forward to more Elden Ring weapons. Personally I’m very fond of the Greatsword and Greatspear range. Mohgwyn Sacred Spear is my favourite to use, it looks amazing but I’m very well aware it’s impractical as hell.

I'm surprised you went that hard for royal greatsword, Shad, considering that it's the only one to have a proper space to rest your shoulder on, since to wield a titan sword in combat effectively, you need a lot of shoulder action. The pommel was great, the blade had a good profile, the handle was not round, it even had proper removal of excess material with the fuller. To me it was the most obvious choice to reign above the others with a 8/10 and possibly even a 9/10. If you watch your own video of practicing combat with the titan sword wooden prop, I'd recommend that you imagine yourself practicing those movements with all these designs, especially since I'm a big fan of the titan sword project. Love your content, Shad.

Funny enough, the Fire Knight's Greatsword has the best variant of the Colossal Sword moveset shared with the Godslayer Greatsword, with "light" swings that DON'T dig into the ground. Also, for some perspective on some of the designs, some are weapons wielded by enemies larger or even MUCH larger than the player, the 2 Troll Knight Swords for example, in their hands those are basically Bastard Swords.

In the game, the sword is engulfed in flame, and the flames go out much further than the tip of the sword, at least when using the weapon skill. Most of the damage it deals is the flame from it.

Malikeths black blade is my favorite of these more so because of what it's capable of doing in the game. Pretty sure the blade is a black metal that has corroded over time due to destined death running through the blade I would love to know what you think of the various armors in the game. There are quite a few I enjoy
