The reason why we recommend Torco is along the same lines as why synthetic ENGINE oils are recommended for their better performance. The issue with transmissions is that UNLIKE engines, they DO NOT have any filtration and are generally not cooled (automatics being the exception). While a typical D/B/H/K engine takes about 4 to 5 quarts of oil, their respective trans take no more than 2.5 or less. So unless you're adding a transmission cooler and/or increasing the capacity, using a quality fluid designed to handle the heat while on track is essential!

@@Jason56B if you're using a clutch type diff and you're on the track, it's best to use straight RTF and the Type F friction modifier. An alternative that we approve of is motul competition 75w140, also for track use. For street use, the Torco MTF plus friction modifier is fine.

From my experience working on cars, it really doesn't matter what fluid you use. As long as its clean and serviced for the conditions your using your car in. For racing I flush and change it way more often than in my street car. A lot of of what is said is marketing anyways.

Honda used to recommend 10w30. The manuals also said this. At some point I think in the late 90's regular engine oil no longer used zinc. Zinc is an important additive for transmission oil. Honda MTF more or less is just 10w30 with zinc.

Uhhh, is no one asking why people are running a GL-5/6 rated gear oil (Torco) in a factory, GL-4 rated, Synchromesh specified gearbox….? I don’t think ‘newer’ Honda gearboxes were ever made to be run on GL-5 fluids either, hence Honda/Acura still sticking to their OEM MTF/gear oil (more of a ~GL-3/4 rating). Torco RTF (“GL-6” rated) is an even MORE aggressive gear oil than Torco MTF, and supposedly, it has a different additive pack, compared to the ‘typical’ GL-5 rated gear oil/manual trans fluid. Idk, but I drove a (performance) shop’s car that supposedly “built” an older B-series 5MT and a newer J-series 6MT, and both were filled with GL-5 Torco. They did not take more than like 1-2k miles before feeling ultra notchy/“scratchy” while shifting, not to mention the 75w-90 weight being too thick for the gearbox, unless it was driven and beat on until the fluid was overly warm or hot enough. They even tried Torco RTF (GL-6) after that, and it was even incredibly WORSE!!
@forbiddenera
@forbiddenera 4 жыл бұрын
1. Honda fluid has changed a few times over the years. Originally you would use engine oil in them. 2. Some MTF is too thick for Hondas. 3. Torco Racing MTF is best option for high rpm shifts.

@forbiddenera
@forbiddenera 4 жыл бұрын
Gear oil can be bad but motor oil is rated differently than gear oil. "API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For example, many modern gearboxes use a 75W90 gear oil, which is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil"

Just put an itr 4.7 fd trans on my B16. I put Honda mtf in it, disclaimer it was rebuilt so it’s practically all new even the hardware. Even though torco is better I just look at it from price. Pay more hopefully replace it less or pay less and replace it more. I’d rather replace it more just to see how it looks. I personally also don’t short shift my transmission to all hell on track. Temperature is obviously the main concern but I haven’t had an issue yet on regular Honda mtf so. Both options are good just pick your poison!

Torco told me at the end of this year they're releasing a Honda specific mix which is along the lines of 50/50 MTF and RTF. I'm about to do the same thing and do a 70MTF/30RTF mix in my R and see how she feels. No question Torco makes amazing fluids. Besides OEM, Torco, Amsoil Synchromesh and Motul are about all you hear anyone using. I've heard great things about the Motul Gear 300 as well. But I do know it's definitely thicker than OEM so in super cold climates it can be super notchy before the box warms up which always takes much longer than the engine.

I owned a Honda Civic for 6 years, and the first thing I do with the transmision fluid was a change, the manual said you can use MTF Honda.... OR full syntetic motor oil, I used full syntetic motor oil for 200.000 Km (124K miles) and I sold the car whit no issues on the gear box, engine or any other part. That was my "A to B" car, races are another thing but if someone have an honda to go from A to B in a reliable way, full sntetic oil or Honda MTF fluid are good
