Unless you start directly in another zone, there is little to no reason to go to get other woods: you barely can hold your starting zone with what little you have. Also, the problem was never "waiting" for the lategame empires, the problem was the lategame empires ( and really, even just middle game empire ) coming at you EN-MASSE. The AI focuses you like crazy, and Wood Elves always had to turtle to survive the never-ending onslaught of Empire-Dawi-Bretonnia if you didn't stomped one of them fast. And as of now, WE have just being nerfed to the ground on beastmen levels.

I really really like that there can now be a much greater presence of the Wood elves on the world map and not just around Bretonian lands. Also changes to the map are always one of my favourite parts of the updates, because it affects gameplay for all factions and fills up empty space on the map.

@@Nicke0528 Sometimes they randomly go ultra expansionist on some campaigns, like in my latest Chaos campaign, they had outposts in the empire, in the starting Karaz-a-Karak province, in the Border Princes territory... They still had over 20 provinces and were 5th best military after I burned Athel Loren to the ground. Just weird.

@@FireTalon24 Razing will give you a boost in income(not as much as before, but about twice as much as if you occupy and about 30% better compared to sacking), as well as an instant burst of healing to the forest in the area, but no healing over time like you do when you occupy. As such it can be a good option if you dont think you can hold onto the area. But as Siven said, if you dont want to make an enemy of everyone, you can ally with factions that hold the Heathlands and get the same healing effect as if you occupied it yourself.

If you have two factions around the forest, one strong and one week, attack the weak one and raze their settelment so the strong one can take it; then alley with the strong one. That will save you the trouble of defending the settelments since they can make walls and you can't (for example, destroy palavon and have the fey enchantress take their settlement).

Tree spirits get aspects, which have positives and negatives, like oak which makes them slower but tankier. A poison focused one can be unlocked through tech. Haven't seen anything about the system being specific to Durthu though.

The DLC and the WE rework got introduced: Oh god this is so great, they are finally the defensive faction we wanted, the Amber economy is gone, we can have more varied rosters, and we finally got a unique mechanic! LegendofTotalWar makes a video on it: This is shit, they nerfed the WE because the cheese tactics required for Legendary difficulty no longer work, and painting half the world with their outposts no longer gives you insane damage boosts and economy, they are ruined, worse than the beastmen! Sometimes I wonder if the people playing on Legendary difficulty are a different species from the rest of us...

Legend didn't outright say the WE DLC and WE update are shit. He actually said: This is going to be a culture shock for people who play on very hard or legendary difficulty due to public order changes and upkeep, because the WE don't make as much money anymore and they can't obtain cumulative global buffs to their army. In other words, the new update makes Legendary and VH WE campaigns harder, and Legend was just giving a heads up about it. I think he actually likes the thematic changes, especially since the focus is on a shorter campaign rather than a slog against a late-game blob.

I realy fell like they are testing new mechanics for the beastmen. Maybe Beastmen will have a similar thing's with heard stone replacing forests. You would have to capture people to sacrifice back the the heardstone. Different people might be controling the stone (like empire for exemple). Also beastmen could have a echanic similar to the under empire but as if their hidden colonies where more like hidden camp in the region, giving movement bonus, sacking bonus (without razing), raiding bonus depending on the building you build. That goes well with a horde as you can travel the world without worying too much about you hidden settlement

You kinda forgot to say it well, but a heartland is considered pacified also if it's in ruins or controlled by a military ally, while it actually damages Forest Health if it's controlled by an enemy faction. Since outposts have been nerfed, it could be a strategy to ally with some factions and have it control the surrounding lands as you only care about the forest territory.

One cool part of this mechanic is that it looks like you can actually grow the forest without having to own all the settlements around it, as long as you aren't currently at war. So if you want you could play diplomatically and ally with the surrounding regions, or go full Wild Hunt and create buffer zones. It really seems like they accommodate different playstyles well, which of course was the biggest flaw of the earlier WE campaign.

I just jumped to Laurelorn Forest and did the scriptet invader mission against the Norsca, it counts as a won battle against them and you get the settlement. It´s mostly the same with the other goals where you have to win fights against Dwarfs, Bretonia etc. It´s a good way to get around a declaration of war.

I LOVE this campaign. Diplomacy matters more, you use more of the map, meaning you fight a large variety of enemies, and there are multiple builds and strategies. Btw you definitely need to take multiple trees, the main tree's health caps at 100 intervals and you must perform rituals to lift the cap. Problem is you can only perform 1 ritual per tree. I dont remember exactly, but i think you need to do 3 or 4 rituals to unlock the final one at the main tree.

@Berserking Bishop I think you underestimate the ability to be able to instantly mass multiple armies from 1 end of the map to the other. Having it be faction wide cooldown makes sense, or the campaign would be way too easy. That being said, you can gain various research and effects that reduces the cooldown. So it definately becomes stronger as you progress your campaign.

@Berserking Bishop What you are missing out is that you are now comparing individual armies(and not the faction as a whole) with campaign abilities. And several of those you mention are not available at turn 1 or have their own cooldown and restrictions. Wood Elves armies can also crush enemies with ease due to insane ranged damage and near unkillable frontline. And now you can get both very easily(before you had to pay an Amber toll). Being able to teleport armies across the world to strike or defend at your leisure is very powerful(just imagine a head-to-head scenario against another player), as it allows you to either strike weak/exposed enemies or interrupt strong ones. Empire or Dawi needs assistance to handle the Greenskins/Vampires? Puff, and you have a powerful army that can start to wreck the place. If you dont know how to handle Greenskin armies(lightning strike), then that is on you. Due to the Teleport, the new Wood Elves will be ideal to counter any force that starts to grow too big, as well as easily gaining the favour of potential allies, by almost always being within reach of their enemies. If the Greenskins start to steamroll, you can easily divert a few armies to their territory and cull them to a more managable size. Once done, you can move those armies to a different part of the map in just a few turns and do the same there. And that is just the surface level of potential. Said in another way, they now have the means to be an anti-snowball faction, cutting down enemy factions that grow too big, or can assist allies in snowballing faster. And they can do so at an unprecedented scale.

5:18 you don't need to draw out their army, just go to the encounter spot to the left of it, there you can fight an army that spawns or just pay them 5000 gold to confederate.

When I play as the Sisters of Twilight, I always take Gaean Vale first. Averlorn faction is relatively weak during early game and you can easily take their entire province, including the tree and the fortress gate, which will all contribute to the forest growth. When maxed, the Gaean Vale tree gives you Chaos attrition immunity so you can go north and farm/bully the Norsca for easy experience.

Do I unsterstand it correctly that you have a forest ('province') & another 'province' somewhere else on the map? So basically, instead of having one land, your land is divided into multiple pieces that are all surrounded by AI? Doesn't this make it a lot harder to defend your empire?

Much better. Fits the usual AI you see where WE go full crusade on the world. Instead of being a defensive faction you have reason to go ham on everyone. I still think the campaign mechanic is a little lacking. You only need to make war on 3-4 factions top. The rest you can ally with or confederate with.

You can easily win without any distant forest. Just capture all settlements in the central forest, capture neighbour provinces to boost grow of tree and it's very easy win on very hard or legendary.

I feel like this is the important feature that the Wood Elves always needed. Their campaign always played like a "Sit and Wait" adventure where there were no practical need/reason to expand your borders and go to war with anyone other than immediate threats. While playing as other factions you'd just instead see the Wood Elves passively sitting around in their forest doing...nothing. You could practically just pretend they didn't even exist.

Grean Vale does look pretty awkward to take, as you'd be declaring war on whichever High Elf faction owns it and pissing off at least half of Ulthwan. But, the sacred pools actually looks like the worst to take. You're 360 surrounded by Lizardmen who aren't a pushover faction, though I do feel Wood Elves have good matchups for their lack of speed and range. The trouble is two of the Heath-land settlements are literally faction capitals for two Lizardmen LL's; and trying to Military ally with either will be hard as LZM are particularly finicky with diplomacy. Also, is there any new explanation as to how there is a Lizardmen faction fighting the border princes in the early-mid game in the footage shown? That's super random.

Yeah, I'd probably skip Gaean Vale, no interest in raising the ire of lategame Tyrion. One good thing with Sacred Pools is you could just fight Skaven to build relations with Lizardmen. Never had a problem with Teclis in mortal empires diplomatically playing nice with lizardmen.

Nakai starts in Albion in ME, in turn 53 it makes sense for him to be out of the empire. The biggest surprise is that he's still even alive at that point

Played 100 + hours of this game. and only when he said "it has a 9 garrison" did i realise you can see the garrison size by that number on the map. not the long way i was doing it every time. 🤦♂️. You never stop learning and seeing new things in this game whether its the campaign or battle.

I got a notification, not a mission, on my playthrough that chaos had attacked gaean vale. Sent a wee agent over to check it out and an army had spawned and blew it up. Just waited til it moved on and sent a big army over to colonise and defend the ruins, nice and easy. Trying not to kill the nearest high elves for being total douchebags not so easy :D

I got lucky with Gaen Vale. A chaos unit attacked and destroyed Gaen Vale and allarielle sent a mission asking for help so a quick defeat of the chaos unit and then colonise the ruin and I got it

Any one know why i cant take ruins as wood elfs? It states i need to settle my troops... No idea what that means. Normally i just walk there with my army and just take it. And yes, i'm in the right stance.

I think it should be per location tbh. Makes it easier to react to threats while also making it a tough choice how to distribute your forces.

Is taking heathland the only way to heal a forest? I like the idea of surrounding my far-flung settlements with loyal allies. Ideally, I would heal the forest without antagonizing those around it.

in Legend's video he briefly mouses over the heathlands symbol and its tooltip reads "attach it or raze it, or ally with its owners, and it will begin to provide benefits". So maybe there's less benefits for allying (though I don't think so) but at least there's some.

According to the announcement stream alliances work and so does razing the settlement. So for a heathland to help heal the forest you need one of 3 things: you own the settlement, an ally owns the settlement (I assume military ally) or the settlement is razed

I believe that you need only the original WE DLC to play Orion and Durthu (with the new mechanics), only the new DLC to play the sisters LL, and both to play a special LL added with the DLC (should be Drycha and/or Coeddil). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
