Impressive testing 😁 And interesting result. Granted, I haven't tried the Samaroli glass, but I've tried some of your lineup. The Glencairn is tried and tested, a perfect allrounder (although the Stolzle sounds like an interesting alternative). For me, I absolutely love the Blenders glass. I find it gives you a wonderful drinking experience. Perfect on the nose and you can seriously measure what you drink down to a single drop. I don't find the drinking/nosing aspect to be a problem; to be honest, the only glass that would allow me to do that (and no, my nose isn't that big...😉) would be a tumbler. What works for me, is just taking a sip and moving the glass back under your nose. That way, you can sniff again while the liquid coats your mouth. Anyway, again, wonderful video! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Damn that's a lot of glass! Interesting that you opted for pouring different measures to different glasses rather than doing them all at the same cl which was the way I opted to do. Very cool video Wade and nice to see there are some great glasses out there. That blender's glass is an absolute beauty. Peugeot makes a very similar glass to the Denver&Liely which has a metal stand that you can keep in the freezer to cool down your whisky which is pretty cool. Cheers mate for a brilliant video!

Thank you my brother 🙌 I did think about this for a while and I decided to go with pouring to the sweet spot that each glass is intended to be filled to to give it the best chance to perform how it was designed to. Actually saw using the same volume of pour as a disadvantage to the performance of some of them, hence my approach. Someone else mentioned the Peugeot to me as well! May need to track one down!

Hey Wade! Sorry I'm late on this one, but I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate this video. To my knowledge, it's the most in depth review of nosing and tasting glasses on KZbin. I found it incredibly useful. I'm going to try and track down the Stolzle glass. In my opinion, the Glencairn just can't be beat in terms of availability, price and what it offers to the overall experience. Great video again! Cheers!

This is hands down the best video available for comparing whisky glasses I could find. I very much enjoyed the setup and the variety of glasses included. I also agree with the conclusions. I am using Glencairn glasses, a version of the 1920s Blender's glass ("The Nose" from the German whisky sample seller "Simple Sample"), and a version of the Stölzle glass (the glass designed by/for the German whisky retailer and whisky KZbinr Horst Lüning). Inspired by this video, I looked for the Samaroli glass and found a German/Austrian webshop offering a set of six Samaroli glasses for 40€, which I think is a great deal. I can confirm that this is a fantastic whisky glass, probably the best for whisky enthusiasts' appreciation. Thank you so much for this video!

Neat. One thing that comes to mind, some of the larger glasses "encourage" a larger pour simply by design (by how wide the lower section is, and where the width is at maximum); I personally prefer glasses that encourage a smaller "portion" (shot glass aside).

Really good work👍 I haven't tried nearly so many different glasses, so it was really interesting too hear your point of view. I think the Glencairn is a really good, alround glass. I also have some glasses that has the shape of a Glencairn, but with a stem, also really good. But I must say that I was really surprised about your thoughts about the Norlan whisky glass, to me that's the glass I chose when I want that little extra. But that makes things interesting, different experiences from the same thing. One thing is true, different glass, different experiences....and that's quite fun🍷cheers

Thansk for this, after watching this I was lucky enough to find some Samaroli glasses on ebay in tbe UK. I've always used a Glencairn glass before and the Samaroli really is a lot better. For nosing you get less alcohol burn and when drinking, even before the Whisky hits tour lips you just get so much more of the aroma not juat in your nose bit also the back of your pallet. Really interesting how a glass can transform the drinking experience. Thanks Wade for this excellent video 😊

I have tried the glecairn glass and blender glass, both of them give me different perspectives of nosing and tasting notes (I'm drinking Glenfarclas 10 btw). With glencairn glass I can pick up more maltiness and honey note then a hint of sherry and dark fruit, on palate is a dominant sweetness, the maltiness is covering the dried fruit notes. With blender glass, on the nose I immediately pick up sweetness of dark fruit, then the maltiness was subdued to the background, and I can get a little bit of vanilla too, on palate with blender glass was a powerful spiciness, sweetness now comes softer, and the bitterness of the oak became clearer. It was an interesting experience to me to see the big difference of a whisky can be with different glasses.

Final test: durability! Push them all off the bench and see which survives 😂 Great video mate, I’ve been wanting to watch this one for a while but had to have the time to sit down and give it a proper viewing. Interesting you pointed out the Glencairn being a little problematic to hold. I think I’ve used it so much my thumb and index finger naturally clasp the base without heating the whisky. It’s probably the claw shape my hand will take when I die, ha ha. I’ve always been a Glencairn or Blenders Glass fan, depending on the whisky. You’re right about the disconnect of the nose and taste for the Blenders glass. Based on your experiment I think I need to try the Sameroli. Great work bud, very impartial review, even when some of the glasses were provided. Love a bit of whisky science.

Haha the durability test is not a bad idea, if I didn't care what happened to these glasses! Some of them you can already tell would survive, whilst others are almost certain to break if you are not gentle with them. Would love to know what you think if you end up grabbing one 😉 Looking forward to your next video Nath!

Well I was now able to pick up a new 6 set of the samaroli glasses for 40$ plus 5$ shipping. And they are good, but they are big, they have the same footprint as a white wine glass. Oh and they seem very geeky, but they are great for smelling and swirling.

Would the experiences be different if a more delicate good-quality whisky is tested? Would like to see it as a part two to this subject :D
@McIntyresMalts
@McIntyresMalts Жыл бұрын
Yes most likely it would change the experience, but I don't believe it would alter the outcome. I made the conscious decision to stick to a 40% ABV because it would have been too challenging to get through sipping 14 glasses of 46%+ and I chose Laphroaig because I am very familiar with it and it is highly aromatic. If I was to do a part 2 with a more 'integrity' whisky I would likely only do it with the top 8 glasses to make it possible to get through! Cheers 🥃

Yes that could be interesting to do, it may change the outcome, but my initial instinct is that it wouldn’t materially change the outcome. In this instance it’s all the same whisky in each glass and visually seeing the glass doesn’t give me any preconceived notion of what to expect. What I gave you was my real time assessment of what I was smelling and only what each glass was revealing, but I definitely like your suggestion!

@ Yep, makes sense. I’ve been pretty seriously into single malts for about 6 years, but only got these glasses a couple months ago. I like the stem. Also like the wider bowl for a wider whisky surface area and the narrower mount. This is perfect for nosing lower and mid ABV stuff, but with some cask strength whiskys you have to back up an inch or it will burn a bit.
