I have one of the earlier bottlings of the GlenAllachie 15 and it has a totally different profile to what you’re describing. It’s so heavily sherried that to an extent it’s almost all that you taste. Also, and this is the downfall, there’s an offputting bitterness and tannic notes that sort of rains on the finish. I’m so glad that you enjoyed this later bottling. It’s maybe a sign that Billy took the feedback to heart from the earlier bottlings and made changes. Love the content. Cheers from Canada

This solera 15 is one of the first I started with and although I have moved on to others in my whisky journey, I still find myself going back to this . There is a travel edition of this Glenfiddich 15 at 50.2% abv. ( Vat 03) Hope you can do a side by side review. There is a distillery edition at 51% abv but I hear it's discontinued.

I bought the Distinction Quercas Alba off Amazon for around $100 a few months back and also the little Tamdhu taster packs you had. Have to say I'm loving the 12. Yet to crack the cast strength waiting to sample it with a fellow Whisky lover. Have you tried the Alba? If so, as your pallette is more refined then mine as I'm still in training 🙂, whats the differences do you think there are between the American oak and European ?
@McIntyresMalts
@McIntyresMalts Күн бұрын
I have tried the Quercus Alba, I didn't like it as much as the standard range. It was a little too youthful and brash and not yet settled unfortunately. Typically American Oak brings sweeter vanilla and coconut notes from the vanillin in the wood, compared to European Oak which adds more spice. Unfortunately the Distinction IMO is bottled too young and doesn't reveal what you would expect from an American Oak maturation.
@johnbinstead8544
@johnbinstead8544 20 сағат бұрын
@@McIntyresMalts Yea good observations, I read about american oak bringing those flavors, while I could taste a hint of coconut, vanilla alluded me. I too like the 12 year old better. Brash is a great descriptor for it compared to the 12. Saying that I still like the Distinction but didn't love it as much as I thought i would. Any other American oaked sherry whiskies you recommend?

I do love both these whiskies. I’ve recently finished an older bottle of Dronach 15 which stated UCF. Deee licious! Tamdhu 15 was my lightbulb moment in falling for whisky. ❤ I now work in the industry for IMD and couldn’t be happier. In conclusion, I’ve got to go for Tamdhu but it’s a serious contest between these two.

@McIntyresMalts 7 күн бұрын
I thought the 12 had more detail in terms of separation between detectable notes on the nose. The 15 is more demure and well rounded than the 12 but I feel that it lost a little bit of what the more youthful 12 offers up. I have a bottle of the 18 and I’m very excited to open it and see what it offers. I was hoping to compare it in a versus against the 15, but my 15 bottle emptied faster than I expected 😅

What an interesting cask! I have heard of noble rot, especially in terms of Suaternes production so I suppose this cask used to hold Semillon grapes which were infected with the noble rot? Am I correct to assume it's a sweet wine cask essentially? Either way it's a cool day when you try something new, whether you like it or not. Cheers my friend 🥃

Surprised you haven't already come across it Wade. Botrytis casks peaks my interest everytime. I love the fruity sweet oilyness. Its mouthfeel is almost like a liqueur. Truly a dessert whisky ! I saw your Starward bottle on the AWA recently, but I settled on alternatives. I understand their initial sale was via ballott. Craftworks put out 'Juicy Lucy' - sold out recently & very quickly and I believe another batch is in the making. 'Noble Lane' from Amber Lane is another, is absolutely superb and has won numerous awards.

Any Sauternes cask you have had would probably be botrytis too. We aren’t allowed to call it that in Australia due to regional naming rights.

@jbar6284 10 күн бұрын
You're right, @JimmyMactvish, although I suppose Starward had the option to instead use an Australian regional name such as Riverina, etc.--depending on from where the grapes originated, of course. Perhaps they felt that was less of a selling point, or perhaps the grapes came from more than one region?

My friend, loads of great choices with a budget like that! I am going to assume you are talking Australian dollars here. If you like smoke and sweet sherry combo (like I do 😊) Then you can't go past a Kilchoman PX Cask, or the Laphroaig PX. If you want to avoid the peat you could try Bladnoch 19 Year Old PX Sherry Cask within your budget too. Australian whisky distillery Waubs Harbour also has a nice PX cask release at 51% ABV too if you are based here where I am. Or even the Redbreast PX edition in an Irish whiskey Then there are a lot of whiskies that also have a PX influence combined with Oloroso casks, but I have stuck to recommendation for PX casks only. Hope this helps 🥃

It's the level of tax in Australia that makes this the norm unfortunately. That and the fact they are still in essence 'craft' producers based on their actual size of production.
