Another great video Mark I love all three hinges you showed the trick with the robarts is to drill the hole then I use a tapered bur and open the hole just enough for the hinge to sit flush instead of notching it out then it's a very clean install . Cheers

Love the tip to drill a hole down for the first type of hinge, I usually cut a slot but a hole is quicker with less chance of cutting my finger tips off 😅

Great tips Mark, I must admit I prefer the pin hinges as well. 👍🏻

Very informative. When using CA hinges put a pin in the middle of the hinge when installing. This ensures that both sides are equally inserted and automatically creates the small gap you need for proper functioning. For small, light, planes I mostly use the covering as a hinge. For foam models you can create a UHU Por hinge and for vintage planes sometimes an old skool stitched hinge. Many possibilities 😀

I had a new ARF that the flat hinges (installed by manufacturer) separated on the elevators in flight. It was about four good times up and I loved the aircraft. Unfortunately it pulled a maneuver that I had never, and never since, been able to duplicate. Upon inspection there was possibly one drop of CA applied to every hinge. A little card enclosed with the kit suggested testing the control surfaces and applying additional glue if required. Unfortunately this was impossible because the slot was already sealed by the factory 😢. The round Robart hinges are used extensively in all of my giant scale planes and are definitely the way to go, the only bad thing is in competition use after a couple of years use it is common to cut them in half and drill them out and replace, they will eventually wear. This has never happened to me but I have known people who fly hundreds of flights yearly with the same aircraft and in that situation it is just good preventative maintenance between seasons. Your video hits the mark for proper installation nicely. One additional point that I have seen done is a common straight pin snipped at slightly less than the thickness of your balsa, and use the pointed piece to drill through the hinge and the shortened top inserted will stop movement as well. Little known facts about lesser known subjects 😅

I'll bet drilling out the hinges is fun 😊 still better than your model crashing to the ground.

Mark great Hinge demo, I like the Pin and CA hinges. I had just cut and test fitted my Pin Hinges on the clipped wing cub. Jeff in LA USA

Can you also show how to use Blenderm Tape to make a hinge (as per foam models) along with the film type of hinge please? Loved this vid, like all the rest!
