I really love this app. I have a few suggestions that could really take this app beyond incredible. I will try to describe. First off it would be amazing to have a mode where you start off by playing a slice of a sample completely unaffected like a ‘loop’ and then as you play with the controls the sample either gets shorter or longer and repeats based on parameters / grains you add. Then from there adding a tempo. In the note selection area if you had the ability to change how many times a note plays (dragging on a square to increase the number of times it plays). Then when all the squares add up to 4 or 8 or 16 you have “bars”. As it currently stands the order of notes selected dictates order but you can’t repeat that note in a sequence. Then if there was a way to apply different “waveforms” or shapes to the LFO section. For the original state there would be no waveform (linear playback). Those are the things right off the top. Anyways...congrats on this app. I wish I had a math brain. Completely envious. Cheers

Just bought Spacecraft a couple of weeks ago. Having a genuine blast with it. The lack of cluttersome menus makes it so easy to navigate around, so you have more time for experimenting and less time searching menus. Never used the other two but wow! Borderlands sounds fantastik! Thanks for the post!

Completely agree with your synopsis. I own both Borderlands and Spacecraft. I would say Borderlands did require a video tutorial before I got the hang of it. The SpaceCraft interface was really obvious on how to use it. What I do find interesting about both is how I cannot picture either of these tools without the touch interface. They really are two examples of moving the ipad beyond a mere content consumption device as it was originally envisioned into a content creation device, an instrument of its own. I would suggest the development of the touch interface will go down as a defining part of this era of music. Exciting to be here for the ride!
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m always looking for apps that uses the touch interface in interesting ways. Borderlands was one of the first apps that I found did it really good. I also have to mention TC-11 was another amazing one (the synth not the TC-Data midi controller).

Dude, I love your videos! You aren’t just talking about the subject... you’re injecting personality into them with a great sense of humor. I have two of the three apps and plan to buy Space Craft soon. Tardigrain hasn’t excited me much so far but it’s only because I haven’t taken the time to dig into it. It’s so easy to just open up, say, iWavestation, find a sound and play. Why take the time to learn a new granular synth? Well, because I’m missing on possibilities. I need to take the time to learn it. On the other hand, borderlands is a lot of fun. I’ve opened it up and played with it and gotten some really cool sounds. Unfortunately I haven’t used them. I get these cool sounds and it goes nowhere. It’s kind of become a fun sound toy for me. But it’s so cool that eventually something will inspire me enough to use it. I was considering doing some cinematic type of music and these are perfect for that. They create such intense moods. I’ve watched your videos on all of these and they’re very good. I just need to take the time to sit down with these apps and focus.
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
I feel you! The reason that I sit with synths for long periods of time is most likely because I love making my own sounds. That’s why iWavestation hasn’t interested me for instance. I love how different we all think when it comes to these things. There is no “right way” to do stuff just “the way that works best for me”. 💙

Jakob Haq The pleasure is mine. Your passion for the subject gets me excited about doing things I wouldn't do otherwise. My music is largely blues/rock and my chosen instruments are guitar and bass. Your videos expand my musical vocabulary for new kinds of expression. The three music videos on my channel are entirely done on an iPad. Two of them started as Gadget projects. My ability to do them at all on an iPad is directly the result of The Soundtest Room and haQ attaQ videos. I knew nothing about recording before starting on an iPad. Now I'm doing whole songs.

Excellent video, Jakob! I really appreciate these types of comparisons. There are so many classes of synth apps with similarities and differences, it really helps to have someone walk through them like this. Of these granulars, I really don't have a preference. As you say, SpaceCraft is VERY easy to get into and start making sounds and it is certainly attractively priced! Borderlands has some great and very unique features, but the controls can be quite cumbersome when you have more than about 3 nodes working. I haven't done enough with Tardigrain, but I do like that it is more of a combination instrument/granulator. I find the Tardigrain UI reminds me of Samplr which can be rather cryptic at first, but the help overlays are quite, uh, helpful. Many thanks for this!

Just discovered an undocumented (and VERY cool) feature in SpaceCraft. If you load it in ApeMatrix, you can use the built-in modulation controls (LFO's, accelerometers, MIDI controllers) to automate any of the X-Y parameters for both of the sample granulators! I haven't been able to do this in AUM, Cubasis or Audiobus, but it is pretty slick in ApeMatrix. Jakob - if you're still monitoring these comments, perhaps you could amend your video (or make a new one) showing off this nice feature. Edit: You CAN assign MIDI controllers to the various X-Y parameters in AUM, but so far I haven't found a way to do this in Cubasis or AB.

@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
Like Juno? I get confused at times. Samplr isn’t on this list for a few reasons. For one it’s not a targeting a Granular synthesizer market in its design, it’s very much more a sampler with a Granular function in it. The other reason is simply because Samplr isn’t one of my favourites. For me it’s the interface. It also needs updates because it’s unstable for me. There’s a lot of us that has been hoping that Samplr would get an update but it’s been three years now. We can keep hoping though! I thought that Borderlands Granular was abandoned too until I saw the Dev posting back in May over at the Borderlands Granular instagram. 👍🏼

I have a strange question. What is a grain? Is it just a note? In borderlands, I think the dots pick out a very short piece of a recorded piece of music, so it’s not really notes. Do you see what I am getting at? It looks like granular does not have a strict definition at all. I don’t really care because I only want fun sounds, as opposed to definitions, but I am a curious person. Have fun either way.
@bryanbaker65796 жыл бұрын
Here's a nice explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKWnfYWPo7eMkLM
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
Perry, you’re contradicting yourself here which is a bit frustrating for me. I can answer your question but I don’t want to waste time if you don’t care in the end. . Granular synthesis is a very much defined type of synthesis used by scientists in labs and developers of musical gear and hardware. Google it and you’ll find resources about its definition and usage. . But we’re talking musical application for it. Ok so here’s the basics. Granular synthesis is basically based on sampling. But samples are not played back in an conventional way. They are basically split into tiny pieces of around 1 to 60 or so milliseconds, in other words “grains”. . These grains can be then be layered on top of each other at various frequencies, volumes etc. . Playing these grains at high speeds will result in notes. Playing these grains at low speeds will result in something more a kin to a soundscape-esque type sound. . Like you’ve noticed, when using Borderlands Granular if you put a node over a clean guitar note sample. Then open up the note and tweak the grain duration to the full, tweak the overlap to the full and minimise voices to a low number (even 1). With these settings, move the node over the guitar note sample and you’ll hear how the node is clearly sampling from it. Then while your listening tweak the duration down and you’ll hear less of a guitar tone and more grainy sound. . Ow there is so many ways of doing Granular synthesis/Granular sampling (which it is) and there’s not one simple answer for this. I have just explained the basics above and every developer uses the synthesis method in different ways. . You’ll basically have to research various Granular Synth in order to grasp how each one does it. There’s a reason why they all sound different and it might be due to the maximum duration length of grains to to just tweaking the speed of the grain playback etc. . In other words, Granular synthesis is the definition. It’s basically a synthesis method based on sampling. . Sorry for any spelling mistakes that might have popped up.
@perrypelican94766 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. When I said I don’t really care, I meant that I don’t have any judgement on what it is, as long as I can create cool sounds with it. I had a crazy heated discussion with a guy who said that a real musician doesn’t use other people’s samples. I couldn’t believe he judged people who don’t make their own stuff from scratch. I don’t care how someone creates sounds if they enjoy it or it sounds good to me. I Care a lot .about your explanation. It’s different caring. I hope I cleared it up. Thanks for that. Now I know

But not as a granular app. I ask because I have not been very successful with choppin' and screwin' samples. I just get a mess. Idk if dat is where I need to focus on with my craft. I feel I am wasting my time. Doin' my best to manipulate a sample a few ways than just str8 play. I do this couple times. Wanna find interest in using a sample many more ways. But..... U know to get the value of what I bought the sample or download the sample. Please hint a questionnaire survey to your subscribers what would they like to know about such I am sure I am not the only 1. Peace!!

AHHHH!?! JAKOB I BOUGHT ALL OF THESE APPS AND ITS ALL YOUR FAULT THAT I DON'T LIKE THEM!!! ... HAHAHAH!!! ... JUSs KIDn'!?! Actually, I LOVE THEM!! Although i haven't purchased Borderlands Granular yet, it seems very similar to Spacecraft just not as pleasing to the eye. Personally, being more into the performance oriented aspects, my #1 vote goes to TARDIGRAIN!!! Honestly, I think it's my most used iOS application. I absolutely love its unique UI, the endlessly unpredictable sonic capabilities, & truly admire it's modulation assignments. I could go on forever and a day about my newest addiction consisting of heavy doses of tardigrain, and how I believe it to be uncomparable to ANY other app really. I have only messed around with Spacecraft for only a few hours since it's release, and sadly, I anticipated a little more. I think the interface is very enticing, but I wish I could venture a little deeper as it feels/sounds so very limited. Therefore, instead of considering it like an instrument, it comes off more like a toy for children when no matter what sample is loaded I generally get the same outcome every time, HINTs THE NAME "SPACECRAFT"... I'm hoping for a surprising update that maybe allows more producing or performing friendly aspects.. Again, thanks for yet another great comparison video, AS ALWAYS!?! Looking forward to the next...

hahahh thats pretty funny, i didnt purposely intend to do that... Are you excited for QUANTRA by Audio Damage???? I cant wait to see what the iOS version is like, and also in comparison to these 3 great apps... I wish i knew when we all could expect it. The desktop version is really nice looking, similar to NI Form.

Hello Can you try to recommend my which iPad should i buy? I want use it only for music. First of all to reading music sheets etc. and second of all as an additional equimpent for my live setup. I don't want to produce the whole music in my iPad. I prefer macbook, ableton and some vst/hardware stuff but i want to use it as an additiaonal instrument for my live setup. I watched a lot of ipad music videos on youtube and to be honest apss that im really interested is Tardigrain, Samplr, Borderlands, Noise (by Roli) and Lemur. Don't know how much cpu this apps will take. As i said before i don't want to use it as an whoel groovbox/mixer/DAW machine. What do you think? iPad 8th generation 2020 will be ok? Don't want to buy the newest ones and the most expensive because i prefer to spend money on some other musical stuff

Doesn’t Spacecraft have a keyboard spanning a few octaves?
@jb28686 жыл бұрын
Keyboard/sequencer*
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
It’s a sequencer with four rows of seven-note scales across 4 octaves. It does not operate like a keyboard. 👍🏼

I have all these... but i still like Apesoft iPulsaret best! It covers all the things you’ve mentioned in the video. Its very musical but can become spooky and “artsy” with its many detailed modulation aspects. I guess its good to have options ;)
@JakobHaq6 жыл бұрын
I have the iPulsaret, Stria and a few other ones. I don’t know exactly what it was that turned me away from them since they’re really since apps. Might have been the interface. Maybe I’ll have to revisit them for another video. Btw do you remember Earhoof? That’s another one with a really unique GUI.

Jakob Haq i remember reading about Earhoof, but it just seemed odd and i haven’t heard more... hmmm... i guess we both have some digging to do **hehehe**

@@JakobHaq what is the best app to do evolving drone ?
@JakobHaq3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know what would be “best” for you. However I love using Borderlands Granular because of how you can layer sounds, record movements of the sounds and also nodes. Makes it very interesting for making drones that keep changing.
