SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD

Exactly, the Sandisk extreme ssd. But maybe I have suggestion for some future videos - something about storing things at home (files, video, photos). In household with multiple different devices - PCs, Ipads and etc. How to handle in such conditions data storage, data sharing among those devices, backuping and etc. Love to see some tips and new inspiration :-)

Martin Surovy weirdly I was noting down some thoughts for a video on this exact topic just this morning. I've been running a Synology DiskStation for the last six months and I'm pretty happy with it. I've also been playing with using a Raspberry Pi to share a drive across Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. I'll put together a full video on this soon.

@ Tech Craft, nice vid on Gnarbox 2.0 and just subbed! All vids on this seem to all come out same time and have a pros and no cons so appreciate the candid and honest review. Refreshing! Done some homework myself and as you mentioned, these are tools and more about: 1) use case(s); and 2) what you can afford and/or willing to spend. Here’s my 2 cents: 1) Money no issue, pros and/or prosumers and doing professional and paid work, need on spot real time backup, good file management: get the Gnarbox 2.0. You can go for the low end 256GB and then use cheap 2.5” external ssd drives, but to get fast speeds, you need the usbc 3.1 gen2 adapter 2) Alternative to Option #1 for same use case but bigger form factor and not as good file management (try Documents app by Readdle but not at level of Gnarbox 2.0), then try out Nexto Di NPS-10. It cost abt $390 on B&H, Adorama, and Ebay but you need to add a 2.5” internal ssd drive like Samsung’s 860evo/qvo, etc. That adds up to abt $500++ but more storage capacity and flexibility and it has 2 x SD slots + 1 x MicroSD + 1 x CF (type1) or 1 x CFast2.0 or 1 x XQD/CFexpress. Has lcd screen for preview and can do sequential copy. It also can take on video preview formats (got this off their website): XAVC 4K, XAVC 2K, AVC Ultra 4K, AVC Ultra 2K, XF-AVC 4K, XF-AVC 2K, H.264 (.mov), AVCHD 2K, PRORES 4K, PRORES 2K, DNxHD 2K, MPEG 444/422/420, DVCPRO HD Photo preview formats: JPEG, TIFF(*), ARW, CR2, CR3(*), DNG, NEF, ORF, PEF, RAF, RWL, RW2, SRW (* : Will be supported later by free firmware upgrade) But if you need ruggedness for outdoor, go for Gnarbox 2.0 3) For regular enthusiasts and normal sequential read/write needs and you don’t want to bring laptop just to backup or do quick viewing and/or edits, go with Rav file hub version 009 which has the microusb. It is small, compact, and only $50-$60 and will do the job. Just a bit slow for me but has it’s own wifi, some basic file management but use Documents Readdle if you need more. 4) All the options you mentioned in this video stands! 5) check out on Kickstarter: - Warpdrive, just finished yesterday - Hyperdisk - Signature Pro Another note: Saw you list of accessories for iPad Pro, check out: - Libra, copy of Brydge keyboard but with a touchpad. They are working around design so no patent infringement. On kickstarter for another 11hrs Sorry for long msg. Cheers!

Good review! As a videographer shooting a lot of Canon 5D Mark IV video, there is a very useful feature of the Gnarbox 2 that I believe you missed. The Gnarbox is recognized immediately by LumaFusion on the iPad and by previewing your clips and setting in and out points only the desired footage is imported into storage on the iPad. This presents a significant advantage to the Gnarbox 2 as iPad storage is often limited. I was also pleased that the Gnarbox 2 plays back the M-JPEG footage without any transcoding.

I do like being able to work from a drive directly in LF, but it doesn't seem like that's exclusive to the GNARBOX. I'm able to do the same thing from my Samsung T5 and WD My Passport Pro.

I’ve been using the WD Wireless Passport Pro for memory card backups while traveling and LumaFusion editing with iPhone since around 2016. More recently I use it for LumaFusion editing with the iPad Pro. The WiFi connectivity of the WD to iPhone was always unreliable, but the USB connection to the iPad Pro has been great. What I love most about the WD is that it allows me to take backups of my memory cards while traveling without having to lug around a laptop. It’s small enough that you can take it on multi-day hikes without the weight and size becoming a burden.

Hi Rob, Firstly love your channel. I have watched this video with interest and the only slight criticism I have is the review on Gnarbox. I am not sure if this is because a lot of facilities it offered were not available when you did the video. Let men say like you I bought mine and am at this moment putting it through it’s paces on a filming trip in India. I do not have any affiliation to Gnarbox but am desperately trying to get them to add more features to make it even better for filmmakers like myself. Now I agree it is very expensive but unlike the SSD’s it is also has a computer built in and therefore I like it because it will not only as a stand alone unit back up to the internal drive but also up to two external drives into folders. This makes it probably unique as you do not need a computer or iPad once set up to make three backups while on the move. Also as a photographer you can do your metadata for your files ( I am pushing them to add this feature by possible joining forces with KYNO for video) using just an iPad and the Gnarbox. Finally it has been designed to work perfectly with LumaFusion for editing and when in the USB mode can be seen by iMovie which means that you could assemble in iMovie then export an XML file from it for importing into Final Cut Pro later. Bearing this in mind would you consider looking once again at the Gnarbox and maybe do a short video on it? All the best Dave - Dave Knowles Filmmaker.

I watched this video again the other day thought I should probably spin up the latest firmware updates and see what has changed. I’m heading to California at the end of Feb: the perfect excuse to run up another video!
@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker4 жыл бұрын
Tech Craft Rob sounds great. My dealings with Gnarbox is they listen to ideas. I don’t know if you know KYNO which is only available for Mac (I am trying to persuade them to do an iPad version) is amazing. You can add metadata which FCP reads and you can transcribe to most formats to most formats. It is worth looking at if you have’t seen it. Anyway I am trying to get Gnarbox to join forces with KYNO and both sides seem interested. Apart from that there is a few things such as a battery base that takes NP1 batteries I have suggested and they are looking into it so if you have any reservations please let them know. All the best Dave. By the way I am loving using just my iPad Pro instead of the MacBook Air I normally use.

I really appreciate this video. I was torn between which portable storage device to use. I'm attempting to build a portable music studio using my iPad Pro. I'm thinking that the T5 will be my go to. Good speeds, good storage space, attractive compact appearance, it's going to be good.

I'm still using the T5s and they are still brilliant. I've considered the T7, but it's expensive o get the fingerprint reader that I don't think will be all that much use.

@@tech_craft I agree. A fingerprint sensor is cool and all but, that's really the heft of what you're paying for, aside from the actual storage device itsself. Re: format of t5. Working fine with iPad Pro. Synology reply The router is compatible with: EXT4, FAT, NTFS, HFS+ However, the router can only format it in the EXT4, and FAT32. For testing purposes, please format it as EXT4 using the router to see if this problem persists. Supposedly, the t5 comes formatted exfat. There’s hardly anything on it now so maybe I’ll try ext4 and see. But then I’d have to go to FAT. No iMac anymore, so I must rely on the router to format. I’d like to be able to use the t5 on iPhone 11 Pro, iPad Pro, and the router until I decide more permanent usage. Thanks, again...

Extremely thorough, well-done examination of these drives. My needs are somewhat similar to yours-even down to the use of the same iPad Pro, a couple BMPCC4Ks, and an ILC with RAW files that are unsupported in iOS. With this in mind, I'm curious about how you use the WD Passport Pro. It has some cool features but seems way too slow to use as a way to back up or process the huge files generated by the BMPCC4K or a large quantity of RAW files. I'm wondering if you're using it for something else. In a comment on a previous video, I argued that the Gnarbox 2.0 is a much better choice than the WD. I think you did a great job of nailing some of the annoyances that one has to deal with when using the device. There's just enough friction with the different modes and switching between wifi networks that using it can feel like a hassle. On the other hand: 1. The Gnarbox 2.0 is able to perform an automated back up to two drives at once employing MD5 checksums to ensure bit-for-bit accuracy at speeds that actually make it useful when dealing with large quantities of data (faster if you plug in a UHS-II card reader instead of the built-in UHS-I reader). This eliminates the need to even have a phone, much less an iPad, when performing backups. 2. Its Selects app is powered by Photo Mechanic so it is not dependent on waiting for Apple to get around to supporting new (or in some cases, pretty well-established) RAW formats in order to view certain RAW file types. 3. I can appreciate your desire to convert video files to MP4. That said, you questioned the usefulness of its current transcoding options. They can actually be quite useful if you don't employ an iPad-only workflow. Transcode to 720p to do rough edits in LumaFusion and then export the proxies and the metadata from these edits into Premiere to finish editing before returning to the full-res files for the final render. Of course, this assumes a scenario where you want to get the editing process going before you're back at your workstation. As far as the value proposition goes, I can't disagree. The cost of SSDs has dropped dramatically since the Gnarbox 2.0 Kickstarter campaign in April 2018. At that time, a 1TB Gnarbox with extra battery was available for $599 (early bird). A 1TB Samsung T5 was nearly $500. Unfortunately for Gnarbox, the production of the 2.0 was plagued with delays pushing delivery back nearly 10 months. Today, consumers are faced with a more difficult choice as the Gnarbox is now full price while the cost of a T5 has dropped significantly. The added value really has to be there for a particular use case to justify the extra cost. Every one of your videos that I've watched has been excellent. I can see why your subs are growing so rapidly. I look forward to future uploads.
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for such an insightful comment. I’m really only using the WD as a backup, so capacity is more important than speed to me in that particular use case. I can fill up 500GB with about 1hr of 6K footage from the BMPCC6K, so the GNARBOX barely lasts for me. At least with 4TB I can get a lot of shots down on to a disk. If the day arrives where the iPad can edit directly off disk, then the GNARBOX will all of a sudden become an amazing drive for editing out in the elements. Your insight into the pricing situation is super illuminating. Hopefully we’ll see higher capacity, lower priced versions in the future.

I really like the My Passport Pro- it a lot better than the regular externals I used before. Just be careful though, if there is much EMF around, the wireless function is not robust, and I have had its wireless function corrupt files, which I never knew happened until later when I was having editing problems. This happened a few times now, and I am trying to automate a checksum approach that I don’t have to think about, so it provides an automatic failsafe way to transfer video and photos. I don’t own a gnarbox, but I have seen it on shoots and I was told it does that automatically (but I do know it is about 3 times the speed of my wireless). I will probably get a gnarbox at some point, but I wish there was a good open source alternative or any good competitor, so it was cheaper, but it does seem to have a lot of computer power and automation built-in, so I guess you get what you pay for.

Hey Rob, great video’s I have just subscribed! I recently just switched to an iPad Pro from a laptop. I wonder if you could offer some advice? I sometimes will have to transfer larger files (Around 5gb) from a external drive (which I use all the time with the iPad) to a colleagues Windows machine. How would you recommend I do this/ what format should I format my external drive to so both Windows and IOS can read/write? Thank you in advance.
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
You can do this over the network by sharing a folder on the Windows machine and then accessing it from Files. For regular transfers you might find this is faster due to the lack of fiddling with drives. To do it from a drive I’d recommend exFAT as drive format. This is supported by pretty much everything these days and supports large file sizes.

Since watching 4K vid recorded on Wd 4T wireless studded. (Nikon z6’s video) Can I connect it directly to my iPad Pro ? Is there such cable?
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
Murphy Hui You can. I use two options. Either use the in-box USB 3.0 cable with a USB-C adapter or use a USB-C hub that has a USB-3.0 port. I have links to the products I use in the description.

Can you attach another USBC SSD to the Gnar to increase storage space?
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
You can. You don't see it as one drive, but you do get to access both drives from the app: support.gnarbox.com/hc/en-us/articles/360025397131-Using-External-Hard-Drives-with-GNARBOX-2-0-SSD

Seems like what the Gnarbox lacks in convenience and ease of use, it more than makes up for in poor value for money. 😏

But...are you reading my mind?? Just some hour ago I searched on Amazon a good SSD Thunderbolt3 for my iPad Pro :)

@@tech_craft I think I'll go for the T5 1Tb :) p.s. you're covering almost all my "pinned topics" for my iPad Pro :) Could you please treat the argument "usb-c power bank"? I'm looking for a real good power bank for my iPad Pro but I'm non confident with most of the products on the market today. I want to find a Power bank that does not "ruin" the battery of my iPad Pro :)
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
I can definitely do a video about power banks. My general advice though is to go with Anker products. I have a fair few and they are always reliable and well-priced.

I have the RAVPower File hub www.ravpower.com/products/rp-wd009-filehub, I havent used it much (I actually forgot that I threw it in one of my storage compartments on a trip 6 months ago and just remembered I had it). It works kind of like the the WD wireless, but you provide your own drive, its a wireless/so/hard drive/router. Kinda handy for me since I have used it to share my phone hotspot with my work laptop and a special device I need to get onto my work network when I was out and about and got a call.

Does this mean that a wd my passport hdd can be connected to my ipad air 2 without the need of any external power source?
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
Yes. The iPad and the WD can communicate over WiFi and the WD has its own internal battery. Provides that battery is charged you’ll be good to go.

Should I be able to set up and use the T5 solely using my iPad Pro 11? Also, what about connecting it to my Synology rt2600ac router? Thoughts?
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely set up and use the T5 solely from the iPad provided you don't need to format it with any particular file system. If you do want to change the filesystem, you'll need do that with a different machine. I don't have that router to test, but from looking at the specs the drive should work just fine.
@ricksovitzky22264 жыл бұрын
Got the new T5. iPadOS 13.3. Files sees the drive and the three installed files. All mention of iPad is sorely absent. I assume there is no firmware upgrades via iPad? No user interface? No eject in Files, so I powered down the iPad and got one red blink. So is that about it? Thanks...
@ricksovitzky22264 жыл бұрын
Just an update: the T5 does NOT work with the Synology ry2600ac router. Seems bizarre to me. It shows the drive in Storage section and got the capacity right, but says Partition is unsupported. Well, I’ll see what I can accomplish on the iPad Pro.
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
Rick Sovitzky there’s no eject for any drive I have, I think that’s because the iPad is flushing all buffers after every write so there is no need to signal that before removing the drive
@tech_craft4 жыл бұрын
Rick Sovitzky is the partition issue because of the drive format maybe?

The Samsung T5 and T7 do not work reliably with the iPad Pro.

I think I'll go for the T5 1Tb :)

A good choice. You might also consider getting two 500GB drives rather than a single 1TB. I did that and, unless you have truly huge files, I think it makes for an easier workflow of moving files about.
