This year I've switched to the iPad Pro for most of my video and photo editing while I'm on the road. LumaFusion and Lightroom Mobile have given my workflow an enormous amount of flexibility while traveling. One of the biggest challenges is getting files from my camera to the iPad - until now. The Gnarbox 2.0 is an incredibly versatile box that I think is quite essential to any mobile workflow.
You can get your Gnarbox 2.0 here www.shopmoment...

I’m a retired professional photography business 35 years. Awesome seeing all the new equipment ....I bought a Mac plus in 1988 and my business jumped into the digital age. Now I just got a 12.9 iPad...fantastic equipment. Back in the day using macs you understood the os system because that’s how you installed new software , manually and divided the system and deleted in its...which you did not need.

The Ravpower file hub has a sd card slot and you can plug in a portable drive. Its a one button press to transfer from SD to portable drive. It can be configured from a mobile phone. Its also a lot cheaper !

I've read a bunch of reviews on the Gnarbox 2.0 and most people rate it as an expensive external drive with an ad that shows someone sticking an SD card into a wet Gnarbox. I had no clue it can transcode into ProRes and I don't think many do. That is a gamechanger

Ted, thanks for another great video. I am a Master Cyber Security Architect, who has been in the IT industry for the past 34 years. In 1991, I started a Photography, and Cinematography business, and operated that Practice, for 12 years. Needless to say, at that time, businesses like mine were on the then cutting edge of the industry, and technology itself. In 1992, I had 20 SCSI drives, serially connected, with each having a whopping 200MB capacity. Those drives were connected to an Apple Macintosh II computer, then MII format decks, and when mated to the MII cameras, those modular cameras cost $17,000 each. This was then all connected to an AVID NLE, which by itself cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars - and you were editing video digitized from tape. GNARBOX v2 appears to be an outstanding solution to not only backup images and video, but indeed impacts a professional production | post-production workflow, in a very positive way. When I read the bulk of the comments left, I could only shake my head. Generations of people have no idea how storage technology has evolved; the costs of that evolution, nor how innovation impacts professional workflows. At the end of the day, I would ask any professional what value could be lost, if a day or week’s work was lost, without a sound backup strategy, and viable solution to implement that strategy - especially if that work was for a ‘real client’. I imagine that is what Errors and Omissions insurance is for, though insuring away Risk doesn’t do much good, for a persons brand. Again, thanks for another great video. Thanks to the folks who produced the GNARBOX solution. Be well.

I just use a hyperdrive hub and a samsung T5, and it has all of the connectivity and transfer speed that i'd ever want. Love that it directly reads micro and regular SD's (though not at the same time), and still has a free USB C port for a power passthrough (and using the USB A port for the SSD still results in plenty of speed). IpadOS with it's far more robust file management has done away with the need for expensive all-in-one workarounds like the WD wireless box. The gnarbox is probably handier for dumping SD's in the field where it's too rough to whip out the ipad, but i just bring multiple cards with me.

The trouble I and others are having with the iPad Pro is that it refuses to reliably copy large video files (>4.3 GB) without corruption the files and making them unable to play or edit. I’m using a Samsung T5 ssd with a 1tb iPad Pro and I simply can’t copy large files reliably to or from the ssd. I had to change the formatting of the ssd from exFAT to macOS journaled to eliminate ‘I/o’ errors, but I still can’t copy large video files for editing. How do you get around this with your gnarbox or other drives? Any help will be greatly appreciated, Here’s a thread about this problem on macrumors: forums.macrumors.com/threads/files-cant-deal-with-videos-4-5gb-on-external-storage.2201575/

If you plug the hub into an iPad Pro, can you transfer directly from the sd card to the SSD, or do you have to transfer to the iPad first? If so it’s a great solution for a quarter of the price of the gnarbox.
@GameCubits
@GameCubits 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can absolutely transfer files directly between external drives like SD to SSD! It's how i manage all of my photo and video files instead of storing them on the internal memory. I just pull up two files tab side by side, have one set to my SD and the other to the SSD and drag and drop bulk files. Easy peasy!

I still can’t copy video files larger than 4.3 GB onto my iPad from my Sony camera. I need to use my laptop to offload the files from the SD card, and from the laptop transfer the video onto the iPad. iPadOS just isn’t ready for pro editing.

How are you liking it? I've been editing on my phone the last 6 years and am trying to decide between a MacBook air and an ipad Pro + Gnarbox. I saw one video by Benji Haisch that was a bit discouraging against the iPad. Basically said it's great if you're editing 15-20 photos. Not so great and very time consuming if editing say 400 photos from an event.

Unfortunately Gnarbox missed the boat. They were very late in starting delivery which slipped from November to August. By that time Apple had released iPadOS 13 with the new folders app which allows connected cards/drives etc drag and drop to the ipad. So using sometime like the 6in 1 Hyperdrive connection allows you to connect your cards, ssd drives etc all at the same time so you can drag and drop files between them and onto the ipad as you wish. That is the solution that works for me, my ssd drives hold my back-up while the sd card hold the original data that i drag into Luma Fusion for editing. Works like a dream and is much cheaper than Gnarbox 2.0, with the ability to swap out drives as you wish.

This is an excellent review of the Gnarbox 2. Within the last week the Gnarbox Team have released software and firmware upgrades to the Gnarbox 2 that have added several significant new features. Most notable is the Gnarbox 2 can now easily connect to my QNAP NAS system where I store all my images and video. This saves the step of transferring files from the Gnarbox to a computer and from the computer to the NAS. Those complaining about the cost of the Gnarbox 2 fail to take into account that the Gnarbox 2 uses extremely fast NVME flash storage, has an Intel quad core processor and Intel GPU, and a very fast wireless modem. With the Gnarbox 2 you get what you pay for and I love my Gnarbox 2.

Nice product and great review. Convenience costs money. For those on the cheap, I'm fairly sure (with a bit of legwork) you can configure a raspberry pi to do the same thing pretty much (transcoding and data/disk management and filesharing). You can also then just use a bunch of USB3 SSD's interchangeably. The pi can also just power itself off the ipad with USB-C. It's also far far cheaper and modular, so it can actually do more. An iPad Pro + Raspberry pi is getting to be a pretty damn useful setup.

Excited to see more about your mobile set up. I have been using Lightroom Classic, and Final Cut. I seem to need some new solutions even though I still prefer doing my editing work from the studio computer. Most of all, I need to be able to get some quick stuff out and edit while traveling... even if final editing is still done when I get to the studio. The gnarbox is a big step up as a part of the solution, but how it all connects as a chain from camera to final edit export is still a maddening process.

I've been using the DJI/Lacie Copilot since you're last video, and to be honest I've not even watched another review on the new Gnarbox as they clearly pushed hard with their marketing and got devices to a LOT of KZbinrs at the point of release (this kind of saturation makes me sceptical). Knowing your experience with the LaCie made me watch yours, and it certainly seems like a great product, but that price takes it out of the equation for me. Personally I'm ok with a little slower on my mobile workflow if it's less than half the price. Good vid though!

I got my Gnarbox 2.0 via Kickstarter and have had it for a while. With iPad OS the iPad is finally usable as a mobile editing system. I just got and iPad 11 pro to use with the Gnarbox. The wifi transfer with Luma Fusion is pretty quick but the real value of the combo is Ethernet mode on the Gnarbox. Transfers in Luma are super fast. I edited my last KZbin video on the plane from Las Vegas to NC. Overall it was a pretty darn good experience. I had to work with the Gnarbox support folks for an issue I had and they have been great. I also had the Gnarbox 1 which wasn't great the version 2 is so much better in every way.

E Y I’m very happy with it for the most part. I can’t think of better travel companion if you want to travel without a laptop. I bring my iPad with me everywhere may as well put it to use for video and photo editing. I love that the GB will only copy the parts of the video clips you mark in LumaFusion this can be a big space saver on the iPad versus copying the whole clip over like other solutions. The Ethernet mode on the new iPad Pro is great.

I am annoyed that the external storage functionality is still so handicapped on the ipad pro. Offloading and moving large amounts of files around is what I would consider a 'pro' necessity, even more so than having a full fledged NLE or any type of creative software. The current implementation is such a tease! Here I am, watching a video about yet another 'little computer' I need to buy to leave my macbook at home. lol.

The inclusion of usb c pretty much murdered the older lightning port iPad Pro lineup. Now a 30 dollar usb c hub and a portable hard drive is all you need. You’re honestly saving money at this point selling an older iPad Pro and getting a newer one rather than spending money on stuff that works with the lightning port or over wireless to avoid using the lightning port.

$15 sd to usb connector saved me on iPad Pro. tried the RAVpower for $70. Junk! Took 2 hours to transfer a 512 mb file over 5G wifi. Direct connection transferred 4 gigs in a minute. Only problem is you have to import into iPad photos app and only then does lumafusion access it.

I’ve been using “backup boxes” like this for 20 years. This has a few nice features, but it’s still a hard drive file storage/transfer unit. The problem with the old ones was failure, either hard drive or other components. These things are great to have, but I’d like to know how reliable it is. Both in file corruption and longevity. I’m retired now and mostly fly a drone to document personal travel and other outdoor activities . But this could come in handy for longer trips.

I suppose I’m just wondering, how can I learn the things you talk about so I understand them when I watch your video? At that point, perhaps I will be able to determine whether this is something I need, rather than just want. One more thing is I wonder if you would care to mention pricing.

Great presentation! Is the throughput fast enough on the Gnarbox to edit from in a pinch? I’ve been a film cutter for 30 years but I haven’t been on Premiere for 2 or 3 years (been doing my music on LogicPro X). My editorial boutique (which I closed in 2017) relied on PROMISE RAIDs in both Premiere bays. I guess the iPad storage & processing is natively sufficient to edit with?! Ben Balaran that doesn’t mean it’s not open source; you can always customize some bits of the project. I know because I do this kind of things on daily basis for machine vision and image/video analysis...

Hey. I wish I could afford one. I travel between my house and my sister's house. I work on a tablet and don't have a lot of storage. I am actually watching and typing on it. It will complete my mobile set up. Anyways, I enjoyed the video. Thank you for the content.

Pretty much Gnarbox endorsement which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I know there are other devices like that Sandisk SSD and wouldn’t even want all those features that has. Maybe it is simplistic but that’s what I would want only. Personally on my iPad Pro I never edit other than images and videos here and there....more of a novelty sitting on couch or in bed edits. Rather sit at my iMac for those with Wacom and everything I need to be efficient. How much are they anyway?

Speaking from a purely amateur view it’s Cheaper to drop your Narbox and buy new iPad Pro with IOS 13.4. Use Samsung SSD or other brand. Good advise though I have difficulty keeping up with your speed of presentation, could you slow down a bit.

Funny that you have the 2TB version but they don’t sell that in the link. But this is waayyy too pricey.

I am now doing a lot of local adjustments (brush stuff) - not really liking how that works. Masking kind of sucks and is far better on my Mac. For sliders and presets to share to the gram, sure.

I would love to see your mobile work flow. So you put your sd card in the Gnarbox, and import from there but then what? Where do the files ultimately live? How do you handle edit files? Do you only store the final exported images?

Is the GnarBox actually backing up or is it just mirroring the card?

This thing is $900 for just 1TB. You could buy about over 3TB of the fastest SD cards they offer nearly for this price.

How many gigs did you decide to get for your gnarbox. 500gbs doesn’t seem like enough. Do you clear out the gnarbox after your finished working on the project. And just have the rest of the files on a raid?

Excellent stuff! Is it possible to edit and export to the gnarbox 2.0 on the fly? Just wondering seeing that i have the 64gb ipad pro 2018. Also, it seems that this wont do CF cards, any suggestions for that option? Great vid, looking forward to your mobile ventures!

There are two usb-c ports on the Gnarbox. Just plug a card reader on one of them.

@Ted - what is the software you are using now on iPad? I know you did use Da Vinci but even on my MacBook which is newer it is painfully slow. I like the colour grading in there but the rest is slooooow.

We are returning ours. It is way too slow to edit video, even when directly connected to my 2020 iPad Pro for LumaFusion. No matter the price, it is too slow. On WiFi it is painfully slow to edit 4K video. I really wanted it to work.

You started mentioning XQD issues, but never continued. Does this have XQD Capability? If not, what would you recommend?
@creativepicnl

Quite pricey, yes. I used the ravpower Filehub and I was pretty happy with that device. I'd recommend it while i'm on the go. Now that Ipados is here i'm using a wired connection but I'm by far from happy with it and occasionally revert back to a wireless connection with Filebrowser. The files app however to me, is not working all that great. SMB connections are flimsy and with wired devices I tend to lose the disk index when the disk is idle. No bonjour functionality. There's no way to refresh the index and it loads back the index from the cache. (I think?) If an index fails to load from the start, there's no way on reloading it unless restarting the whole ipad which could reset it? Really happy that Apple made some steps but it's not working all that great. Filebrowser works way better than the native app. I really recommend that app for file management and exploring. It has (almost) everything you would expect from the Files app.
