I just got the new iPad Air with cellular and a pencil… I got it mainly for school but I want to use it for when I start flying as well. Was this a good choice? Once I get more experience I plan on getting my own ADS-B receiver with GPS but I would like to have the back up GPS just in case. I’m 6’6 so I am a pretty big guy and I didn’t like how the mini fit in my hands since I’ll be using it for school but I think the air isn’t that bad especially if I get a knee board! I would love to hear your insight!

Thanks! Follow up question, what kind of mount do you use in a C172 for flight training? Either put in next to your knee board, attach it to the yoke somehow or use a window suction mount...?? I'm thinking I'll go with the mini for my IFR rating I want to start soon.
@MichaelHsu953 жыл бұрын
A mount is not 100% necessary but I would recommend getting one as it makes life much easier. As for which mount to get, it really depends on the pilot. I wouldnt recommend a knee mount because everytime you look down at your ipad the airplane tends to drift or dive. Ive heard yoke mount or window sunction mounts are good, but again, it depends on the pilot. Hope I helped haha. Feel free to reach out on instagram if you have any more questions

If you haven't already made your decision on this, you do not need cellular data in the cockpit. For ADS-B in you will either have it built in to the transponder of the plane which will create a local wifi network, or you will carry your own portable ADS-B in that will do the same. Either way, when you are at altitudes above 3-4,000 AGL you will not be getting cellular signal. So if you want Wx and traffic data, you will need another solution.

How much memory should I purchase with the iPad ? Thanks
@MichaelHsu953 жыл бұрын
if you plan to use the ipad outside of flying as well i would highly recommend getting the highest memory and with cellular, if you only use it for flying, you can get the ipad with the least amount of memory as foreflight doesnt take up too much space

Cellular is the best option though it comes with a heavy price tag. Really, you don't need a cellular plan with it. The main benefit of a cellular iPad is that it has a GPS chip built in so you always have an accurate location. You can use a non-cellular iPad, but for an accurate location you will need an external device such as a GPS receiver, or preferably, an ADS-B IN device like the Stratus or Stratux. I use a non-cellular iPad with a Stratux unit, and it works great. I will probably shell out for the cellular version next time, though, as if my Stratux runs out of juice I can still see where I am on the map...of course, I will not be able to see the location of other aircraft without an external ADS-B receiver.

Hey, I am looking at adding an iPad for Foreflight. I will be getting a mini, but one question I have is should I get one with cellular? What features do I miss out on if I get an ipad without it? If I got with one with cellular do I need to add a line to it? Thanks
@EricLoser3 жыл бұрын
Depends. You will need some way to get GPS. The cellular versions come with the GPS chips embedded even if you don't utilize the cellular capability. However, if you have a Sentry or Stratus you'll get WAAS GPS, traffic, AHRS (back-up horizon and other gauges), and weather updates while flying. The Sentry also has a CO monitor. The iPad cellular would still be a nice GPS back-up for if / when the external craps out, but you'd lose out on traffic, AHRS, and weather updates while flying. When I first started out, I had a wi-fi enabled iPad without cellular. I then purchased a Bad Elf GPS that plugged into the lightning port and was able to get GPS through that. I didn't have traffic or weather, but it worked for helping navigate. Now, I use an iPad mini with cellular connected to a Sentry and love it. With Bose ANR and bluetooth, I get traffic alerts and other alerts from Foreflight into my headset while listening to some music on the flight. It works pretty well.
