Which is better - Agreeable Gray or Repose Gray?

I love agreeable grey, although we have a ton of natural light, and it looks light beige, not grey! If you want more grey, then trust me go with Repose Grey.. Have a great Day:)

I painted a good portion of my home repose gray, but I regret it. It's too cold. I'll be painting over it with something warmer in the near future.

I used Repose Gray in my house, except during the painting process I realized it was going to clash with my medium brown kitchen cabinets so I went with BM Revere Pewter in that part of the house, which worked beautifully. What I like about repose gray is how in some rooms it gives color, a touch of green or even blue. Agreeable gray is nice, but seems little too taupe/beige to me.

My sister used both of these colors in her house and they are both wonderful. She has repose gray in the large open areas. It is definitely the cooler of the two. To me it looks a tiny bit green in the evening when the lights come on, but in the best possible way, I love it! She has agreeable gray in a den with a warm colored rug and other furnishings. You can stand in the den and look at agreeable gray on the wall and see repose gray in the hall beyond it.

You are so knowledgeable about undertones and complementary colors. I almost didn’t click on this one because more gray. But it was interesting and informative. I won’t use gray in my interior because it makes me sad, like being inside a cloudy day. I am also a maximalist eclectic. I love lots of color and texture and pattern. My home is filled with Sherwin Williams color, like ash violet, lobelia, french roast and luxurious red. My neutral colors are latte and nomadic desert and sands of time. And all my trim is dover white! I love my house. I enjoy your videos very much but no gray inside my house!🌸

Just read your writing I don't like Grey either! I was surprised by the news that said the house will be sold quickly,if you paint in Grey color! I like bright colors! If I have my own house,I would like to have a yellow living room with colorful carpet or furniture!

I’m currently painting most of my house Repose Gray. I was looking for a true gray but I came to terms with the fact that there will always be undertones and I went with safe and popular because this is not my forever home. I kind of like that it’s a chameleon but I have yet to see it turn green. Sometimes it’s a beautiful light gray and other times it’s surprisingly dark, I’m okay with it looking blueish but it annoys me when it looks purple. Sometimes I think a graige would of been safer but I really wanted something on the gray side because it’s a combination of the ultimate neutral colors of white and black. Plus I just 💙💙💙 gray, I think it’s so elegant, organic and industrial at the same time.

I’m in the process of remodeling a home we recently purchased. I’ve definitely decided on the Farrow&Ball color “Hague Blue “ #30 for the entry foyer, dining , living rooms and main hallway! My plan is for a rich, elegant dramatic feel! In doing so, I’m having a problem segueing to a much lighter color in the open area which consists of the large great room, breakfast room and kitchen which has a lot of light and high ceilings! As you look to your left from the main hallway (Hague Blue) you can see the great room. I realize I need to be in the same color value but for the life of me I can’t decide! Whatever color I end up with, I want my kitchen cabinets painted with a color that’s darker than the walls but complimentary . Our home is more of a estate type home on 6 acres so I would like to stay in keeping with that. Please help me! I’m desperate as demolition is about to start and decisions have to be made!

I am so torn between the two! I currently have Sea Salt in my bedroom, bathrooms and laundry room. I LOVEEE IT! I paired it with white bedset furniture and light wood accents. I have Alabaster on my kitchen cabinets. I want the rest of the house to be all one color and I can't pick between Agreeable Gray or Repose Gray! ugh! I have light beige couches and wood dining table and chairs, side tables, coffee table. I loveee light woods but I don't want white walls like everyone these days has but I also don't want everything to look beige and drab. The walls are currently some beige from the previous owners and it just doesn't look good with the furniture. Everything looks bleh and I need to lighten the space but not a white or beige wall color. Anyone else have sea salt and alabaster in their house? what colors did you pair these two with? HELP! 😬

I have sea salt in the kitchen, laundry, and bathrooms. I am about to paint the living room and master repose. The agreeable has more of a taupe undertone and I'm trying to get away from that. I know a few people that have sea salt paired with repose and it's beautiful!

Perfect timing. I am considering repose gray for my living room and dining room. The rooms are north facing and are split by the entry way and staircase. The rooms get a lot of light. I have Sherwin williams 2 labels and the black, maroon, deep gold color makeup is slightly different. Why would that be the case? I enjoy your videos. Thanks

Late comment. My entire new-build house interior is Agreeable Gray and I am officially sick of it. It sounds odd but the main thing I dislike about it is that it really looks like it doesn't know if it wants to be gray or taupe. Depending on the time of day, it kind of leans toward one or the other, but it's not good enough as either. I now feel that repose gray is the right choice because it commits to gray. That said, I'm going for off-white walls now. I'll update in 5 years if/when I get sick of that one too!

A question I get asked a lot is, I need a true gray with just black or gray colorants used. I've been a painter for about 45 years and now I sell paint. Other than what I made with a bottle of Lamps Black, I can't think of any just gray. Do you or anyone in the community know something I can tell?

Yes, I think it's because even if black colorant is used, black itself is a mix of other colors (red, blue, green) so you can't get away from undertones. A true gray I recommend is BM Stonington Gray HC-170 but even that has a slightly blue undertone.

Hi Vera! Go with whatever makes you happy. For an accent wall, I think a Navy or a mint green could look work. Agreeable is a warmer color which you might like in a master bedroom.

@@giobrooks1955 Thanks Gio! I also have mixed feelings about it. I used it as a whole-house color. It's the perfect depth, lrv (high 60s) for what I wanted and it contrasts nicely with trim (I used Chantilly Lace). I needed to coordinate with yellow-toned oak floors and peachy kitchen tile, and wanted to give my 1920s home an "updated" feel. The color can be peachy in some light, which I don't mind but also quite golden in afternoon sun which I don't love. I like it best in whiter light when it's soft, light and almost greige. It's decent, but I probably wouldn't use it again.

Hey James, remember how I’ve complained on numerous videos of yours about my purple flashing Agreeable Gray kitchen cabinets that are the bane of my existence? Lol.. well guess what? We are having them repainted because I just can’t deal! Yeah I know it was a very costly mistake and lesson learned. My cabinet maker also color matched the AG so that didn’t help either because as I’ve learned neutral colors are much more complicated to color match. Well anyway, I no longer have to paint my walls Chantilly Lace to offset the problem, and I’m able to go back to designing what I want for the space instead of damage control design. So much happier. Just had to bite the bullet and do it. Let this be a warning to anyone about to embark on cabinet painting, color matching, and using light / medium neutrals. Maybe you can do a video on the subject to help more people!

Hi Raya! Happy you're happier! In general color matching can be a challenge because everyone's base and colorants are different too, so it's never going to be an exact match, so good to keep in mind.

@@thepaintpeople I think this is the case with a lot of cabinet makers / companies, they tend to color match and aren’t willing to use the actually manufacturers paint. My guy was not willing to use Sherwin Williams, nor provide me with a sample unfortunately.

Not sure why that would be but I’m guessing because there’s more of a variety of colors mixed in them? That’s kinda how I interpret that, but I would LOVE to see a video going more in depth on how paint colors are created and mixed and how color matches are done, etc. Take us behind the scenes and give us the science! I’m an engineer by the way so I kinda need it all broken down, and you’ve got the goods to teach us. 😁

I am Sooooo tired of people talking about different shades of GRAY GREY !!! There is a rainbow out there and it seems like MOST decorating is done with the color that MOST people dislike in REAL life. People HATE GRAY DAYS! They LOVE BLUE skies. Multi colored sunsets full of purple and orange, Sunrises full of pink and gold and Flowers full of all colors. Yet they surround themselves with the color they dislike MOST!!! WHY??? COWARDS??? Black is definitely not flattering to most skin tones. Black comes in as many shades as white does. White is actually more flattering in the correct shade. Black rooms are incredibly great for hanging GOOD art on. MOST people have NO fashion sense and a huge percentage are vastly overweight AND think black makes them look smaller! HA! People wear black because they are LAZY. The companies that make clothing know this so they make black clothes. I do have an outfit that has stripe pants in several colors that I do wear an orange or periwinkly blue top with. But I had to pay too much for the pants for them to be not black. My bedroom is Hinting Blue. I’ve bought glass paint to cure a window covering issue. I mix most of the colors I use in the house. Then I have a paint store match it. The manager of a SW store and I had a discussion about the Hinting Blue. I told him that I saw purple in it. I WANT the purple but it seems to come and go depending on the sheen. He actually had to look at the formula to know that… yes there. is a purple undertone. They don’t have an eggshell finish. They lie. It’s satin. They spell it egshel. It’s a coined word. So in order to get a matte finish I had to get flat which changes the color again. Women should manage paint stores. They have more rods and cones to see color better. 😏
