i think hereditary is more in your face "i want you to be scared right now" while midsommar is more of a "youre not terrified during this film but oh boy will you be thinking about this for weeks". i honestly love both movies and i think ari did a great job directing these. I love the comparison in this video frfr

Ari Aster has a thing for the nuclear family trope. He attacks and infiltrates such a trope that many are meant to find comfort and solace in. That’s what makes his films follow an element of “relatable” horror. I wrote a graduate conference paper in which I dissected the influences that Aster portrays in both of these films from a perspective of pre-18th century British literature. :)

hereditary is a good possession horror movie, it definetely gets points for that, whereas in midsommar you find yourself often questioning whether you like or sympathise with certain characters more or less just cause the cult in it is indoctornating you as a viewer along with the main character. it's not about the graphic scenes or anything you actually see, it's about how the movie alters your own opinions as it goes, proving just how easy it is for cults to brainwash people.

Uh hereditary is just a better film it’s just everything coming together perfectly and wether you hate it love you see invested and never bored. Acting , cinematography, story, themes , details , story and you can talk about the meaning(s) for hours it is my favorite film . I rewatched midsomer it’s not bad very good but just a bit long and boring in some parts it doesn’t have the dark visceral unique one in a million one of a generation films . I fully believe hereditary is our shining . Will be forever remembered . We will be remembering and discussing this film in 100 years. I saw theee times in theaters maybe I’m biased but you can’t compare the two. It’s also great to delve into all the detail and once you get a full picture of everything there is a detailed thorough plot and plan the cult plays out. You can find new things every time and I live to show it to people who can handle it . I’ve seen it like 12 times and I never am tired if it . I watch once a year

you failed to mention that christian is extremely manipulative and abusive to dani and is an overall terrible person, not just to dani but to his "friends" as well. he wasn't being kind to dani by not breaking up with her or inviting her to sweden; he only did those things because if he didn't it would've made him look really bad. he's extremely selfish and uses those around him to his advantage instead of doing any work himself (shown when he copies josh's thesis). this is central to the plot and essential to any discussion of the movie

i personally think that the scene of the elderly couple jumping off of the cliff is unrealistic, in terms of visuals. i remember watching it and thinking to myself "there would be more blood". but that also begs the question "does their age and shroom consumption over the past 90 years have an effect on the blood circulation system in their bodies?". i do not know the answer to that question, but if the director specifically decided to make the gore a little bit unrealistic as a creative decision, it does bring out unease in people who are fairly familiar with gore and what happpens to human bodies in these situations. people who seek out weird stiff like gore will go out of their way to watch horror movies like this, so making them feel something through catching them off guard seems reasonable. I hope this makes sense, i loved this video and the re-cap you did on the movies, keep posting! i'm looking forward to more 👍

Hereditary scared the the crap out of me. I a hate crawly people too! I absolutely loved the fact that it was terrifying AND had an actual solid storyline. My mouth physically dropped with a gasp many times in this movie! But Midsommar stayed with me. Like it “affected” me. The way they pull you to feel so bad and even protective for Danny is wild. You end up hating Christian as much as she does by the end and I found myself almost proud of her for choosing (and ultimately enjoying) killing Christian. Fun fact: I learned that the movies’ lighting and use of color throughout the film change as Danny’s moods improve 🤪

Toni Collette was the best part of Hereditary. I thought the tone of the movie was unsettling. I had issues with the illogical aftermath of the accident with the car and the pole. Midsommar also had an unsettling tone and disturbing circumstances. Horror in broad daylight. But I found myself so utterly disgusted with the cliff scene that I can't bear to watch that movie again because of that scene. Midsommar overall gives me a sick feeling in my stomach, and Hereditary doesn't.
