10:02 I own that Keepsake Edition, and I've done some inspecting. Firstly, there are no bonus features, sound options, or even any setup screens. Cricket on the Hearth is on the same DVD instead. The film looks grainy. It's pretty hard to miss, to be honest. The intro might have had a brownish tint at first that got corrected. But I couldn't see it to clearly, so if it was there, it wasn't as prominent as it was elsewhere. "Burl Ives Sings": It looks like "BURl" The animal sounds in "There's Always Tomorrow" are not present. "We are Santa's Elves" is in full. Speaking of the elves, they are entirely blue clothes until towards the end. At that point, some of them go green, while others remain blue. One of them seemed to permanently turn to green clothes after "We Are Santa's Elves." It's highly inconsistent by my observations, but at least Hermey always has blue clothes. "Everyone wishes for silver and gold": "for" is there. I listened to it like 6 times, and I could not tell whether "Everyone" was clipped or not. If it was, it was masked with a sound effect. Which, in that case, might be an indication of desynced audio. Yukon Cornelius always has green clothing. "As good as everyone felt" sounded like it was clipped. The peppermint scene was present. The ending had a whooshing wind sound to it. The sleigh lifting off, I'm pretty sure I noticed a bit of a skip before it cross faded to Sam the Snowman. These are my observations, but I may have misheard some things/saw something incorrectly. The Limited Keepsake Edition is the one I'm most familiar with, as I've seen that one more than any others. I never noticed anything odd before, so your videos brought some interesting information to my attention.
@gabbyhaynes539427 күн бұрын
I also owned the limited keepsake edition growing up as a kid... I'm convinced those DVD presses of the Rankin Bass films are cursed. Mr. Magoo and Little Drummer Boy straight Up did not play out of the box. They would just cause the player to freeze and required the disk to be removed. Like they forgot the files completely on that pressing. Santa Clause, Cricket on the Hearth, and Rudolph all worked fine. Frosty The Snowman had a similar issue where after about a year of use- no matter which version you selected it would only play "Frosty Returns" and not the original. We knew the disk HAD the original frosty on it- but no matter how much we cleaned it up the dvd would always play Frosty Returns.
@Hovergoat_Guy27 күн бұрын
@gabbyhaynes5394 Hmm... odd. I can't confirm or deny much about Mr. Magoo or Little Drummer Boy, as I used that disc a whole one time ever. However, the Frosty Disc in my copy has never given any issues from what I remember.
@lyandraangel13 күн бұрын
I don't think I've ever had problems with my set, but I generally don't watch Cricket or Magoo, and rarely watch LDB or Returns for that matter. I usually make a point of watching Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty and Rudolph every year then watch my *other* Christmas collection which has Year Without a Santa Claus and the original animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas (and largely ignoring the rest, those two are my favorites).

I almost wonder if the 1964 version being apparently in bad condition and unable to get a new scan is the reason CBS airs such a poor version to this day. They probably couldn't scan the "We're a Couple of Misfits" song for their 2005 TV cut, so they just used the visuals of Fame and Fortune with the audio of the older song. Personally, I'd rather they'd have just used Fame and Fortune there if that really was the case, rather than do such a poor editing job, even if the Fame and Fortune song is inferior. I'd rather have CBS show a consistent cut of the film with an inferior song than an inconsistent cut.
@D.W.GranataАй бұрын
@curtthegamer934 No problem, beginning December 6, NBC will take care of that after 52 years on CBS, except it'll clock in to its new 1-hour-15-minute timeslot, (Not bad for a 52-minute TV special.) and everything that CBS took back out, since 2005, will be put back in, especially "We're a Couple of Misfits," and Yukon's 3rd prospector attempt and/or success to find himself a peppermint mine near Santa's workshop. "Fame and Fortune" won't be invited to the "extended" broadcast, though.

I own the 2007 DVD release of it, and while it is the least good in terms of picture quality, I still liked it. I got it during the 2016 holiday season, and I was just happy to upgrade the special from vhs to dvd, after so many years. Yeah, I know I could've gotten the blu ray of it, but after hearing that the blu ray releases weren't the best, I just went with it. Plus, I was just plain happy to have a home video release of the peppermint scene, and having Fame and Fortune as a bonus feature. And while the green on Yukon's coat is a bit jarring, in a way, the picture quality it has does give it a vintage feel. Rudolph is my favorite Christmas special of all time. I watch it like multiple times each year at Christmas. Not just on home video regardless of home, but also on tv. CBS keeps screwing it with the "We're a Couple Misfits" number, so Freeform does it better, even if it doesn't cut and edit things for commercial breaks that well. Would anyone hate me if I find the 2007 release decent enough warts and all?

Ultimately, the problem with home media releases of this and a lot of other animated specials is just that, simply put, corporations don't care about children's media.They'll put out whatever they have and call it good enough, and animation especially rarely gets the treatment it deserves. It's getting better as high quality scans become cheaper and faster to produce, but it's still fairly common to see animation get DNR-ed because the execs think that's what the people want. Plus you add in Rudolph's age and numerous broadcast variations, including sponsor tags that will almost certainly never be seen officially, and you end up with a movie that will probably never have an "ideal" home media release. I'm a big fan of a Charlie Brown Christmas and am in the same situation there - I've resorted to watching an unofficial, unrestored film print to see the special in its unaltered form in high definition.

My favorite releases: 1. 1988, 1989, and 1993 VHSs. I really like the unrestored masters for its nostalgia and colors despite being the 1965 version and having a lot of dirt and scratches all over the place. However, I hate it that when Santa Claus yells "MERRRRRRYYY CHRIIIIISTMAAAAS!" for the second time, its so high pitched and sped up that its creepy and sounds wrong. 2. The 2002 DVD. The introduction is great, the Sony Wonder logo gives me nostalgia, the menu is great... The master itself is great, way better than the Golden Books VHS. Its grainy, doesnt have DNR, and despite its flaws, its really watchable. 3. The 4K Ultra HD release. It looks fantastic. There are no unnecessary green colors, and heck, there's finally an aqua jacket on Yukon, but I wish that the scenes with DNR either removes the DNR or are replaced with the upscales versions of the 2002 DVD release master with the colors adjusted to match the colors of the rest. I also wish that "good" isn't clipped. They should've fixed it in the 5.1 surround sound remaster. And tbh, i agree. The Genius DVD is the worse one. I hate how muted the colors look, the green colors should not be in the master, and they look boring. Also, the audio problems are terrible. Even worse, the music video that sucked so bad is included on there. Destiny's Child is fine, but no, that one sucked. Obviously ruined the magic of Rudolph too much.

Looking at the versions I own, on DVD I seem to have the worst print. That being the 2007 Genius release with the grossly faded colors (which I think even I noticed back then). The disc is scratched on mine so it skips a lot on the Island of Misfit Toys song, but with this being a shitty release of the special, it's not really a huge loss as I can now just easily buy a better copy of the special anyway. I've also got a 1993 VHS released by F.H.E., but I don't know where it's at currently. Also now just checking the YTP I did of Rudolph back in 2017, since I usually get my sources from wherever online, I must've have sourced the special from a 2010 blu-ray rip (because I noticed the green on Yukon's clothes throughout).

Unibersal better re-release the 4K with Dolby Vision. They are re-releasing Shaun of the Dead with it.

There’s an earlier Sony Wonder DVD from 2001 that opens with a Pillsbury Christmas commercial before the special begins. The cover art also has the Golden Books pattern on the left side of the cover. Does your copy open with it?

It doesn't.

I have a Blu-Ray of the special that came in 5-disc set (including Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman, Little Drummer Boy, and Cricket on the Hearth) in a Steelbook case. It has Universal branding when playing. I'm assuming it is either the 2018 Blu-Ray or a Blu-Ray version of the 2021 4K. I'm inclined to believe it is the latter since I bought it in 2023 from GRUV.

So, is the 2002 DVD the only version with “Fame & Fortune”, or just the best version with that song?
@KingLaneCreations Жыл бұрын
The Fame & Fortune Song is also on the 2004 and 2007 DVDs as well.

Oh, yeah, and it's also on the 2010 Vivendi DVD, which is basically just the infamous Genius DVD, (with DVNR nasty muted colors, and green hues on some of the elves and Yukon) except with Vivendi Entertainment slapped on the DVD and case.

Hmmm guess I have a reprint copy of the 2002 DVD because the copy I have of the 2004 DVD (which does still have the Destiny’s Child CD by the way) DEFINITELY has the Arthur Rankin intro!

Since Rudolph is moving back to NBC, do you think they’ll use the 2022 4K Blue Ray master/transfer?

I hope so.

Now I’m curious! Which version did they broadcast this year on NBC? Or was it an entirely new version? They definitely cut to commercial at different moments than in the original 60’s broadcasts
@KingLaneCreations23 күн бұрын
I made an updated version of my broadcast changes video that talks about NBC's version. From what I saw, it looked like they combined the 4K print with the Deluxe print. But most of the errors from the Deluxe print remain.
