For sceptic systems, it isnt recommended to use bleach but hydrogen peroxide based toilet bowl cleaners since hydrogen peroxide keeeps the sceptic healthy by not killing all the bacteria. You need bacteria in the sceptic to break down human waste. If you dont need to drink from the toilet bowl, but want to keep it from getting discolored or developing rings, etc, then lysol hydrogen peroxide will keep it looking good.

This is always a concern of mine, too. There’s some comfort, though, in that by the time the used product reaches the septic tank, it’s very diluted by subsequent flushes and any water flow afterward. Regardless, whether we use sanitizers/disinfectors or not, our septic systems’ beneficial flora are under constant siege. It’s why I get my tank pumped out every year or so, and treat it monthly with enzymes to replace what’s been lost.

Baking soda & vinegar cancel each other out. So the only active ingredient is tea tree oil. Nothing effective about that. I wish ppl would stop mixing those 2 ingredients. You have to use them separately.

@@FieldOfFocus I watched another youtube video testing vinegar on bacteria under the microscope and it wiped them out instantly but mixed with baking soda it didn’t kill any. It seems so simple and obvious now but none of us think of it when we see it foaming up and must be cleaning a bunch. Vinegar kills bacteria because it’s an acid and it destroys the bacteria’s bodies. Baking soda is basic so when mixed with vinegar it actually changes the ph of it which defeats the purpose of using an acid disinfectant.

Correct! They cause a chemical reaction that converts them into water and salt (with a little bit of heat). This neutralizes any real benefits either would have given separately. They both work really well separately though! Maybe try just vinegar, some dish soap and essential oils for your testing if you haven't already.

When the Lysol says to empty the toilet bowel, I think it might be saying to push the water down the drain with the brush, use quick pushing motions like you are using a plunger. My mom taught me to clean the bowl this way. This makes less water in the bowl, the cleaner will be more concentrated, the water level will be lower so you have higher concentration at the normal water level where the infamous water ring sits and since the Lysol had a high sudsy action with the water, it will not suds as much with less water.

I just wonder how long that bowl will stay disinfected and what difference it makes on health? My guess is that with the exponential rate of growth bacteria will return to previous level within a few days. My guess is that as long as there is no visible slime layer in the toilet sanitizing your toilet is unimportant at home. In a hospital or public setting transmission of disease may be important. I have always found that tim to be discussing and hard to clean. I would concentrate my efforts in that area.

I live in a rural area with septic and well and very hard water. I've tried various toilet cleaners and for me, the miracle cleaner is to dump a bunch of bleach into the toilet, close the lid and leave it for a while. Afterward, when flushed, the toilet is sparkling clean, even the rings and inside of the lids are spotless. I guess the fumes from the bleach make it unnecessary to brush the surfaces. I haven't tried testing for bacteria and am not sure what this does to my septic and the groundwater, but it sure does clean. Love bleach for toilets, but do you approve? xoxo

Leaving the water in the toilet... so I try to follow label instruction as the manufacturer writes them.. If they say empty the bowl, then I get my red solo cup and empty it.. If they don't, then I don't. Plus I think most people don't or won't bother emptying the water before cleaning. So it is a realistic view of cleaning. Wondering if you could try a diluted mix of water and pine-sol or of any cleaner with the strength of its potency on the first day of diluting the cleaner compared to the same diluted mix several days later? I know bleach mix with water only lasts for 24 hours but I was wondering how long the same could be said with other water diluted cleaners as I use pine-sol and fabuloso in a spray bottle mix with water but I can’t help to empty it everyday and renew it everyday just to make sure it is doing its job.

@FieldOfFocus what about baking soda in water? The vinegar neutralized the baking sodas cleaning properties.

When I was young and dinosaurs still roamed the earth, both my mother and grandmother taught me to clean the toilet bowl with a combination of regular household bleach (about a half cup) along with a bit of laundry detergent (about a quarter cup--and remember, back then it wasn't super concentrated like it is today). I wonder if the addition of detergent to the household bleach would give it any extra oomph for the purpose of disinfection. Inasmuch as the straight bleach already does a reasonably good job, I suspect the detergent that my mother was adding might be the difference between straight bleach and the specialty Clorox product.

Hello, watching you from France. Your videos are very interesting. Just one question : don't you think flushing the toilets brings back bacteria from the reservoir ? Bonne continuation ! ☺️
@FieldOfFocus2 жыл бұрын
Hello!! Thank you for watching my videos! I do think it is possible if there is bacteria in the tank to have that get back into the toilet. I think that is too hard for me to remove when conducting these tests. I guess I could flush with distilled water, but that really wouldn't be real world testing. But yes it is possible that some bacteria might be inherently in the toilet tank. Thank you so much for watching!!!!!

Love your videos. Can you do one where you create a "cinnamon soup" and apply it to the toilet bowl? I am also wondering if flushing has some kind of effect, maybe the toilet tank water has bacteria which is countereffective to cleaning?
@FieldOfFocus Жыл бұрын
Could you explain what the cinnamon soup is?? Flushing rinses away the cleaners, and I see it as a control because that is something that I cannot change. I have tested my water many times for bacteria and haven't found any yet. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@earthenscience Жыл бұрын
@@FieldOfFocus You are most welcome. Okay by cinnamon soup I refer to some way to make cinnamon a liquid, in order to test its effect on bacteria. I would like to know the effect of cinnamon on bacteria. And, do you have any videos showing the effect of various detergents, including all natural detergents?
@FieldOfFocus Жыл бұрын
I did test Cinnamon Essential Oil in this video "Can Essential Oils Stop Bacteria from Growing on a Petri dish? " kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn3Kn2CLapWUgq8 As for various and natural detergents, I do have a Laundry Playlist.. and I am adding to that as time goes on. Is there any particular natural detergent you have in mind?
@earthenscience Жыл бұрын
@@FieldOfFocus Good video but I would like to see just pure cinnamon particles in some kind of soup. Also, the video seems to show the oil applied to a petri dish, but your other videos seem to show a sample added to a dish after cleaning a surface with a solution. I would like to see the cinnamon soup applied in a manner consistent with the other videos of yours I've watched. The other reason I request a cinnamon soup is because I am cautious about essential oils. A white paper I read suggests that the science behind essential oils haven't had time to form yet, and to exercise caution. For instance, I used to haphazardly sprinkle Peppermint essential oil at random, to try to improve air quality. But after a while I started to notice a new foul odor, and I concluded that the odor was from the peppermint oil becoming rancid. As for natural detergents, I would like to see ones commonly available for purchase, so I can see which one best fits my needs. Detergents I am looking for are ones which are healthy to breathe in and good for the skin, ideally the detergent's residue should have a pH of 5.5.

Ah well I took empty the toilet as to mean flush and I did that. Dr Bronner’s says to turn off valve and empty which in all honesty I think is unrealistic for most people when cleaning. So I took “empty the toilet” to mean flush. I have a backlog of about 15 viewer requests, I will put this on the list to empty the toilet and retest them all. Thanks for the comment. The Lysol test wasn't conducted properly. She didn't squirt it under the rim. That's why you have to use the bottle. She also rubbed the swab over the top of the toilet which hadn't been cleaned. The same with the last cleaner. I'd like to see this redone properly with control of application and swabbing only inside the bowl.

This is the second of your videos I've watched. Thanks for your efforts to inform your viewers about cleaning products' effectiveness. I wonder what the results of testing Lysol toilet bowl cleaner with Bleach rather than with hydrogen peroxide would be? I'm guessing the result would be similar to the Clorox with bleach product you tested. Comparing Clorox with bleach formula with Lysol with hydrogen peroxide seems like an apples and oranges comparison; comparing Clorox with bleach and Lysol with bleach seems like a better comparison (apples to apples). Thoughts?

Hey there! Thanks for watching! Yes, normally that is what I would think to do also, however I was following the instructions from Woman's World Website.. www.womansworld.com/posts/home/essential-oil-toilet-bowl-cleaner-122479 "Essential Oil Toilet Bowl Cleaner Ingredients 1 cup white vinegar 1/2 cup baking soda 20 drops tea tree essential oil Instructions To make your cleaner, place all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake rigorously before each use. To use your cleaner, spray it all around your toilet bowl when you’re ready to clean it, and allow to sit for two to five minutes before scrubbing. There you have it! This essential oil toilet bowl cleaner proves that natural cleaning is not only possible, but cheap and easy! Using staple ingredients you have in your home, you can keep your family safe and your home clean with ease."
