Very helpful video. I bought a cheap hollow kalimba a year ago and I've only just picked it up again now. The stiff or dead tines on this cheap one are leaving me discouraged, so I'm looking at either getting a higher quality hollow kalimba or a higher quality flatboard one. I'd like the hollow for taking out with me, but the flats are so soft sounding and gentle. I might get the higher quality hollow one and allow my KAS to go rogue at a later date. I'd like at least one of each type eventually. I thought about maybe trying to replace the tines in the one I have but I don't know how effective that would be.

So I got a 17k hollow Moozica (mahogany) that arrived today. Everything's in tune, no dead/stiff tines, it's absolutely beautiful and sounds amazing. I haven't been able to put it down since it arrived. You can definitely tell it's a much much higher quality than the 17k hollow cega I got to start with.

Hi! higher pitch bars, you mean more treble than bass something, right I think you should go with flatboard kalimbas. The Lingting one in this video is an example of flatboard kalimba, that one has more treble, if I understand what you mean correctly. Thanks for dropping a comment!

Hi Megh, The kalimba with built-in pickup and the one without is the same if you are refering to the hollow body kalimba (the one in this video). The only difference is that you can plug in the one with pickup to an amplifier which can make the sound louder, that can also be used in recording by which you need an interface like iRig, connecting it to your phone. I am so confused between the hollow n flatboards....the hollow ones gives u the longer resonance n vibration BUT I have heard that the end tines gives a little bit of trouble cuz it gets tighter or smt.. WHEREAS the flatboards gives u a more softer and decent sound BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY HOLES IN IT😭😭😭 I LIKE TO HAVE BOTH OF THEM BUT I CAN'T BUY BOTH.💔💔 SO What should i do???? P.s. I suggest you try hollow kalimba first. Don't worry about the end tines. You will barely use them anyway. Learn more songs with your hollow kalimba, then if you are longing for another type of tone, that's the time to consider flatboard kalimba 💛😃

Hi! Thanks! Hope this answer may help: All kalimbas are fine regarding the tines, everything seems comfortable to hold in your palm, not heavy. All in C, except Lingting K17P which is originally in B, and I adjusted it even lower to Bb. The smell I’m refering to is only about k17cap, that’s normal for that type of wood, however smell vanishes after some time. You don’t need the all other key centers if you are just going to practice, a kind of hobby, but if you will play with a band, accompaniment of other musical instruments, you will realize the need for the other key centers

Hi! ‘No effects’ means raw audio, with effects, I add reverb and compressor. Reverb is an echo-like effect while compressor makes the sound whole rounded which also prevents the peak of the sound signal.

Flat type or hollow kalimba should be fine for beginners, and I heard of Gaharu. Gaharu makes quality kalimba. It’s the type of wood in Indonesia and the maker named his child as Gaharu, I heard 😊💛

Hi! Gecko 17cap wont be ideal for outdoors too just like other flatboard kalimbas, but as compared to other flatboard and acrylic kalimbas in this video, 17cap seems the loudest and you get the convenience of its playability because of the tines (size and distance).

@@jasonk.6909 for outdoor playing, best to have a hollow body kalimba, any hollow body kalimbas from Gecko or Lingting are fine, but if you want flatboard, K17cap of Gecko is fine as well. If you will make a video, you can actually do a prerecording first, then shoot the video outdoor.

It’s tested by many kalimba players already while the start-up brands, we are not sure of their products’ performance yet, but their kinda cheaper also, but i’m always holding my judgment for their kalimbas. I’m receiving some kalimbas soon from start-up companies. I’ll try them - Yes, I love Lingting hehe

I want to buy one. All the recommended videos talk about lingting, gecko, kimi. Non of those are available here in India. Should I buy another one? That’s an idea but i am not really sure how it will be feasible for kalimba makers and sellers. Like, it might become heavy and a quite quiter than the flatboard ones. 😊

I really dislike how there are so many differently branded Kalimbas probably made at the same one or two factories in China or India with the same identical parts made at yet another factory. Different people who want to cash on it just make orders with their own stupid brand name. (Because many of the brand names they come up with are just plain stupid. Either unpronounceable and/or nonsensical)
