yes and no actually. It kinda depends on what kinda job you have. As an example: my dad is an teacher in an international school in sweden. ( and yes, my dad and I are americans )

The English keyboard you have is like a hybrid British/US keyboard, quite unique. I'm American but prefer the UK keyboard layout. Nice big Enter/Return key, smaller shift and caps lock makes room for an extra key. I often need to type French or German words. For MacOS the option key makes it very easy to type German umlaut and French accents: opt+U (ü), opt+e (é), opt+` (è), opt+i (î). It's very intuitive. I'm not sure what the Windows equivalent is though.

This is the standard US International layout. The US keyboard you are used to is probably the older US ANSI layout. It is easy to tell them apart from the size of the Enter key, which is larger in the US International layout.

Great and surprisingly niche video. Loved it. I have to choose between the German keyboard and US for a tech job in Germany now, and this helped a lot! Thanks.

Interesting to see this, Tom! When I lived in Germany, the biggest adjustment for me was the z and y differences on the keyboard. (Though that was 1997-2000…so there was not nearly as much work to do on the other keys in the various apps!). Now, if there was a button I could push that could help this American pronounce the “ö” correctly, I’d pay real money for that. (And a button to correct my dreadful German grammar.) 😂

As I as a German am using an US (small but long enter key) or English international Keyboard (big enter key) my workflow for the ö,ä,ü is pressing the option key+u (which creates " ¨ ") and then the letter I want to transform into ö,ä,ü. For example ¨ and a for ä and so on. With this workflow im faster in writing than long pressing a for example. Im on Mac by the way. Don't know if this works for windows as well. Hope this is clear enough and helps :)

As others have mentioned, that isn't a normal American keyboard, which uses the ANSI layout instead of ISO. IIRC, this is called a "US International" layout, but in all my years, I've never seen one like that. Honestly, you have to go put of your way to find an ISO keyboard here in the states. While I'm at it, considering you seem to do lots of typing, I'm surprised you're using a chicklet keyboard. Dunno about you, but for prolonged typing, gimmie a full-travel keyboard any day. Preferably with some nice clicky switches.

I made up a custom keyboard in Ukelele. I combined having all the US keyboard keys such as [];' and so on with the ease of access of Ä, Ö, Ü and ß. So far is has been good. IMHO the German keyboard is not very kind to programmers but it is what it is.

I have a US layout on my current machine but I have also used an external German keyboard when I lived in Germany. Fortunately, however, I'm a touch typer, so it doesn't really matter (too much) what layout my machine is... only trouble is when I need a symbol I don't use so often, like |.

This video was quite interesting! I'm currently trying to get use to with azerty because I want to improve my french typing, so coming from a qwerty keyboard (Spanish and English layouts) it's quite confusing, but yeah, is not that hard to be honest. Maybe someday when I'm done with french I might learn the qwertz layout!

I like the UK layout. The position of @ and ", make the most sense to me. Weirdly though, my enter/return key is smaller, and my shift key is two keys long, which I prefer.

If people did care about writing speed, they'd be using neo2 keyboard layout for german text, as its buttons are placed in a way to maximize the amount of hand switching while reducing the amount of travel time, which in turn reduces the average time to write the next letter. It also has a ton of layers to benefit those who do a lot of science-related writing. You do need to learn something completely new though.

Or one of the more modern variants such as the "noted" layout of the neo layout family.

You should check out the AZERTY French keyboard, the Mac layout especially (the windows one isn't at all, CTRL + ALT + 7 to put the AT sign lmao) is very convenient in a lot of ways, the only thing that is kinda annoying is "AZERTY" instead of "QWERTY" and stuff related to some symbols some are replaced by French accent letters

I am using the keyboard for programming. And now, after moving to Germany, this is the biggest dilemma I am having now!. For all my life, I only used the US layout keyboards. I tried my wife's MBA and almost lost all my hair! Now I am looking to buy an MBA as well. But, only the German layout MacBooks are on sale.

Thanks for the useful, educational video Sir! A few days ago i purchased a laptop from one of the famous stores for computers and electric devices in Leipzig. They didn't tell me the keyboard will be German standard type. So now I'm wondering if they can purchase the same model but with a QWERTY type.

Thanks for your detailed insights. I'm developing a tool for single-key-tap switching language layouts (or IMEs). I thought it would be helpful for people living in Europe where they have a higher chance to dealing with multiple languages more than just two. I first searched videos about how French and Spanish cross-typing with English looks like (sorry, that order is just randomly decided lol) and I'm deeply disappointed about their carelessness to how much awful the special-characters-input shortcuts are, e.g. ctrl (bottom left) + backtick (top left corner). I don't know how often their special characters appear in their language, and even though I had a CapsLock->Ctrl/Esc remap, that still sounds insane to me. I mean, all of them, every most watched videos and I believe a lot of them are native French or Spanish speakers. Until I encountered this video from related suggestion, I finally understand the jokes about how German is "stubborn" and "strict". This is the gold character for improving user experience and human life. Oh, forgot to mention, technically it's a UK layout you're comparing with, I think. It's also very similar to a JIS layout which younger Japanese are also reducing its usage now.

the german keyboard layout is possibly the second worst, if you exclude the french one. besides y and z being swapped(i hate it) all the other keys are different too, it's as if they had to make it as unusable as possible for anyone else in the world. also, there's no reason for the return key to be that big. we should've all settled for the ANSI layout, and no i'm not american, it simply is superior.
@blackbot7113
@blackbot7113 10 ай бұрын
What makes it superior in your opinion? ISO has one more key, that seems like a good reason to use it. Also those wide shift and enter keys.

I don't mind at all you respond in German,, I'm a native speaker of Dutch, but we've all learned German during Middle and High School and even though I won't embarrass myself write in German here, I will say that I very much enjoy reading and listening to it. Switching between languages because of different task is a great idea!
