May may, this is a good video. It is hard to know what one will like and what will make sense to you as an individual. I feel that you did a great pretty much unbiased review (although I am a Scanncut girl through and through, lol). It is hard to address an audience of people with no experience with cutters to ones with a wealth of experience, both successes and failures. Thank you.

Just a quick note about the Scan&Cut (Brother). There is a downloadable version of the software, Canvas, available for pc. My personal choice for software is Inkscape (which is an open source free graphic design program.) I have to use the S&C software to convert svg files to cutting files. I only have the S&C and use for everything from scanning images to creating and cutting out stamps.

This is a great history, thank you. I purchased a Cricut first, and I had the gypsy (many people don't remember that little jewel. It served as a way to design things off line.) Anyway, I gave my Cricut away and purchased a Pazzles. Oh my gosh, I LOVED that Pazzles, I could design to my heart's content...I made stamps, I made die cuts I designed everything but...and here's the rub I was unable to scan and cut. So, I gave my Pazzles away and decided to wait to see which one to purchase...Scan n Cut or Pazzles upgrade, which includes a scan feature. It does not have the same flexibility, apparently, as Scan n Cut so now I'm still on the fence. I am an artist and would love to have more flexibility to die cut my paper dolls and designs. Have you used the Pazzles? Let me know what you think about that one. Pazzles sold the initial software for the cutting machines to Cricut (a fact not many people know, I'm not sure why.)

I was looking at the Cameo like 5 years ago but never wanted to spend the money - hubby did the research beyond the pricing and bought me a Cricut Explorer - it sat in the box for months (I was a Die user and didn't want to give them up) but finally I took it up to the cabin and hooked it up to my computer with hubbys help and I was hooked! Last year he asked what I wanted for Christmas - I asked for the S&C 2 I wanted it for cutting out my stamps and Jenn Of Eve Design templates (I cannot fussy cut & my daughter was getting tired of being asked to do it). Absolutely love it! I don't think I will ever get the Maker unless I have to because they kill the Explorer updates though, i can do everything I need to with what I have - Sizzix, Cricut, S&C and I am all set. Hubby thinks there must already be some sort of scanner in the machines already because of the way the Print&Cut feature works on the Cricut, plus in my DS app there is a feature where I can take a photo of a mat and I guess it can use that to do Cutting but I have not tried it out yet

Thank you, that helps a lot as I am leaning toward the Scan-n-Cut as I stamp & the fuzzy cutting saves time & with age I realize time is actually more precious than the $$$$ anywho I also was so confused w/ the hearing of Cricut Maker as I do love my Cricut Expression. God bless to you

Maymay, I’m a graphic designer and have a lot of software including Adobe creative cloud and I don’t necessarily want to pay a monthly fee to use software that may or may not be compatible with the files I create in my adobe products. Also, I create my own artwork so the libraries in cricut and scan and cut are sort of superfluous. Also, I want to cut fabric for embroidery/appliqué. So I was thinking about cricut maker or scan and cut. By the way, you are adorable and filled with great information.

You can also try looking up some newer videos on the Silhouette Cameo 4 since you already do your own designs. Disclosure: I own a Cricut, but have watched videos on the Silhouette and I think their software is for the more experienced designer. But hopefully you will get an answer back soon from May May. 🙂

I am new to cutting. I bought the Brother SNC 125i for the scanning option and wireless option last month. Also, for the automatic blade detection. My intention is to be able to scan in my wallet patterns to get precise cuts vs how I do it now and believe me wallet pieces are a pain to cut when you have a lot of orders. I did a lot of research on the machines but because I am new to cutting machines I still wasn't sure my choice was correct. After watching this video I question my selection. I am going to scan and cut today to see how the brother does what I want it to do. Ohyeah forgot to mention I use CORK Fabric. Hmmmm. I will keep you posted. I am a subscriber now! Thank you.

I have owned 3 different Cricut machines and one Scan and Cut. I prefer the Cricut. My Scan and Cut never worked right and everything I tried to do with it was difficult. I ended up returning it after a 2 month long battle with the dealer. Save yourself a lot of trouble and go with a Cricut. I upgraded to an Explore Air 2 and I am in love with it. The versatility it has verses the Explore is mind blowing. I am giving my old explore to my daughter and granddaughter. They are excited about that.

I've owned the Brother ScanNCut2 for about 3 or 4 years now and recently ran into the issue of it not being able to cut complicated SVG files which led me to purchasing the Cricut Maker. I wish I would of known the Brother ScanNCut2 converts the SVG files and doesn't actually cut them "as is". If I would of known then what I know now, I would have purchased the Cricut Maker from the get go. 100% agree!!!

You can also make SVGs with the business version of the Silhouette Studio software - the other versions don't allow saving in that format. I would recommend SCAL or that if your machine uses compatible files. There are also art apps for the iPad that can be handy, some save as SVGs, some don't but the top two are Procreate and Concepts. Two totally different apps but I use them in different ways anyway! BTW I give out links to my designs for free, with my videos.

You are very through and easy to understand. I am very undecided as to which machine I should buy. I have the Scan N Cut 350 which I realize is outdated. I never used it much, but when I did, it was nice. I have now decided that I would like to purchase either the Cricut Maker or one of the newer Brother Scan N Cuts. So, here is my problem, I want to start using vinyls and being to put them on clothes, etc. and possibly doing other crafts. I like the Brother because I am not one to fussy cut. I also feel that the Brother is easier to understand. I do not know if the Scan N Cut can do the vinyls and other things that the Maker can do. I guess, I just want a machine that can fussy cut, etc. and also a machine that can do other crafts like putting stickers on things and being able to put decals or whatever on clothes, etc. So, if you could help me, I would surely appreciate it. I have been doing a little research on both machines but I have no idea as to which one I should buy. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sandy, hello. It sounds like we have similar interests. Any luck? I am new to cutting machines, longtime crafter, recently became disabled and am looking for a little help, and a machine that is versatile. Some videos I have seen say that after upgrading folks still love their older brothers like your 350, the 650 I think.. and from what I have read if only comparing the newer DX series the 225 is much better than the 125, and as of last week they released a newer version of 225. The 225F which after reading all specs seems the main change is that is comes with a fabric specific mat and piece of fabric for first project vs scrap book paper. I also see on Brother website 2021 product release page (items available to brother dealers/sewing machine shops) etc. some new vinyl specific blades for that.. anyhow, I hope you found what you were looking for!

Came across this video because I'm in the market for a new machine. Thanks for sharing you have some great tips. I thought it was funny that you mentioned not buying it as a gift. I've done that in the past and asked the person if they used it and they said they hadn't gotten around to it. At that point, I was like they really don't share the same passion for the craft lol.

Great video! Questions about the Scan n Cut 2... 1) Will it cut stiff felt? 2) Can I use it to cut out labels for a clamshell package for a product we sell? (Can I put in a sheet of several of the printed labels and have the machine cut them out for me?)

Thanks for doing this video. You stressed when you buy a machine take it out of the box & use it. I didn’t. I bought a Cricut Maker, but didn’t use it for a couple years. When I did, it wouldn’t turn on. Thankfully I was able to exchange it. Yes, there is a learning curve. Most of what I’ve learned has been from KZbin videos. Now I can see all the possibilities this machine has. Keep doing videos. Maybe other people will get theirs out of the box & use them.

Thank you for the information. I am doing some research on which cutting machine to buy. I am a sewist and a crocheter. Those are my 2 crafts that keep me happy. I never really thought about a cutting machine until I got one of the sales flyers from JoAnn Fabrics. They are having a sale on the Cricuts. Before seeing this, I was leaning towards the Brother Scan and Cut, but now I might get the Cricut Maker. So much to decide.

Great points Maymay, the best and most honest review I’ve seen yet! I suggest to anyone who really wants to get the most out of any of the major brands machines, purchase and learn to use a vector software program. You’ll be able to use any choice to it’s fullest potential with vector software. I’ve high end software, but SCAL is a perfect choice. I totally agree with Maymay that the Cricut Maker is best for thicker materials and the bomb for fabric!, but love my SNC for direct cutting of stamped images.

If it wasn't for Circut subscription in order to just use it I would totally get the circut. It's hard to justify a yearly fee of 100+ just to use the circut and as I understand it that is the case. Now when you buy the brother you can use the software for free per my research. I'm still looking into both these machines and that is why I'm leaning towards the brother. Circuit would get a lot more people buying it if it wasnt for the software price. I would have bought one yesterday if it wasn't for the software subscription.

Etc. also a fair amount of 2mm or less chipboard, card stock, and super thin acetate. I have a brand new 2020 MacBook Air and the latest Ipro. I think the Cricut Maker 3 is the way to go. Greetings Maymay, I have been advised by my friend to purchase a brother scan and cut. Now the materials I will be using most often is Kraft Tex and leather. I make earrings out of both however, Kraft Tex mostly because I print saying on it. Most of the earrings work well in my circle punches. But sometimes I will do a special order for a business. For instance I just finished an order and the logo did not work well in a circle and was more of a rectangle shape with rounded corners which I cut by hand. So my question is, would I be able to program the machine to cut out the rectangle or other shapes perfectly? I glue two pieces together so the sayings, pictures or logo are on both sides. Thank you for your time. Peace/Joy Evelyn

Thanks for video! I have a Cricut Explorer Air 2, Gemini Jr and many manual die machines. I am trying to decide if I need a Brother Scan & cut because I have a ton of stamps. What are you thoughts?

I would like your opinion on which machine I should buy. I do want to make larger than 24” vinyl and stencils. I would also like to cut 1/4” wood. Right now I cut tiny wood objects with my scroll saw😳. I don’t have any internet issues at all. Do you think you would provide any scan and cut tutorials in the future?

Hey! I'm looking to primarily do two things with a cutting machine. I have custom designs for cards that I would like to cut out, and I would also like to cut fabric for quilts. I am drawn to the Brother because it cuts out images pretty precisely with the scan feature, but not so great for the fabric cutting. It is my understanding cricut Maker is difficult to work with if you have your own drawings because the software isn't great for custom designs. Hoping you can let me know which one you think would be best, but i'm leaning towards both haha!

If you were a Bible Journal crazy lady and printed a lot of stickers, which would you buy. I have the Cricut and feel like a waste a lot of paper with the Print Then Cut option. I am thinking I should have gotten the Scan and Cut. Am I missing something that the Cricut can do? A way that I can print a whole page of stickers and have the Cricut just cut out what I printed?

Maymay I'm new to the electronic cutting realm. I make tumblers and only need it to cut stencils for peekaboo style tumblers and cutting permanent vinyl for decals. Should I go with the scan and cut or a simpler one like the cricket Joy?

Hey MayMay. I started on a mini cricut about 8 or 9 years ago. Upgraded to an expression (still have my expression) I mostly cut vinyl and paper. I really need to upgrade. What happens to my cartridges that I've collected over the years? I love my Mickey mouse one and my Pixar favs. If I upgrade, would I have to buy them again to use online or how does that work? I want to upgrade so bad but I don't know what one to get. The maker looks cool but I'm really not sure if I need all the extras.

Thank you for this video. Question.. I'm a quilter, so fabric is my thing. Considering a scan & cut dx. One thing I want it for is to copy and cut images from magazines, to applique. I think the dx 125 would work for that without having to go up to the dx 225. Would you agree? I will research the circuit maker also. Haven't looked at them. I have a circuit expression, got from my daughter, I'm trying to get familiar with. It just won't do some things I want to do. Thanks again.

Thank you for your insight❤ I do have a Cricut question...I have an older model, Explore One. My original DS usage was on an old computer that is on it's way out. When I have attempted to find DS on the Windows 10 HP that I purchased last year, there is no Microsoft app available for Design Space. Is there another software or location to be able to access DS for the newer pc? Thank you for your time;)

I only need a machine for scrapbooking oodles of pictures (back to the 60’s)! I bought a used Cricut Expression & 11 cartridges. I’m very interested in learning more about the SnC & will re-sale my Expressions (yes, plural). Btw, one is updated & the other isn’t I also have a gypsy (got two great bundles on eBay). I’m Leary of updating the one that isn’t because I’ve read where there have been many problems with the Gypsy, but it “needs updating” for one machine but will update the other. I don’t want to mess things up but it’s gots a bunch of files in it!

I don’t know if you will even see this but I’m thinking about getting a scan n cut what is your opinion? All I will be using it for if fussy cutting? Reason being I love using cute cut outs for making JENOFEVE albums and I’ve had a bilateral carpal tunnel release and fussy cutting is hard on my hands.

I am looking for machine to make my cards. I do mainly greeting cards and special Christmas cards. I would like to make pop up cards this year and need a cutting machine I can scan on my sample card. I used a cricket and liked it fine just not in a financial position to belong to a monthly membership. I am a senior and on a fixed income. I do little with fabric mainly beautiful paper and would like to also work with pattered paper.I liked your class on the different machines.

Hey MayMay, Help me out for a minute please? I make leather bracelets and keychains, right now I cut them out by hand, then I deboss them using a punch stamp set with initials or names, and then add the hardware aka snaps or a ring and double cap. I want a machine to foil the initials or names on my bracelets and keychains. I hate making so much noise hitting the punch stamps one letter at a time at a craft show. I get those "I'm so glad you're here and I love you so much" glares from the other crafters from the ambiance I create for them. I have to turn people away because of my turtle speed. I have seen the foil quill and I am eyeing it up along with a cutting machine. What do you suggest? Do both machines come with an alphabet or will that be an extra purchase?

Hello. I’m so glad I came across this video! I’ve been going back and forth about getting a cutting machine but have no idea where to start. My craft is hand painting wooden signs. I want to branch out with stencils for the ease and saving time instead of the long process I use now. However I really want to know your opinion on getting a machine and using vinyls for stencils or just using the vinyl letters instead of painting. Please help! Thank you!
