Here's a bit of background as to why the Miami Open left Key Biscayne: Crandon Park Tennis Center is in Crandon Park, which is a large area in Key Biscayne, which is just across a bridge from downtown Miami. The land was originally owned by Johm Matheson, a wealthy businessman who was one of the founding fathers of Miami. His heirs donated the Crandon Park land to the city with condition that there could be no construction on the land higher than the tree line. The Crandon Park tennis center was then developed with no permenant structures higher than the treeline. When the Miami Open began in the mid 80s under the Lipton banner, the stadium court needed to be expanded to accommodate high attendance demand, and the solution was to build much of the stadium as a temporary structure that would be dismantled at the end of the tournament. This went on for decades without complaint by the city, attendees, or the Matheson family heirs. There came a point in the mid 2000s where the ATP began asking the Miami Open to modernize and upgrade their facilities and increase their stadium capacity. Being limited by the Matheson family's conditions on Crandon Park, the tournament and the city decided to put the issue up for consideration on the ballot as a referendum. The vote came up a winner for the tournament, as Miami residents voted to protect the tournament they cherished so much. Before building could commence, the Matheson family sued the city for breach of contract and the courts sided with the Mathesons. So now, the ATP could not be appeased, and the threat of moving the tournament was becoming a reality. Enter Stephan Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins. Not wanting to lose the tournament to another city, he offered a hail mary solution and proposed the tournament be moved to the site of Hard Rock Stadium (where the Dolphins play). This allowed facilities to comply with ATP demands, keep the tournament in Miami, and demonstrate that the Hard Rock Stadium area could be used for events outside of football and concerts. Bottom line is that it wasn't James Blake or anyone else who wanted the tournament out of Key Bisnaye, it was the ATP and circumstances outside the control of tournament organizers.

I’m from Cincinnati. The location of the masters tournament is a bit odd and removed from the city, but it brings out dedicated fans and we love to support the tournament. I recommend checking it out, Mark. Plus it’s not that far from Milwaukee.

@@MarkSansait My family still lives in Cincinnati, but I moved to North Carolina. Was regretting missing out on the Djokovic vs Alcaraz final last year! At least at UNC, I was able to talk to our undergrad women's player who made it through Qualis to play Round 1 of the US Open. I so want to ask to hit with her and get destroyed!

Also a native Cincinnati, such a great tourney. Just got moved up to a 2 week event, constant improvement to the grounds, and very passionate fans. Was at the the Zverev v. Joker match last year. One of the best parts for me growing up in Cincy.

sounds like you need to come to canada open too ;) and compare 1000 ATP tounreys. agreed though. after attending IW 2019. i compare every tournament to that place and its tough to match. didnt mention here mark but you can easily pay 30 dollars USD for a grounds pass to IW and itll get you the best value for any tennis experience almost.

Thanks for the comparison, Mark. I go to Indian Wells every year if possible, and I can tell you they really stepped up the shopping experience this year. I normally would never shop at a tennis tournament, but was looking for somewhere to escape the RAIN during the first round and was very impressed with the selection from all the major name brands. It far surpassed the Fila star from years past.

Went to Miami Open this year. Totally agree about the Stadium Court. Bought tickets in there one night for an Alcaraz match and ending up leaving pretty quickly - that place sucked. Went over to court 1 and caught the Evans/Eubanks match which was infinitely more enjoyable. Would never buy a Stadium Court ticket in there again but I will say the Grandstand viewing experience was decent. Also had some similar experiences with completely uninterested/rude staff on the grounds which was off-putting. And yeah, the parking & rideshare dropoff/pickup is terrible.
