Hardwood mulch is fine for garden beds away from the house, but why should you Only use cedar around the house?
Do you buy your mulch in bulk like me? Buy this shovel and thank me later

Started mulching a family friends yard and they had been using hardwood around the house. Had to do some exterminating. Now it’s all cedar, looks great.

You seem like a smart guy. I'm getting my hands into conservation gardening, which basically says "up yours" to popular landscaping. (No stock plants, no cultivars, no chemicals) This approach is much more difficult; retail growers still know things I don't and I want to interact with them in a way that educates them and helps me. But on the subject of mulch I'll just have to use leaves because I can't educate myself on commercial mulches enough to say if they're environmentally friendly or not. Let's say a viewer has to choose between pine mulch that comes in nuggets, a farmer who uses the compost he rakes off of his own land, and a guy who says plastic is a kind of mulch. There aren't any common facts to understand it, the questions are just too hard to put in words so it's simpler to just use the first thing that works.

I would say any mulch "not dyed" is environmentally friendly. I mean it is process through a diesel powered chipper, but everything you buy at the store arrives on a diesel powered truck. If you are looking for a very natural, fast decaying mulch, contact your local tree company for chips. Often times tree companies have trouble finding places to accept their chips. Most of the time, they give the chips away for free. I think that wood chips will offer 3 times the weed protection over leaves.

Landscaper here. Canada Red Cedar Mulch runs $65 per yard, plus tax. The only time i don't use this mulch is when people ask for black mulch, which i try to talk them out of, but i will install. Any other colour requests, mean another landscaper....lol...

Thx. Appreciate review. Too many ants here so need some natural deterrent.

You have a trailer. You can rent a wood chipper and make your own mulch with trees/branches from your yard. Talk to tree service companies and they may actually give you cedar trees that they cut down for customers. Just be willing to go pick it up in your trailer and chip it yourself. You can sell mulch and deliver it for customers as a side hustle.

Thanks for the comment. What you are saying is financially impractical. Renting a chipper would cost 2-400 bucks a day. I can purchase a yard of brown mulch for 10 bucks a yard. Doesn't make sense for me to make my own. Also, wood chips and mulch are slightly different materials.

Im torn. I love the smell of cedar mulch and at first hearing it repels bugs I thought that was great because I hate using chemicals too, but then That means it also repels pollinators, which is the opposite of what I want to do. I dont know what to do now.

You could apply cedar much for the first 2' away from the foundation, then switch to a hardwood. The best of both worlds.
@randyt3558
@randyt3558 Жыл бұрын
Its doesn't repel all bugs, it's not magic. Pollinators are too busy to even notice the smell, so don't worry, and use cedar. The mulch is there for you and your garden. All you need to attract pollinators is flowers.

I get 15 yards of hardwood for $20/yd. free delivery, and spray for insects/mosquitoes monthly. Cedar is $50/yd. that's too expensive for the little advantages.

Is cedar mulch the same as cypress?
@padraics
@padraics 2 жыл бұрын
No, though it can look similar in shape when muoch. I have seen people try to "cut" cedar with Cypress, as it's cheaper, and people sell one as the other. Cypress is more of a light to medium brown color, and generally considered to degrade faster and not repel insects.
