Which of these overpriced Sailor pens is more overpriced? Imperial Black vs. Black Luster

I actually like the fact that the Black Luster is heavier. It provides a unique experience in Sailors lineup because they don’t use the metal section very often. Because of this, the feel is completely different. Now I need to find an Imperial Black because I like the idea that it feels different as well due to the matte finished material. the mark up on the 1911 L black lister is honestly ridiculous, you can get the usual rt or gt 1911L with the smaller version. But I have to say that black luster looks really good which was why I was looking into it, but I think if youre going to get it, better get it on the Cylint model. They have a brass patina version and the other is stainless steel , black resin and black luster trims. They look like pro gear models, and I don't know if some people prefer their pen lighter, but I always like the weight of the full metal ones. I wish the difference was at most $50 or something on the black buster and make it available to all the pro gear and 1911 models too.

I have several Sailor pens, and they all perform well, but I agree that they are generally overpriced for what you get. I purchased all of them pre-owned.

I agree, the imperial black has such a lovely tactile feel opening and closing etc. and is very much like my sound of rain pgs. My imperial black nib was also like your first, poorly tuned and scratches paper fibers on some strokes. But in general it was passable. Whoever I sold it to, I hope they were ok with it!

The prices of higher end pens has reached "gouge" proportions over the last few years, IMO. I wonder if the bubble will burst .

It was 1911 all the way for me until I tried it. I agree with you - not a fan of the heavier feel! I don't own either but will look into the Pro Gear

I have a bunch of Sailor pens from the 00s and early 10s. They have considerably gone up in price since.

The only reason I bought the imperial black was I got it for sale from pensashi a couple years ago. That said.... It has been my experience across the board that, large or small, the 1911s always write dry to almost not flowing and the pro gears are wet to gushing. Anyone have that experience?

Old comment but I've only used slims and regular Pro Gears. The slims definitely write a bit drier but mine's always had good flow. the 14k nibs tends to dry out a lot faster than the 21k models.

@@graciousideals1509 thank you for your response. I've got an extra fine pro gear slim that writes wetter than my fine and medium fine 1911s's. The fine 1911s is so bad I can only use certain inks in it. The same goes for a 1911L medium I have. I guess I just got the unlucky draw of the nibs. All my pro gears big or small are decent to wet writers with the same inks. Thank you for answering. First world problems that keep you up at night lol 🤷

until a few days ago (i've been monitoring bc almost bought one) the standard pro gear with rhodium trim has been available on amazon for $125 (which i actually think is very reasonable)

I bought one for about $118 for the F, buy it you can return it if you dont like it. It was bi-tone nib and my first real sailor only had a cheap fude before. I just ordered a Sailor 1911L F black rhodium for $135. Amazon has some deals. My only knock on a the PG standards is that they are short in my hands unposted. The Large is only slightly larger so even on this purchase its usually 165ish vs a 1911s at 125mark. I have not tried a 14k nib. I really do like the pencil feel of the 21K. PG is fine and wet with Shikori Miruai which im told is drier. They dont come with cartridges converters and the CC you can get is small Think con40 fill size, so Im not buying another converter and will use the refills I ordered and a syringe later. I love sailor colors but not worth paying more for a 14K special edition vs 21K nib. I really want the Moroccan Mint tea 14k. But it is 14K a PG slim and not the best fit for my hands. Lets be real, any pen over 100 is a luxury not an investment and it may give a special writing experience. Pilot by for me has the most consistent nibs 8 gold nib pilots bought in the last year. Their steel nibs are really good also and allow easy swapping between models.

Your criticism of American retail pricing is valid, but says nothing about the Sailor brand. And your 'denunciation' is not based on facts only, it appears. The Pilot 74 has a 14K nib and hence not equal to the 1911 with a 21K. I happen to have bought a 1911 black luster from a Japanese website one month ago for 150 dollars, plus shipping.

I am also dissapointed about sailor. I have a Pro Gear KOP and it's my worst pen. Disclosure. I am in this hobby for only 3 months and a lefty. I assembled 13 pens, all new, over the whole price spectrum up to the sailor, which is the worst pen. I may not know what to look for. As a European I grew with fp though. I wont do sailor again. Btw. Best writer for me is the pilot vanishing point and then the dialog cc. Even thr Safari writes way better than this sailor.

not sure it’s fair to compare the Pilot custom 74 with it’s European no.5 sized nib to either Sailor pen with their European no.6 sized nibs:)

Pro Gear was the lesser price pen when introduced. I still think the 1911L is the better pen. The nibs should be the same regardless of the model. I think the 1911L has better quality. Now if you compare the Pro Gear KoP versus the standard KoP, is there any comparison?

Overpriced as in their value compaired to their competition. These pens are overpriced, and that is reflected by these pens not being favored by the market. Using comparisons to other overpriced items as evidence for otherwise doesn't work. Sure, the true value of an item is in the perception of it's buyers but this is a video about their objective value and nothing about subjectivity.

@@MachineYearningDefinitely. It‘s resin (plastic) with a bit of stainless steel or, if you’re lucky, a bit of gold. The profit margins are huge.

I did not like the video too. But not because of persons opinion about price. $40 is the top price for all these pens anyway... however, when reviewer is asking a question about pen "which one is..." but ends up talking about "feels... I feel... feel... I feel..." Well, so much of a review 😂
