I tend to take mechanical pencils to work. I usually will have one fountain pen inked up and use it until it’s dry. I also carry a rollerball.

This is the single best fountain pen video I’ve ever seen. It introduced me to multiple pens that I had never heard of and peaked my interest. I would get the pilot Lucina but I’m having trouble finding one in the states. I do however plan on purchasing the pilot 1911 casual. I can’t find any other reviews on it so it’s great that you’re spreading awareness about such a great deal! Keep up the great work 👍

Surprisingly enough I had more quality control and consistency problems with Pilot rather than any of my Platinum pens. Platinum usually never dries out and the line is consistent with any ink at any direction. Custom 74 on the other hand is known to have flow issues with upstrokes while downstrokes are quite wet. Also most of my Pilot pens has tines way too tight from the factory and require some nib massaging before being good. I also had 3 different Pilot VP and all of them had singing nibs. Platinum and Sailor nibs are usually great from the factory.

i really like lamy Fountain Pens. But what i hate about them is, that even EF nibs are something like B on Kaweco or japanese pens.. And they vary a lot with line thickness from EF nib to EF nib

I recently received this seems. It seems that the cabochon (jewel) is loose, as well. Seems to just be a part of the pen’s design. Have you noticed if this being loose allows air through the top? Does the nib dry quicker than other Pilot’s?

Yours is one of only a handful of reviews for this pen which helped me make up my mind on this pen. I’ve managed to bag the last one on a site in europe at reduced price. I can’t seem to find it anywhere else so not sure if it’s been discontinued. Thanks

If this pen took the con-70 converter, it would easily be my favorite. The nib is simply is fantastic. I am no fan at all of the custom 74, I guess we all have our favorites, and my favorites all have steel nibs. Have used steel nibs for over 50 years at this point, and the only gold nib I care for is the one in the Waterman Carene. That nib is done right imo. Thanks for sharing. Jan.

As many others in the comments 😅 I also have all three. My comparison is not to easy as the my sailor is fine, the platinum is extra fine and the pilot soft fine, so they have not exactly the same purposes for me. Anyhow, it is the 3776 that I am reaching out for the most. Smooth as butter.

I had a silver Metropolitan, but gifted it to a family member. My biggest issues of the Metropolitan are the uncomfortable grip section, and the unbalanced posting experience. For a starter Pilot, besides the Kakuno, my number one option is either Pilot Prera, or the Explorer. I also like my Lamy Safari a lot, because it solves both the issues of grip comfort and balance while posted, and the Z24 converter is WAY better than the Con-40.

Lots of really good pens are made in Slovenia, the Faber Castell Hexo is made there too. That being said, from a company like Midori I would have expected more, couldn't they partner with a Japanese company like Platinum to make a pimped out Plaisir for their brand?

And, for about a quarter of the price, including shipping, you can get a highly reliable, well made, dip-tested Jinhao 82 with converter. For brushed steel with plastic, Wing Sung delivers the goods for way less than this "Midori". I've had to perform corrective surgery on one of my 601As, but the filling system is so much more interesting.

I have exactly the same problem than you with the 74. I like this pen but my fingers are always grabbing the threads. Reason why I almost always use my 823 instead. The 74 is a very good pen but not when you have larger hands.

I respectfully disagree with your comment about the Lamy steel nib. Firstly, there is a difference between the silver and black ones. I always use the black ones, they write smoother than the white ones. I put a 14kt nib on a Lamy LX. It does not write smoother than the black one, but it is less stiff than the black steel ones. There is little flex possible, but that doesn't matter to me as I prefer a stiff nib. Is it worth the investment? Depends what your preference is. My Lamy LX has now become a beautiful pen to look at, but I prefer to write with a black steel nib.

I have had the pen for a year and have given it once as a gift. Mine and the gift wrote well out of the box. It has a little feedback and is very stiff but a perfectly serviceable plastic pen. The body does feel cheap but it has held up so far. I do not carry it as an everyday carry. Ink wise, it does not like dry inks and shimmer was a nightmare. But a good normal to wet ink with or without sheen and it is fine. As the convertor gets close to empty it will have hard starts but that is the only time I have experienced that when using a wet ink. I agree, the silver ring is a pain to keep track of when cleaning.

I got one last year for CAD $ 50, I dropped it from my table and the plastic broke. Not impressed. I bought it because its Midori and because of its minimalistic looks., but would not recommend. I did like the "very Japanese style" packaging,. Fancy marketing got me again 😂

FYI: Another reviewer on KZbin does a better 'historical' development of the Lamy Scala fountain pen. The pen was designed by the same person who is the designer/architect of the 'Dornbracht' faucets in Germany. It is not, as you suggest, like something in a cosmetic aisle.....and the pen's price is irrelevant. I have Sailor pens (over $200.00) and their plastic bodies are just awful in comparison to the steel body of the Lamy. I happen to like steel body pens....and slip caps are great!!!!

The absolute weirdest thing about this to me is that Midori MD Paper and Traveler's are both under the Designphil parent company. I haven't personally used it, but I was under the impression that the Traveler's Brass Pen has good build quality and is a good overall value. But that means they already have connections to make *good* fountain pens, why did they go this route to create an overpriced bad one? I love all of their paper products, from the paper itself to the aesthetics. I can't understand what need they thought this pen could fill.
@TymberJ
@TymberJ Ай бұрын
This is just so strange -- their promotional video for the MD Fountain Pen (on youtube and their website) literally begins with someone having to strain to uncap it. And the conclusion of the video when they cap it also clearly takes a lot of effort. And while they show the clip in use of a shirt pocket, there's a subtle but telling cut so that you don't actually see the point in time when the fabric goes under the clip. I'm guessing they got an unhappy surprise due to COVID supply chain issues and/or manufacturer that overpromised they quality they could deliver, and this is just trying the best they can with what they know is a disappointing product that *had* to be available at the same time as their other 15th Anniversary products.

This pen exists so that when youre in a midori store in japan or wherever and you are buying paper and etc you can also pick up a pen that is made by the same people. And then quickly stop using it and never use it again.

The dip pen version is also disappointing (I have both). Build quality is a bit better with the same nib but the body finish is very hard to clean and the nib holding part is not really stainless steel so it eventually gets rusted.

I might have you beat with the weird Temu pen I got last week. The brand name is Babeli. I think it might be Nigerian??? Anyhow, I flush my pens before using. The converter wouldn't come out. Huh. Maybe I have to unscrew it? Nope. It's GLUED. in. When you turn it, the nib and feed turn with it. The #3 or #4 nib (definitely not a #5) is in a nib unit. This nib unit sits a couple of mm below the section. It's a beautiful blue galaxy colour and that little nib does write nice. I'm not going to send it back, even if I should. It looks easy to fix if it does break. But, OMG what a weird little pen....I should check the barrel for a message from a Nigerian prince who can't access his bank account.

It’s a bummer to see Midori miss the mark on this one. For around 30 dollars, my number one go-to pen is my JDM Pilot Prera with a medium nib, in slate grey to complement a wider variety of inks. This 20-30ish US dollar price point is such a competitive category (add in the Diplomat Magnum, Kaweco Sport, Sailor Profit Junior, and Twsbi Swipe) that mediocre offerings from Midori or Parker simply don’t cut it anymore.

I have used Schmidt nibs recently and have found them to be excellent steel nibs. None of them curve downward. I think it is made to write drier, supporting the claim it can write on any paper. Also the Schmidt nibs I have were perfectly tuned from the start. As far as the body construction goes, I am saddened by the poor construction. Clearly this is not up to standards I expect. If it was made by me, I would be impressed but for Japan, meh. The converter may also be made by Schmidt. I mean I have a Pilot Petit 1 that is better made and was about a third of the price. As it is been said, you pay your money and you take your chances. Nice review.

I think Lamy CP1 is a great pen that shares the same lineage as Lamy 2000. Hooded nibs don’t do much for me though. If slender pens are not for someone, it’s fine. They can choose a thicker pen. However, that doesn’t take away from how minimalistic and neat this pen is. I would have to disagree with you on the balance of the pen in hand. I have mine in extra fine nib and feels great to write with, even during long writing sessions. At the same time, some folks might find it too plain for the price. It’s understandable. I like it’s plain design and it works well in settings where you don’t want undue attention. That said, I enjoy my CP1 like many others. To each his own. Cheers! 👍🏼

I splurged and bought the Sailor Hiroshima Commemorative pen made with juniper wood. It was limited to 500 pens worldwide with only 70 allocated to the US market. It cost almost an astonishing $1000! I think it’s a very beautiful pen and uncommon looking as well, but honestly, as far as writing capability, there is no way to justify its excessive cost. It no doubt writes like any Sailor pen with a 21 karat gold nib in medium. What you are paying for is style. And in the case of my almost $1000 pen its limited edition may have some value. So my comments very much apply to the two Sailor pens discussed in this video. It makes little sense to compare the writing. It makes much more sense to compare the style. Personally, I can’t see anything special about either style. I would be looking for pens with much more interesting styles in those price ranges.
