Steve, at Gamers Nexus, did an overclocking video with the Vega 56, where he matched the clocks on a Vega 56 to the clocks on an otherwise identical Vega 64 card, and the performance was nearly the same. The extra shaders of the Vega 64 made almost no difference, whatsoever. In another video, he did a super overclock of a Vega 56, where he used liquid cooling, and completely disabled the power controls on the card, and got it to where it was consuming something like 420W of power, and was running frames equal to a RTX 2070, showing that Vega was capable of a lot more than what AMD released it with. I've seen people getting really good results overclocking the Vega Frontier cards, as well. AMD left a lot of performance off the table, to get Vega down to a power consumption level that consumers would find acceptable. If the cards required a 1000W power supply, in 2017, they wouldn't have sold very many. Even today, it's a struggle for most people to justify a video card that consumes more than 400W of power.

Perhaps the most overcloackable and tunable GPUS. The crypto miners explopred it capabilitys because it was so good at mining. We'd prefer the 56 and turn down the GPU speed whilst turning up the VRAM speed. Saves power and mines faster. For games you'd clock up the GPU speed too.

You forgot to mention while the RX Vega 56 isn't supported officially by AMD anymore, there are community developed drivers for it that might have better performances than the official driver. I used RX Vega 56 in my PC right now and I think I'll use this card until I can get a better replacement or a better resolution screen. This card can still game at Full HD with ease and I don't really mind about graphics so it might serves me for a long time

I did, although it was towards the end of the video. I will get around to testing the NimeZ drivers at some point on a variety of older Radeon cards as well. Nevertheless, I think it’s a shame that AMD is dropping support for Vega. Like you said, it’s still solid at 1080p.

@CaptainKenway

It's completely inaccurate to say that Vega is no longer officially supported. It absolutely is. The tech media misinformation campaign about AMD dropping Vega driver support started in October, yet the most recent Vega driver is from late January. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out that timeline. The only thing it's not getting any more is 'game ready' driver updates - but then neither are Nvidia cards from that era in reality. Does anybody SERIOUSLY believe that Nvidia are hard at work optimizing the latest games for Pascal? Or even Turing for that matter? Fastidiously updating your drivers for something like a GTX 1070 every time a new one comes out is a complete waste of time unless there's a specific bug affecting you being fixed and listed in the release notes (which will also happen for Vega). If anything, it's more likely to cause problems than solve them. In fact, there's a content idea for some KZbinr - test a variety of games from the past few years on a Pascal card using a selection of drivers from the past few years and see how much improvement there's been during that time. My prediction is diddly squat on average.

Good content for the comparisons. Consider the Vega 56 is 106% the performance of the 1070 according to Techpowerup, it's surprising to see the 1070 beat the Vega 56 on a few titles in terms of average FPS with less power consumption. Also the 1070 is identical to the newer and more power efficient 1660 Super in terms of performance.

One of my four pcs still runs my vega 56, with a 64 bios a good oc and a Morpheus 2 cooler. In my head its still a good gaming gpu while the 1070 which i gave away isn't lol. But this is because i couldn't do anything with the 1070 unlike the vega56. Yea you can mod the 1070 but it needs a soldering iron and a knowledge of schematics lol. Saying that, i'd never give my vega56 away as they would think its broken or something as its vega, hence another reason why i gave away the 1070 as it just works. Not saying vega does not work. But we all know what happens when someone has an amd issue, reddit lights up.
@da1punisher

This is the way. Being able to run the Vega 64 bios on some models, is why it's a better pick for an ultra budget gamer than the 1070. CUDA isn't a real factor IMO, because if you NEED it for a "time is money" workflow, a 1070 isn't what your shopping for. Drivers are a wash too. Nvidia may technically still support cards back to Maxwell 2.0 but it doesn't mean they spend anytime on optimizations for them. Iceberg Tech shows both Halo Infinite and Guardians of the Galaxy are broken with newer drivers and you have to revert to old ones to get the games working properly. It's a marketing tactic to keep mindshare. Besides, community drivers for old AMD cards is a thing.

It's an 8GB GPU which means it has enough VRAM. It can also have that extended in the driver using system RAM which can help in titles such as Warzone. People still use the RX 580 8GB and this has nearly double that performance.

While its true that Vega 56bis unsupported by AMD just recently, NimeZ drivers still churn modded drivers for it. So I wouldnt count Vega 56 out of the game just yet. Plus regarding power consumption, you can always undervolt it so it consumes less energy. Ramping up the HBM2 clock works wonders and gets more FPS than a core overclock. Vega 56bis not for everyone, but tweakers and enthusiasts will get more value from it.

I'm pretty sure you have to find a card that uses Samsung VRAM, to be able to get a decent overclock. If the card uses some other brand, they aren't so flexible when it comes to overclocking. I've seen cards with Samsung VRAM overclocked to 950mhz, and that's the highest overcock I've seen on any Vega 56 VRAM.

You can undervolt them, and not lose much performance. I think a 20% undervolt, only results in a 5% loss in performance, but then you can overclock them and get some of that back. I don't know why AMD wasn't tighter with their power controls. They probably could have cut 20-25W from the rated TDP, and sold more of them. Better tuning doesn't even cost any money to do.

All decent GPUs use a lot of power. The R9 290 uses more. The RTX 3090 uses more. Some use less but they're newer or have less performance. As long as your PSU has two separate PCIe 8 way cables it will be fine. The cooling on the blower cards is good but at full chat can be heard unless you're playing Forza and then your engine is louder.

Geforce Pascal architecture (which I love and own in GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti) is an old derivate (and so is the RTX Pascal refresh 2000 series) of the previous ones. That's why it tends to perform better in games that use older graphic engines. RX Vega is a heavily parallel architecture and thus loves modern game engines and performs much better in modern games than the Pascal series. Fortnite = Unreal Engine 4 developed in 2013 Cyberpunk 2077 = Red Engine 4 developed in 2010/2011

@@gamewizard1760 why buttercup ? Because you feel that my statement is wrong ? Facts are that the RTX 2000 series is a Pascal refresh with around 10 % more CUDA cores, lower clocks, higher PWR consumption and exactly the same memory mappings, exactly the same GPU frequency algorithms, exactly the same memory configuration, exactly the same memory quantities per TIER and exactly the same utilisation acting in games.
