A little known secret, you can get an RX 470 8 GB mining edition for 20 or 30€ (the ones with no output ports), miners are just throwing them away because nobody buys a card with no connectors and CeX does not accept them, but they all have an hidden HDMI port inside that you can easily solder back on, or if you don't want any trouble, just simply use the CPU iGPU output port on your motherboard, it works just fine...

The entire reason I chose my RX480 8gb in Jan 2020 was for the 8gb of VRAM. The 2gb of VRAM was holding my GTX950 back in nearly every game, and I knew I didn't want to fuss with things for a long time. I think I chose quite well considering I was able to get it for only $100 used, and I'm still using it with no real plan of upgrading.

Same for me with my $155 new RX 570 8GB in mid 2020. But to be fair, it was the only choice that made sense. Nvidia had the 1050ti and 1650 at the same price point. The RX 580 and 590 cost a bit more for not much more performance and the 1650 Super 4GB cost around $300 (Nvidia fail). Very happy with the 570 8GB, especially after modding the BIOS and pushing it to RX 580 performance while undervolting for less noise and heat. I've noticed almost every AAA game newer than 2016 will use between 4 and 5GB of VRAM when maxed out. RE Village goes up to 7.7GB. If you ask me, cards with less than 8GB of VRAM stopped making sense 3 years ago already.

As an RX 6600 owner, I recommend it. It was a birthday gift from a good friend. I don’t play a lot of games, nor very demanding ones, Doom 2016 on occasion, some Minecraft, way too much War Thunder, the Master Chief Collection from time to time. But the way it maxes out each game with ease on my 1080p monitor meets my needs and I can say I’m more than satisfied. I plan to keep this card for a while, the only reason I’d consider upgrading is for an eventual RX 7600, if it ever happens, for the supposed AV1 encode RDNA III GPUs are supposed to be capable of, as I like to record a lot of my gameplay, but my internet prevents me from streaming. Unless of course they start stripping encoders again like they did to the RX 6500...

The thing about more VRAM is that it allows for better/higher texture quality, which usually does not impact performance. So it's essentially a free visual upgrade even if the performance isn't as good. Performance can be improved with lower settings, but losing out on the visual quality at the same time because of lower quality textures even if I could have them without sacrificing performance means I'll have the worst of both worlds. The RX580 8GB is an old card at this point, and performance in newer games is basically a console experience, but games still look nice because of the higher quality textures. I'd rather have that than be forced to upgrade because my game both runs and looks like crap.

For the love of god, the consoles do not have 16gb of vram, it's unified memory that's used for both video and system functions, 13.5gb is reseved for games to use in both, while console games obviously have less and more efficient memory usae due to them being closed platforms that doesn't mean they're allocating a whole ass 10gb out of 13.5 on video leaving only 3.5 for everything else.

VRAM requirements are definitely going up, no question, but one of the best reasons to game on PC is the vast amount of scalability on offer. It’s been like that for over a decade, even on games that were PC only. Graphical presets are a thing and have been a thing for a very long time, and they used to mean something. Now, in games like The Last of Us, turning settings down to Medium results in a muddy mess. A Plague Tale: Requiem (a current gen only title) scales remarkably well with the visual settings, and that studio had less than half the budget and team size. Sure, we’ve had a few Crysis-like games that push the boundaries, and I’d argue it’s good for the industry to have those, but I can’t help but shake this feeling that a lot of studios are just not taking the time to properly scale visuals down appropriately anymore, whether that be due to time constraints or the desire not to. Either way, it’s not the consumers responsibility to brute force system requirements by being forced to spend a grand every couple of years just to be able to get decent performance. For the high end, sure, but for everyone else it’s insane to expect upgrades so fast. If publishers want to raise the price of games (and you’d better believe they will keep pushing for that) then we should expect a premium product that isn’t a buggy, broken mess, requiring 12GBs of VRAM to simply have a game look as good as it did on the PS5 , a console that is vastly out of date already. The Last of Us IS poorly optimized, and side by side comparisons to the console version of the Remake is incredibly sobering just how poorly optimized it is. I find it highly disturbing that so many influential figures in the PC gaming space are using this horribly optimized game as the smoking gun to prove to everyone that we absolutely NEED 16GB VRAM at a minimum, when the reality is that a lot of these PC games, and many PC ports in the past, are just poorly optimized. And of course, in the midst of the “you need 16GB VRAM to run any game in 2023” argument, Dead Island 2 comes out and competently optimized. Yes, a game that has been in development hell for years came out more optimized than one of the most lauded and praised games of the last decade. What a crazy world we live in.

Haven't tried A750 but it sounds like it's pretty good and getting better every day, but the 3050 should not be bought, pretty much for any reason. There are some devs saying that the standard for 1440p is going to become 12gb and it kinda is already on ultra settings. So if you are going to play the newest games yes 8gb is NOT enough. That said, if you are like me and are a cheapskate you will get by on a 2gb 1050 mobile card for a year or 2 until prices come down a bit.

Recently bought an RX 6600 for my first gaming PC for the insane price of around $130. It was an ex mining GPU but only for about 4 months of mining usage. I have been intensively testing it and it has no problems at all. Paired it with my Ryzen 5 4500, and it performs really well. I think i just made the best $400+ gaming PC.

I've just got an EVGA GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 card for about 150 Canadian Dollars used to replace my still decent performing GTX 970 (which I plan on using for a sleeper build this year) for better performance in system intensive emulators and video encoding during rendering videos. And for sub 150 dollars in Canada, the 1070 seems like a huge boost in performance. :)

Pascal was a big efficiency upgrade on Maxwell. I replaced a 770 2GB with a 1060 6GB in 2017 because it outperformed a 970 and was way cheaper than an RX580. In fact if you go like for like out of the box the 1060 doubled the FPS rates of the 960, heck of a good bump was Pascal.
@DarkLinkAD Жыл бұрын
@@darthwiizius The 1060 was never cheaper than the 580. The 580 was cheaper that 1050. The 1060 was really a replacement for the 970 and its price reflected that. Edit: Note the 770 is Kepler, not that you said otherwise though.
@darthwiizius Жыл бұрын
@@DarkLinkAD I know the 770 was Kepler and no the 1060 was the replacement for the 960 not the 970, the 1070 replaced the 970. In 2017 1060 6GBs were going for £180 (Why I bought one) and the RX580s were going for £330 (why I didn't buy one), shoot due to crypto you couldn't even find 570s in 2017 for the price of 1060s because miners didn't want 1060s, so you are totally wrong there too.
@DarkLinkAD Жыл бұрын
@@darthwiizius Again, the price reflected the replacement not the names. The MSRP for a GTX 970 was 329$ and for a 1060 300$, with similar if not the same performance at the time. The 480 however had an msrp of 199$ and could be found for 140$ USD in 2017 and Cheaper in China.

It's even worse than your conclusion suggests: 8GB cards are quickly becoming obsolete as well. If you're buying a new card, I would highly recommend getting 12 or 16GB if you just can. Otherwise you'll be relegated to playing 1080 low or medium settings with new titles. 8GB is fine if you don't plan on playing new games, but that's kind of a niche case. I'd expect you'd want to play new titles with your shiny new card, after all.

A lot of the problems with modern ports could be addressed. Including VRAM. Problem is some of the ports basically use PC hardware as if it has a unified memory architecture and call it a day. The Reason the Deck works so well btw is that it can allocate over 8GB of its memory to VRAM and shares a unified memory architecture as well.

Don't buy an 8GB card unless you intend to stay at 1080p for the foreseeable future. 12GB is the absolute minimum, with 16GB being preferable for 1440p.
@yasu_red Жыл бұрын
The recent 8gb drama is valid, but it's still more than plenty for GPUs at a lower price/performance bracket. My 8gb RX 5700 runs any game I throw at it just fine, and VRAM is rarely a bottleneck for me at 1080p high/ultra even without a lot of tweaks to settings.
@allmonor Жыл бұрын
8gb is perfectly fine for a Rx5700 or a Gtx1080... however, once you get stronger GPUs then that, you will run into bottlenecks with that ram. If the upcoming rtx 4060 for example which should be significantly more powerful then these cards fails to deliver more than 8gb, it will be a huge issue for the card, because it has the power to use much more (we see this on the merely 2 years old 3070 already). This is only amplified by the fact that 1440p or even 4k gaming is becoming the new norm

Idk how it is with other cards but my Vega 56 needed new thermal pads and thermal paste because it would crash every hour or so of usage. I repasted my Gigabyte model with lots of K5 for the thermal pads, and made sure that there was a lot of splooge with the HBM chips and the GPU core. Now it runs at 25 degrees idle and 67 Max with a gaming and transcoding workload. 😊

Undervolt it, and overclock the memory. 100mv less voltage at state 6 and 7 makes it run way cooler, clocking the vram to at least 920mhz gives you better min fps. Both are way within safety margin.

it's honestly so frustrating seeing poor optimization becoming such a ubiquitous trend. the capabilities of current gen hardware is more than enough to run these games and anything else we can throw at them, except we barely get more for our money these days as developers rely on upscaling techniques to mask inefficient pipelines and unrealistic expectations from studios. it creates an environment where people are incentivized to toss their older, perfectly working tech in favor of (inadvertently) supporting rampant consumerism and material shortages. i just want my games to run well man

Watching this months later, but one of main reasons USD price is basically GBP price is the GBP price includes 20% VAT, the USA price does NOT include any of their sales tax. ALthough in their defense sales tax is usually a lot below 20. Also a 2060 12GB is closer to a 2060 super 12GB than a 2060. It's got a lot of improvements from super despite dumb name.

I have recently upgraded from a 2GB GTX 1050 to a GTX 1660 Super with 6GB... You might ask why I didn't spend a little more for a card with 8GB... but I had set myself a limit of 200 €, wanted a Nvidia GPU and honestly... I can also just look in 1 - 2 years what will be available and buy something more fancy. Before the 6GB becomes a problem, the GPU itself will be too slow. I built my system around a 450 watt power supply, so i will always have to pay some attention to power consumption... An RTX 3070 would still be feasible.

ok, so i got a Vega64 for a good deal, it was 110euro, also local, so the shipping fee was only 5euro, and the GPU ran flawlessly for 2weeks, and the gpu started crashing on game engines, and the issue with amd cards is the phase controller if its bad, or just one vrm rail malfunctions in core supplying, the card is unusable! Same with RX 5xxx and 6xxx cards. Nvidia cards VRM rails are made better, cuz if one goes out, and its open circuit then the card is still allive, just the remaining vrm's are loaded a bit more. I have found locally an RX470 for 50eur and i will ask the dude about the phase controller, cuz the VRM issues started appearing when AMD implemented that the card vrm should send the power to the core in series pulse. It was when the R9-200 flagship cards appeared.

It is difficult to be filled with despair when one has an RX 6800 XT with a frame buffer that has 16GB of GDDR6. Having said that, the best value out there for an 8GB card is either the Radeon RX 5700 XT, the Radeon RX 6600 or the Radeon RX 6600 XT. The huge advantage of the GTX 1080 Ti is the 11GB frame buffer. That's even more than the RTX 3080 and with its RX 5700 XT-like performance-level, it will be pretty long-lived when it comes to not being VRAM-crippled. I consider it to be the last TRULY GREAT video card that nVidia ever made.
