Definitely between hybrid A and Stand-up. I stay on my feet most of the time and rarely drop into a butterfly. I'm generally very patient and composed, and stand up well to aggressive shooters. I use my paddle a lot, and rely on my angles to make the save. I'd chalk it up to my size (pretty small for a goalie) and a general lack of control once I'm down.

My dad played nets through the 70s and preached the importance to me of stand up goaltending. He wasn't a literal stand up goalie, but he was insistent on letting the shooter make the first move. But, I like to show someone a bit of net and then take it away. This puts me out of position sometimes and forces me into a more reactionary hybrid B style at times. But I think my old man (and mom) were right -- I'm at my best when I play more of a hybrid A style.

I would probably fit into the hybrid b, when I was younger and getting into hockey I was a big time flopper, that was pretty much the only way I made my saves was basically throwing my body towards the puck. Now I’ve been able to dial things in more, however during scramble situations I still have a tendency for flopping around, maybe for better or for worse.

Hybrid B, I am on the shorter side of the spectrum of goalies around 5'11 or 6' in that area. I have to be patient since I can give away lots of the upper side of the net, at the same time I might need to flop for a rebound since my body is not big enough to reach it.

I'm a TOTAL Hybrid B! Started out in the mid 90's as a stand up goalie. By my college years, I was a flopper... or, as I call it, a "Freestyle" goalie. I didn't look like a fish out of water, but butterfly was not in my repertoire. Get this... (I am now 41 years old and 5'11) I just (literally, 2 weeks ago) upgraded my pads. I started out with Contak 6000 33' (no +1) pads. In 20013, I went to a 32+1 Warrior pad that I was absolutely comfortable in. Because I was nowhere near butterfly, I didn't need a larger pad. Over the last season and a half though, My game evolved naturally and I noticed that I was incorporating some butterfly like movements into my game (namely pad face out vs. pad face down) specifically over this past season. I am now in a pair of CCM ExtremeFlex 3.9's that measure in at a 36+2! When I DO try to butterfly, it is so narrow it could be called anorexic. Looking forward to seeing how these Eflex pads work for me on the ice. (They close the 5 hole nicely in the butterfly in the dining room).

Hybrid B. Grew up a Roy fan and as such ended up rooting myself in butterfly, largely because I was unaware of there being any successful way to go about my business. That said, I am only about 5’9” so I have to rely on a bit of athleticism and reflexive reactions more than I’d like to when faced with second or third chances that end up moving to the extreme East or West on the ice. If anything I’d think in my wildest imaginations and most complimentary moment I hope to look like a Butterfly Richter out there.

I'm probably a hybrid B - between butterfly and flopper - but not by choice. I don't have a ton of patience - and would like to develop more. I'd like to be more of a centered butterfly goalie. Great video, glad I found it. I find myself playing a lot of pickup or drop in hockey with different defensive style and talent each night. I would say that I flip flop between hybrid A and hybrid B depending on the defense in front of me, but also the attacking offensive players. Even in league nights I may switch between the 2 throughout the game to force the offense to change strategy. I find this to be a high risk high reward style.

Hybrid B now but back in the day I was a flopper which was strange for a 2000s goalie. But I had No goalie coach growing up until pewee. Then I went to OnIce goaltending school and trained with Matt Clark. He said to me after one of our skates.”I’ve seen you flop around and roll on your back more times In this one practice than I’ve seen a goalie do over the course of an entire season” He said to me “you realize you’re working 10x harder to make a save than most guys, if we can teach you to play with structure and use all that energy efficiently you’ll be a really hard goalie to beat”. I don't really know where I'd be. I'm only 5 foot 8 so I'm really small for a goalie, especially considering I play at AA caliber hockey. Because I'm small I will sometimes stay up to make some high saves when they are above the circle. but I'm also extremely quick and flexible and will often make split saves. I basically play like Brodeur when the puck is far, and Jonathan Quick when the puck is in the house. Also, my stance resembles Quick's but I have my gloves more active to block more area.

Where would you put a prime Roberto luongo? I'd say he was the hybrid between flopper and patient butterfly but more toward patient butterfly. Depends which team he was playing for. When he was in Florida at the beginning of his career, he was forced to flop more due to the amount of shots he was facing every night playing on a really weak Florida team. When he was in Vancouver during their best years he was a pretty masterful butterfly goalie.

I would agree. I think the only technical issue with him from looking at my old prescouts I did with the Leafs would be his tendency to end up on all fours many times a game during scrambles

David Pierini yes. I played against him 3-4 times in the minors and saw his greatness up close. He never quit on pucks and although he seemed at times to be mindlessly flopping, he has a genius ability to use anticipation and structure that allowed him to keep the best shooters in the planet at bay for over a decade. He had a skill set that can’t be taught or understood. True great.

Tim Thomas probably slots into Hybrid B. I'm likely Hybrid B and I think that suits me best. I understand the theory that you could get more success out of being right in the middle, but I don't agree this is applicable 100%. I don't think Hasek or Brodeur would be better as middle butterfly goalies. I think that learning to be the patient butterfly type is the best method to hone your skills but as you become stronger you need to adapt your most useful unique abilities into your game.

Probably Hybrid B, but I've been told between A and patient butterfly is more accurate. I assume the average person is Hybrid B, trying to butterfly while also occasionally flailing. I always felt like I flopped a little bit, but from the outside perspective was told that I was more patient and would wait instead of showing my hand. It's all relative though, I guess. My preference was to play the Puck and recover, not lay down Not to say I didnt get a cool save with my toe on a flop at least once

Honestly I think I'm too early in the game to make an acurate assessment. Just because I'm still too inconsistent for that, but in a scramble I'm 100% a flopper. lol. Im definitely too reactionary, I need to be better in a blocking butterfly and learn too use it and when. I also struggle with being square to the puck but also staying square in relation to the net. And being a rookie I'm assuming my fundamentals are more then atrocious. Lol ..
