So, which Chopin piece do you think is the SADDEST - one of these two or a different one? By the way, I misspoke in the video and mislabeled the mazurka - it is Op.17, not 11. Oops! Another "by the way": don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to this channel and click the notification bell 🔔. Like, share, comment, enjoy!

definitely the first nocturne 20 you played, but that's mainly from the connection to the sad movie "The Pianist". My saddest Chopin: Mazurka 17/4 (Cries and Whispers), Prelude 28/4, Etude 25/7 Nocturnes 27/2 and 48/1, and Sonata op 35 Pt 3 of course. Anyway, well played by you. I've been struggling for 60 years to get Maz 17/4 "just right".

@@leongatha6 All good choices, and for good reasons. And thanks for the kind words. I know what you mean about the mazurka - I don't feel I'll ever get it "just right" but I felt like recording it anyway.

Thank you for the lovely rendition of both pieces. As a Pole I interpret those compositions not as sad at all but more reflective and sentimental and yes, joyful journey throughout the landscape of my Polish soul. Pure pleasure.

Thanks for your kind words. It's true that "sad" does not adequately describe these pieces - it is more of a convenient umbrella term for so many emotions that are expressed in the music. To me they are definitely sad but in a way that feels so deeply satisfying - both heartbreaking and deeply moving. Chopin was such an incredible composer. My grandparents were born in Poland and I would love to visit Poland.

Mazurca io 11 n. 4 is the saddest between the pieces you played in this video ... but the absolute saddest in my opinion is Prelude op 28 n. 4
@JonathanGeffnerPianist

Good choice. I was considering including that prelude in the choices. I decided to narrow it down to two pieces because I didn't want my video to be too long and lose viewers, but your choice is definitely a candidate for "Saddest Chopin Piece". By the way, I misspoke in the video - the Mazurka is Op. 17, not 11. Oops!

Yes, it often feels cathartic listening to - and playing - sad music, especially music composed by the ingenious Chopin.

Nocturne Op. 72 No. 1 E Minor. If you've ever wondered what it's like to listen to a piano weep in regret and remorse, that is definitely the piece.

I would say his Nocturne in e minor (Op 72 #1) . I also agree with your selected Nocturne in c# minor. Generally Chopin's Nocturnes are deep and do have a profound feeling of real life...

What could be sadder than the third movement of his piano sonata no. 2, the Funeral March?
@JonathanGeffnerPianist
@JonathanGeffnerPianist 2 ай бұрын
True, but since it's a movement from a piece I didn't consider it; I was only considering full pieces.
