Maaan.. about 947 previous KZbin videos have lost me to this subject before this one. They all expertly explain what picture profiles ARE and what they look like (which is.... I mean.. why? I can see what they look like.. thx tho..) but none of them bothered to explain the WHY and certainly not the REASONS to use them. Great video! Simple, but it explained more in a few mins, than the previous ones in hours and hours of digging. Subscribed. Thanks, Attila

I think color correction is always necessary. Color grading however is something you do exclusively for yourself and your tech-nerd friends. The client almost never appreciates the difference between standard or graded footage. So I have given up on grading and spend that time on script development instead.

I settled with HLG2 BT2020 gamma Details -7 and Stauration -7. Image does not need much of tweaking/grading at all. Saturation = 0 is also good. Camera A7C. If I need to do any color grading, I export result from Davinci Resolve in Main10 4:2:0 HVEC MP4 file and it looks great!

You are very sincere and i appreciate your honesty. I agree, sometimes we just don't have time on post to color grade and use no picture profile on a controlled ambient is the best shot. Thank you.

Here’s a better example, shooting in a picture profile is like taking a RAW photo. You get much more control when editing. If you don’t like editing, go ahead and just take JPEG photos. Don’t forget to turn on Auto too.

I've been shooting a bunch of corporate indoor shoots on a flat background in LOG just to practice color grading, and because I got the idea that shooting in the standard profile was just unacceptable for a professional to do, like shooting stills with the camera on Auto. But now that I understand the profiles and do know how to grade, I think I'm gonna stick with the standard profile most of the time. Great video, very informative. Thanks!

I am trying to figure out a way to "stretch" the colors as you say but I can't find how to do this in Lightroom. Would you be able to help point me in the right direction? A bunch of my photos are all gray and I can't properly fix them. Thank you in advance!
@dunnadidit Жыл бұрын
You got it! Take your curves, grab the very top point and drag it to the left across the top, then take the very bottom point and drag it right along the bottom. Then add a little s-curve between the two for contrast. Then crank up the saturation a bit and you should be at a decent starting place.

@dunnadidit4 жыл бұрын
SLOG2 is still useable for sure, I find you just have to really NAIL the exposure right on in camera. If you don’t get that, that’s when it starts to fall apart for me. The reason my standard profile looks nice on the shot with the plants is because there isn’t a lot of dynamic range in that shot. It’s not clipping the whites or the blacks. All the information in the scene fits inside the range that the picture allows.
@SidsDrakon4 жыл бұрын
This was awesome. Super helpful. I donhave a question. Do you use the profiles for both picture and video?
@dunnadidit4 жыл бұрын
I don’t use them for photos because I shoot raw. If you shoot a picture profile in raw, it will disappear when you import that raw file into your editor anyway. You might see it on the camera because it’s a jpg preview. But you don’t really need it because the raw file has so much more space to keep all that information anyway. If you’re shooting jpg, you could argue that picture profiles might be helpful in a similar way as they are for video.

@@dunnadidit I do shoot raw to... hmm i have to look into something then. Looked like even with raw it was giving me picture profiles. I MUST INVESTIGATE... 😅😅😅

Just a got a sony a6400 ya its confusing you have to go to page 11 under the first menu why its burried in menus and not on the function button with iso whitbalnce exposure and other things . Then pick from whats labeled pp1 through pp8 then go to a submenu from there and pick from settings that lead to another submenu. I definitely had to hunt for these options it really should of been on the front page of the first menu with the framrate options .
