As someone who already knows all this stuff... This is SO GOOD! Seems like so many people are explaining Log in a way that creates more confusion, then also telling them, "just add saturation and contrast." It's refreshing that you made such a clear and complete tutorial on Log!

You have just fixed for me a major issue I was having with SLOG3 color grading and exposure. After watching your Video, I purchased Cinematch .. and OMG .. it is PERFECT. I spent hours applying it over my previous conversion LUTs from Sony and other Companies, and this is SO good and much easier to get my footage looking the way I have always wanted. I can't thank you enough !!!

@@dunnadidit sorry one question on Cinematch. If you use an Atomos Ninja in your setup, what Gamma would I set as the output format inside Cinematch? I’ve got it working perfectly direct from camera but not sure what the Atomos settings would be, I’m assuming Prores HQ which is what I set on the Atomos for the Codec. No worries if you don’t have an Atomos and thanks again awesome video !! Changed everything for me honestly !!!
@dunnadidit2 жыл бұрын
Prores hq should work just fine and dandy. The atomos “shouldn’t” be adjusting the picture at all, just collecting the data that the camera gives it. So technically, the cinematch plug-in should still work just like it would if you were recording internally.

When you deliberately over expose and introduce clipping so that you can properly expose your subject (e.g. your face in front of the window), how did you determine the exposure level for your face? You mentioned that knowing all of the tools and when to use them would help you in this situation, but which tool did you use? ETTR wouldn't work, Zebras wouldn't work (not the ones configured to S-Log3 anyway) and the Gamma Assist would just be eyeballing it, right? How would you accurately expose your face in S-Log 3 in that scenario?
@dunnadidit10 ай бұрын
This is a friggin GREAT question. 2 ways... 1. You can use the gamma assist or LUT feature depending on which camera you're using and dial things in to taste. This is the less technical way, but it's quick and easy and gets the job done. 2. You actually can use zebras to get the skin tones. Sony Cine suggests skin tones between 48-52% exposure which should give you skin tones of between 55-65% after a rec709 conversion. So in this situation, you could set a zebra range and set it to 50+/_ 2 and then expose for the skin tones. (This is all for S-LOG 3 based on this article - sonycine.com/articles/how-correctly-expose-s-log3---a7s-iii---fx3---fx6---fx9/ ) Hope that helps!

Hands down the best video on S-Log. I’ve watched tons of videos and this simplifies it, but doesn’t lack detail. I started shooting video for clients a couple of years ago. I’ve been avoiding shooting S-Log because of the exposure and editing difficulties and for fear of messing up the shoot. I’ve tried several other profiles, but with real estate being my main subject, I need the best dynamic range, so I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and get on with it. This video has really given me the confidence to do it. Thanks!

My man, you just made all of this click for me. I’m a novice at filmmaking and I had bits and pieces of knowledge for shooting in s-log3 but I was never quite sure why, or what it meant to do so. You just made it all make sense and now I know what to do. I was shooting a frontier life festival this past weekend and it was my first time out with my new A7IV and my first time shooting in log. I shot it at 800 iso, 24p, 1/50 shutter speed, with a variable nd filter on my lens. My problem was that I didn’t know if I was exposing it correctly, so I just guessed based on if I thought it looked okay or not. The sun wasn’t helping me see my lcd screen either. But now I know if I use zebras and the histogram, I could probably get pretty good results as long as I can see those items while shooting. So, seriously, THANK YOU! You just changed the way I will do things from here on.

Thanks Dunna, I'm an experienced photographer used to shooting in raw but a video newbie. Your vid gives me a good basic overview to start shooting in S-Log, without confusing the concept with lots of tech info. I had a basic grasp of why I should use log, but thus far had never ventured beyond using S-Cinetone. I just never quite got around to understanding the specific settings to use in practice, so this helps demystify things and gives me a base to start growing my practical and theoretical understanding. Things differ slightly from model to model. Picture 'profile 8' isn't shown in the menu on my FX3, but this looks to be set via the 1st menu, 1st sub item (Image Quality/Rec) then 4th lower menu (Log Shooting Settings). I see I can switch off or select between 3 options (Flexible ISO / Cine EI Quick / Cine EI). I know Cine EI just gives ISO options of 800 and 12800 only. This may be a good choice when I better understand it, but I'm going to start experimenting with 'Flexible ISO' and look at grading within DaVinci (something else I need to spend time learning how to use). One general 'thing' I find confusing with Sony menus is a tendency to 'grey options out' and declare something like "This operation or setting not available as follows" then reference one of the earlier settings, already selected, without much (well any) real explanation of the what and why. But I'm slowly getting there.
