How to calculate the total no of Ragams in Carnatic music? No of Melakarta Ragams in total (Parent scales )-72 No of Janya Ragams (derived scale ) in total from each Melakarta -483 Total no of Ragams = No of Janya Ragams in each Melakarta * No of melakarta ragams =483*72 = 34,776 Thus there are total 34,776 ragams all together in Carnatic music, -By Amithesh (Carnatic flute player ) Disciple of Natyacharya Dr.Balachandra Raju Guruji ,Natyacharya Sushruthi Raju and Bhooma Parthasarathi 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

One thing is, many janya ragas overlap with different janaka ragas...

@@ashrithharith3474 Here's the math, For each of the 72 possible melakarta set of notes, we have: 1 arohanam with all 7 notes (sampurna) = 1 6 arohanams with 6 out of 7 notes (shadava) = 6 (6 choose 2) or 15 arohanams with 5 of the 7 notes (audava) = 15 Therefore, we have 1 + 6 + 15 = 22 possible arohanams from 1 set of melakarta notes Repeat the same for avarohanams, you get 1 + 6 + 15 = 22 possible avarohanams per melakarta Total number of possible combinations of aroh and avarohs = 22 * 22 = 484 Subtract 1 because we're double counting the melakarta with 7 notes in aro and 7 in avaroh = 483 However, as Chaitanya pointed out, many janyas will be double counted. The actual number is ~26000 not 34776.

Hello!! In Shankarabharam, the notes are : S R2 G3 M1 P D2 N3 S S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S In Mayamalavagowla, the notes are : S R1 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S S N3 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S If u see the notes, the notes are changed in R and D.. so R2 is a white note in piano,R1 is a black note...D2 is a white note,D1 is a black note in piano... And also if u see the video carefully, u will see the R and r... Hope u understand!! 😊 -Tejasi 8 B
