Regarding your "things to sort out", I am a PC Gamer first but I have lived with desk top monitors for 25 years since i build my first PC Rig. My Man Cave is 15 x 25 which really should not make a difference but you see I spend many hours by the day and week working on my other Hobby building and racing Model Racing Yachts. When in this mode I want some music to fill the room for me and any of my guest builders. Your point of view seems to make good sense but many of us have an expanded requirement for our audio purchasing. Thanks for this video its well done.

Hi Edward, thank you for your great videos. Could I ask for your opinion, my room is a standard rectangular 12ft x 9ft (carpeted room) would you personally use HS7 or HS8’s? Logic would point towards the HS7’s, however my concern is simply that the HS7’s won’t have enough bass response and I will have to later invest in a subwoofer. For reference, I am looking to produce a wide range of music genres i.e. dance, pop, light classic. Could the HS8’s possibly be tuned down for my room size so the bass isn’t overpowering? Many thanks 👍

Question / Hello, I play the acoustic guitar as an amateur, I sing and I sometimes also use a drum machine and this exclusively at home in my office (13FT X 9FT). Today I sound all this with my Marshall AS50D amp. It sounds good but I'm afraid of damaging my amp. This is why after several opinions and after watching your video, I plan to equip myself with two Yamaha HS5 monitoring speakers and a Yamaha MG06X table. I have focal alpha 50s for about 1 month and I’m very pleased with the results! I compared them in a music store with the hs 5s and they were a lot more balanced. I think that the Yamahas have very little bass and the focals are great in that category. The mids are very clear on both and the top end are a little harsh on the Yamahas. So I personally prefer the focals for my type of music. The yamahas are great too! (Here where I live they are the same price)

I've had the Alpha 50s for over 3 years and I love them! I was debating between the Yamaha HS5s as well but I went for the Focals. I recently added the Yamaha HS8S subwoofer paired with them and it's an unreal experience. Focal is a great speaker company, high priced, but so worth it. If I had more money I would've went with the Focal sub, but it's still a great combination. Either way, I'm happy to see you're enjoying these monitors as well!

If you already like the Yamaha HS home studio series, check out the flagship of the company - the professional Yamaha MSP series. These babies have an even greater audio resolution, a more accurate frequency response, front bass ports, a really stylish 100% black design and a heavy, kinda rock-solid building quality. The only studio monitors with a similar high audio resolution (never really heard such a well defined, sharp 'n' tight bass) have been the pretty expensive Neumann studio monitors (and I still think that the Yamaha MSP series contain the more accurate studio monitors) - definitely some of the best on the market because they'll show you every little mixing mistakes straight in your face. But if you get it to make your tracks sound only fairly good on these monitors, they'll blow you away on every sound system you listen to your soundtracks after mixing.

The problem with using HS5s in a small room is that you can't place them near a wall because of the rear port and this is probably something you'll want to do if your room is small. Front ported speakers like KRK Rokit 5's would probably be better in this instance.

Thanks for this video! So I think im going to go with the HS-5 pair and im wondering if it is essential to get the subwoofer with it or if they are good on their own? I am a bedroom music producer for context.
@slangdoll2 жыл бұрын
I am wondering the same thing and have recently decided NOT to get the sub. In the end I figured the sub would add more problems than solve… I don’t have ideal placement and it’s another thing to worry about with acoustic treatments and also, the extra money for one just didn’t seem worth it for the issues I might experience even though I really want to hear the lower end. I’m going HS5 without the sub and looking forward to the classic trials in the car and with home stereo equipment to check my masters.

I have the predecessors, the HS50M's and the Yamaha 8" sub. The thing you have to be careful of is how loud you turn up the sub. At its detent 12 o'clock position, the sub greatly overpowers the same setting on the HS50M's. So I keep the sub at roughly 9 o'clock, and that seems to fill out the low end nicely without overpowering the satellites. And the eq settings on both the sub and the satellites is critical. I have yet to figure out a good setting (the sub has 2 eq switches, and the satellites have 4. I believe the HS-5 has 2 eq switches. I really like this system, especially because I got them in mint condition used at a good price. I'm a living room music producer.

Hi Ed, I want to get a fuller sound out of my digtital piano. Should I use Monitors to do that? I have a Yamaha P515, which is a great keyboard but I would like to emulate the acoustic sound better. Are monitors the best way to do that?
@ajnazatahm2 жыл бұрын
Monitors are focused on accurate representation with the goal of mixing music in mind. If all you need is a better sound than the speakers built into your piano, any quality speak of appropriate size for the room you’re trying to fill should do. A good speaker doesn’t need to be a monitor as you don’t need to monitor specific frequency responses :)

just a quick FYI, you can get any studio monitors you just need to adapt your mixing techniques to the speakers
@JTguitarlessons2 жыл бұрын
That's partially true. Mix translation from monitors to other systems is a pretty big deal, though. The more accurate the representation at the first source, the less you'll be questioning your own technique because your monitors are giving you the truest representation of what you're doing. Lower end studio monitors will not always translate well to all systems. Yamaha's have been an industry standard for a reason. There's also a reason that you don't do this professionally.

Always curious about this: studio monitors are used to mix the music but not to listen to music. So no one hears the song the way it was intended?
@EdwardSmithMusic2 жыл бұрын
When you mix a song, you are analyzing it. You will never listen to your own music or songs you work on the way you listen to other people’s song.
@kyleolin35662 жыл бұрын
The song is intended to translate well to all systems. A coloured system may hide blemishes in the sound that is devastating on another system. You want a flat and detailed response on monitors. Then the mix should be tested on other systems, after it is mixed.
@armanrozika2 жыл бұрын
@@EdwardSmithMusic so studio monitors is perfect for listening music, because that's what a mix engineer want it to sound, right? confusing indeed

yeah it's so confusing what these people said that studio monitor is for mixing and not listening to music. LIke whaaaat? isn't it the perfect choice to listen to music with monitors? because that's what the engineers want it to sound
@kyleolin35662 жыл бұрын
I believe studio monitors give the most natural representation of sound. Most casual listeners like different variations of augmented bass, mids, or treble, so most speaker setups are not designed for a flat range, rather an augmented range. Herein lies the crux. If you make a well balanced mix on flat monitors, it should adapt well to differing augmentations in sound. Feel free to correct me if I am incorrect on my hypothesis.
