I just started Kendo, as part of Kempo training, last year. With my dojo on lockdown my sensei advised us to keep practicing, read books and watch videos. I shared some of yours with him and he recommended to keep watching because your style of quality over quantity is the same as his. Thank you for all your work in our sport and art!

Just three small points. You can put more than 1 Suburiko on a Shinai to increase the weight, and the closer to the Kensen or tip (the far end from your hands as you hold the Shinai) then the more you will need to concentrate and use your abdominal muscles and not just your arms to control your swing. You can also place one Suburiko between your hands on the tsuka (handle or grip) to also change the weight and feel of the Shinai in a different way again. Having one at the tip and one on the grip can help balance the weight distribution so it is not too top or bottom heavy. I have at home a 3kg solid wood Bokken that I got from another website. Having a training tool that is 6 times heavier than your average Shinai really forces you to control all of the muscles you have to make sure your swing is smooth. It's not easy, but you sure will find a normal Shinai light in comparison after you have a few swings with that. Perhaps Kendostar could look at getting ultra-heavy Shinai in as well? Lastly, don't forget to train with a standard Shinai. It's what you use all the time in standard practice. If you use ultra-light or ultra-heavy training tools exclusively, then you will find your normal Kendo work to go rubbish as you will have to adjust back to what has become an unfamiliar weight. You can't use Bokken or Suburiko for any form of striking practice, it's just too dangerous. :-\

After watching this I've literally just seconds ago ordered the Furisen and Suburi Bokken from KendoStar.com. Website looks very organised, and professional. Thus far, a very smooth process. A solid thumbs up for the Video and the recommendations.

Most people might think that practicing with a light bokuto doesn't make any sense, but actually, mastering a light weapon is a real challenge. It is a challenge because we tend to rely heavily on brute force or "muscle arm strength" only. The true mastery of the art of the sword ( from my point of view regarding fencing) lies in proper breathing and body position/displacement. Keep in mind that, although you practice with a shinai or a bokuto, you should always assume that it is a live blade and as such, you have to think about cutting with it, and not just about hitting, as if it were a baseball bat. Keep in mind that a live blade does not require much force to be able to cut deep, and what really guarantees the cut is the position and angle of the blade. A light bokuto teaches that aspect very well.

Thank you, Ferguson Sensei! I just made Ikkyu but my Senseis have been criticizing my asynchronous movement between my fumikomi and my suburi strikes. I hope this will help remedy this.
