Since January 2020, Singaporeans have consumed over 40 tonnes of sugar substitutes. These sweeteners promise to leave a sweet taste without contributing our calorie intake. But some are concerned about the potential side effects of artificial sweeteners. How safe and healthy are sugar substitutes? And with so many varieties, which one should you choose? I am Diabetic. I don't take sugar period. I drink my coffee without sugar or milk. Tea with orange or lime slices. Wheat I stick to 3 thin slices of multi grain bread. I do eat fruit in small amounts. Pine apple about 2 or 3 one inch cubes same for papaya, and that's daily. Other fruit mostly tropical in small amounts when in season. I have been doing fine without sweeteners. I don't drink fruit juices either. Now when I was a child and a young person I was addicted to sweets and all things sweet especially cakes. But somehow I have lost the taste for such things. I'm 90 .

Many of the studies conducted on artificial sweeteners were conducted by sugar corporations. Also, as the reporter stated, results have been inconclusive. Lastly, reducing sugar intake period is better for your health, artificial or natural.

Do understand that their empirical methodology is flawed. CNA has real questionable journalistic practices, this is one of them. Case in point, around the 13 min mark, wrong application of aspartame & sucralose. Only an uneducated person dissolves artificial sweeteners that way, to be undrinkably sweet

Correct, many studies that resulted in negative results have been backend by the sugar industry. For aspartame as an example, it was found correct that it causes cancer in rats ... at a quantity that would equal 2 kg human intake every single day. In real daily life, we are talking about a need for a few grams per day, since aspartame is so much sweeter.

Aspartame is a known carcinogen, neuro- toxin in humans so i would not be using aspartame it's not good for you it causes a range of issues. You should be worried less about calories than putting chemicals in your body that we were never meant to consume. If you're worried about diabetes and sugar spikes stop eating sugar and only eat a whole food plant based diet. Type II Diabetes is a lifestyle disease, stay out of the middle isles of the grocery store and stop drinking diet sodas. Stop eating processed foods that contain MSG, high fructose and sucrose laden foods. If it has additives that you can't pronounce then don't eat it, if it didn't grow out of the ground DO NOT EAT IT!!!!

Stevia is not an artificial sweetener. I have been using stevia for about 20 years. I use to plant my own stevia, but it has become so difficult to find the plant that I give up. 2 days ago I was able to find 2 stevia plant but guess what. I don't know what happened but this plants are not as sweet is more bitter, been very disappointed on finding the good stevia plants I used to get, know I get liquid stevia, but if if I wan to drink coffee I use stevia with eritritol. Thanks for this report, very informative ⭐⭐🙏🙏⭐

I bought 5 stevia plants. Every morning I pick one or two leaves and put in my tea or coffee. Its not quite the same as sugar but its sweet enough. It has the same kind of aftertaste as Diet Pepsi and so forth. Now apparently I can increase sweetness and reduce bitterness depending on the type of soil, use of compost, temperature I keep my plants, only plucking mature leaves and drying them to concentrate the sweetness. But all of that is way too much work!

@3:47min , agave or fructose still considered to be caloric sweetner, no much diff compared to sugar except slight lower GI response and slight sweetness perception. still contribute 4kcal/g of them. typical lies of saying 0 sugar used, but in the end use fructose. such a misleading claim...just like the genki forest milk tea... 0 g cane sugar but still use caloric sweetner...bloody lame

Of course, the aspartame and the sucralose should have been dosed lower. Then they do not hammer down the tea notes, and give subtle sweetness without much aftertaste. Sugar actually gives syrupy, full bodies mouthfeel. Many do miss this mouthfeel with the other sweeteners. However, after a while consuming only sugar-free alternatives, most people do react negative to that syrup-mouthfeel. Xylitol as mentioned is from a taste point of view the best replacement for sugar. It has a full, sweet body. Unfortunately, it has a slight cooling note that does not go well in all foods, but for some others will be a perfect complement. The other two sugar-alcohols mentioned are also good, just depends on the food they are used for. Sugar alcohols cause a mild laxative effect. (I am developer for sweet goods by the way)
@krollpeter
@krollpeter Жыл бұрын
One that is not included here is Isomalt. It is a sugar-alcohol that has a similar sweetness profile as sugar. It has only 60 % of the sweetness, but for a number of applications that is even good, because the general trend is going to lesser sweet. It also makes wonderful hard boiled candies that have half the calories of usual candies and no ill effect on teeth. It is not common to use in Asia, but it's good.

For those wanting to lose weight and considering artificial sweeteners, sweeteners can still cause an effect known as "cephalic phase insulin release" which is your response to perception of sweetness when you taste it, and production of insulin as a response. Too much insulin and you won't lose weight regardless of number of calories. Xylitol can have an effect on gut bacteria and digestion... some people more than others.

At the end of the video, she sweetens her tea with a combination of two natural sweeteners. I found this interesting because as a type 2 diabetic, I too experimented with many sugar substitutes. I came up with my own combination that is probably not as healthy as the one she uses. I've used pure Stevia powder (300:1) with a light touch of Splenda (Sucrolose) to ward off the slight Stevia aftertaste. It has worked well for taste for me. But given Sucrolose is artificial, I will experiment with the same combo she used; Stevia and a sugar alcohol. I also understand from reading around on the web that the body's taste buds can be reset. It takes about two to three weeks for it to happens. But from my understanding, the amount of sweetness needed to satisfy taste buds can be lowered by abstaining or reducing the amount of sweetness and allowing the taste buds retrain themselves to adjust to the new lower level. Much like the opposite way when its hard to become satisfied with a sugary treat when you had something even sweeter minutes before. It maybe plausible that the brain's threshold for sweetness can be adjusted to crave less sweetness with a self induced psychology.

Agave has high GI according to Eric Berg DC. So who’s saying the truth? 😓 I use erythritol & coconut sugar (low GI) aside from monk fruit & stevia. Coconut sugar is waaay better tasting than stevia on my coffee. They are equally healthy & coco sugar is low in calories so no guilt in using it at all for my lifetime diet.

For the baking part using agave syrup, isn’t fructose considered as sugar too? It is true fructose has low GI and induce low insulin response. But it may lead to fatty liver. Price-wise maybe 90x than table sugar but they hv up to hundreds times more sweetness. Main drawback is taste will never replicate table sugar

I found this article quite polarized... The reporter on the first half, was touching several subjects in good areas, but later she became much more (almost entirely) directed only to taste and calories... forgetting completely of the effects of these substances in the system, especially over the long run. And by the way, counting calories has been proven a quite bad way to reduce or maintain the waist line over the long run (even more if you consider health in the equation)!

Hate how the food industry claim sugar free chocolate while using Maltitol. Maltitol is only a tiny bit lower on the GI than table sugar. It makes no significance if a diabetic is trying to avoid spiking their blood sugar! The industry leaders should also play a part in educating and not wait for market demand. There is demand, but all goes online to import. Erythritol is such a common ingredient in the keto market yet it's non-existent I. The local retail market. We've to go iherb, online platforms.
