*Updates:* (8/20/22): I realize it might be useful to know EXACTLY what functions are present on which calculator. Thankfully they're all listed on TIBasicDev! Here's the list for the black and white calculators: tibasicdev.wikidot.com/command-index-bw and here's the list for color calculators: tibasicdev.wikidot.com/command-index The lists are nearly identical, but the color calculators have a few new functions such as Piecewise, ToString, and Wait. (11/30/21): Annoyingly, KZbin has removed the public dislike count. If you'd like to see the dislike count on this video, I suggest installing the 'Return KZbin Dislike' extension (Firefox, Chrome, Edge).

@TheLastMillennial

I don't have nearly as much experience with scientific calculators as I do graphing calculators. If you want a calculator with all the features possible, the TI-36x pro or TI-30x Pro Mathprint are probably your best bet. If your teacher doesn't want your calculator to have certain functions like integration, the TI-30x IIS or TI-30x Plus Mathprint (I chose this for my statistics class) are probably the way to go. Honestly it'd be really nice if you could just use a graphing calculator for everything. I'm going to be talking with the developers of the HP Prime and hopefully I can convince them to create a 'Scientific calculator' mode which will essentially turn off all the Prime's features that a regular scientific calculator wouldn't already have. That way you could have one calculator for all your math and science courses.

The TI-82 line is crazy in that it still lives on to this day in the TI-84 variants out there. When it was new it was never the most capable calc and despite the subsequent improvements it always felt like it was a step behing the ti-85 although it ultimately won as that stopped after only the ti-86, whats more impressive in its longevity is it managed to out live the ti-92 line with it being around after the ti 89 titanium and ti voyager 200 (seriously ti why the voyager rename for a sleeker ti-92+ update?)

First off, you vids are awesome. Thank you for the content! I’m an adult returning to college and I plan on studying MIS which is pretty math heavy, but I have no experience in college math and I’ve never even used a graphing calculator. My question is, since every calculator is going to have a learning curve for me, do you think I should go for the ti-84 plus ce, or opt for the more feature rich nspire cx ii cas? Bonus points if you can tell me if the cas is worth it for a newbie in the college world. And a big thanks if you can take the time to answer this!
@TheLastMillennial
@TheLastMillennial 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with the specific courses required for MIS but I can give you some general info The TI-84 Plus CE is definitely going to be less of a learning curve, but the Nspire or HP Prime are much better values since they have significantly more features and performance for a similar price. I would not really recommend a TI-84 Plus CE for college because its feature set is designed for high school courses and it's just incredibly slow for doing anything remotely intensive (even graphing is painfully slow compared to the Nspire or HP Prime). CAS is extremely useful if you're taking classes like Calculus or if you need to manipulate equations in general. I would highly recommend it if your professor allows it. If CAS is allowed by your professor, I would definitely go for an Nspire CX II -T CAS or an HP Prime G2. I believe only Nspire models with -T in the name allows you to display answers in radical and other forms (EDIT: This is not completely true. Any Nspire that has CAS can also display answers in radical & other forms. For non-CAS Nspires, only ones with -T can still display answers in radical & other forms). However, the HP Prime has that built in even if you get the older G1 model. Personally I found the HP Prime to have less of a learning curve than the Nspire, but if you just spend an hour with either calculator you'll get the basics down pretty quick. If your professor does NOT allow CAS then the Nspire CX II -T would be my next recommendation. All HP Prime models have CAS built in so that they would not be allowed. Hopefully that helps you out. Let me know if you have any questions!

Usb C is slightly more expensive than micro or mini USB. Calculators are all about maximizing profit margins so why bother implementing a superior connector if it means more work for the manufacturer? I've only seen one usb C mod for the TI-84 Plus CE. However, I believe it broke data communication with the way it was hooked up. If you want a modern way of charging, I'd suggest adding wireless charging to the calculator. It won't affect data transfer and I even made a tutorial on it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5ube31-l5ainsU

I don't believe PineappleCAS can solve indefinite integrals. While it's otherwise very useful for those who have never had access to CAS before, it's nowhere near as feature rich as an Nspire. I honestly love the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition. It’s underpowered I know but all I need is to graph and do equations. I also prefer the design over the TI-84 CE. Although not being as sleek or slim as the TI-84 CE, it still has the outdated or as would like to say nostalgic design as the TI-84. It even has an I/o or as some would say a headphone jack! I’m not saying the CE is a bad calculator, the CE is actually a pretty good calculator. If I were to play games then yeah a TI-84 CE would be a good calculator. I guess the only con I have for the TI-84 C Silver for a new one, it does cost as much as a TI-Nspire CX II CAS when you could get the CE new for 20 or 30 dollars cheaper.

I have to buy a ti 84 for my son for algebra. I was reading the ti 84 plus ce is non cas, which doesn't do algebra and the ti 84 plus is cas and can do algebra. It's this correct? @TheLastMillennial
@TheLastMillennial Жыл бұрын
None of the calculators in the TI-84 family have a Computer Algebra System (CAS). This means they cannot provide answers in terms of letters. For example if you gave the TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus CE the equation: (2*x)/x it could not simplify that to just x. However, this does not mean the TI-84 family cannot be used in Algebra class. The functions your kids will be using in Algebra will not require CAS. In fact, most teachers do not allow calculators with CAS in the classroom, and CAS is often disallowed on standardized tests. CAS is typically used in more advanced math classes like Calculus. You are correct, the TI-84 Plus CE does have the option to install PineappleCAS from a computer which would give it basic CAS capabilities. I want to stress that PineappleCAS is *not* pre-installed on the calculator and you must intentionally send PineappleCAS from a computer to get it on the calculator. In short, none of the TI-84 calculators have CAS pre-installed and you do *not* need calculator with CAS for Algebra class. Since you care about longevity, I would recommend getting a TI-84 Plus CE since the screen is significantly more robust, and TI is actively supporting it with software updates.

It's not any easier to cheat on the Python edition calculators than it is on the non-Python editions. Your school will allow it unless they specifically requested a -T model. The -T model has an extra testing LED at the top of the calculator that is required for some Exams. If you are getting a TI-84 Plus CE -T Python Edition you're already good to go no matter what country you live in. However, if you're not in the USA and you're getting the regular TI-84 Plus CE Python then check with your school to verify it will be allowed.

Is it true that there is a difference between TI Plus CE models produced after May 2019 and before May 2019? I couldn’t find detailed information even after searching the internet. Or has the performance been improved by software upgrades since May 2019? I’m curious.. Furthermore, while the TI-84 Plus model gives an error when using archived programs, the TI-84 Plus CE reportedly allows for archived programs to be used without issue. Is it true that, unlike the TI-84 Plus model, the TI-84 Plus CE model can still use archived programs? And does this apply universally regardless of the manufacturing date? Thank you in advance for your response.
@TheLastMillennial
@TheLastMillennial Жыл бұрын
Yes, there's a major difference. Ones made after May 2019 can be up to 3x faster. This article is in French but you can google translate it and read more about it: tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=243780#p243780 Yes, on the TI-84 Plus you have to move programs into the RAM before you can run them (Or you can install a shell like Doors CS 7 which will let you run archived programs). If your TI-84 Plus CE has OS 5.3.0 or newer, then you'll be able to run programs from the Archive (no matter the hardware).

@@TheLastMillennial Thank you. It seems that for the CE model, if only the OS is upgraded, programs can be used from the archive. However, the link you provided seems to show that the Python edition model of the TI 83 has improved performance compared to before (I'm not entirely sure about my interpretation of the link you sent). Is this also applicable to the TI 84 CE model? Unlike the TI 83, even if it doesn't say "edition Python" on the calculator, does the performance change depending on the production date regardless of the manufacturing country? My English skills may not be great, so my post may seem awkward. Nonetheless, thanks to you, I was able to get some information. Oh, one more thing I'm curious about. Does the model with a picture next to the link button that can display fractions vary depending on the production date? Also, if the model was produced after May 2019 but doesn't have the fraction picture, does it have the same performance as the ones with the picture? Sorry for asking so many questions. Thank you in advance for your response.
@TheLastMillennial

That is correct, you just need to update the OS to run programs from the Archive. Regardless of manufacturing country, Python and non-Python calculators are the same speed as long as they are made after May 2019. Only the TI-83 Premium CE can display fractions and square roots. The TI-84 Plus CE cannot, unfortunately.
